Why don't I want to watch the tv/book adaptions? So many questions...

I'm a Pratchett fan, and judging from all the usernames I've seen there are many more about! I'm looking forward to raising steam; I don't know what DH will do once TP has sadly departed as he always releases a book in time for my birthday, bless him.

I've been reading them for the past 15 years and they have definitely shaped my personality, for good or ill.

I don't like the adaptations at all. David Jason as anyone other than Sergeant Colon is WRONG.

I've read TP from the beginning - it must be 27 or 28 years of reading him for me, and I go through phases of different books being my favourite. But the witches are my favourite characters, and I aspire to be Esme.

I think Vimes or Vetinari are THE characters for me. But then I do love Sybil too.

Yes, I think they can never get it right with the actors for the adaptions, I have such a definite picture in my head and I don't want it messed about with.

I haven't read nation as a lifelong fan and friend of mine didn't rate it at all. I have a copy of reaper man signed by TP. One of my treasured possessions We have two copies of most of the early books as when dh and I moved in together we both had them. I knew I'd picked the right man then

Nation is alright but it isn't typical tp. I love that most of the strong female characters have red hair, I think he must have a bit of a thing for us!

I agree Nation is non typical, but I really like it. I've enjoyed the Long Earth/Long War books too

Long earth/long war? I think I am slacking a bit on the Pratchett front. I have read all the discworld/Lancre ones. I've read truckers and the first Tiffany one. Haven't read those ones, think I am a bit scared I won't love them

I do like the witches - especially Nanny Ogg (though I would HATE to be one of her DILs - I bet they are all on here, complaining about their toxic MIL), but it is the city Guard who are my favourites. I love Carrot - he is so good - and it is utterly genuine. When he quells a mob of dwarves and trolls who are ready to beat seven shades of shit out of eachother, and gets them muttering 'Yes Captain Carrot' in a shamefaced way!! And Nobby - who has to carry paperwork to prove he is human. And Cherry Longbottom, Discworld CSI!!

I am very fond of the wizards too - especially Archchancellor Ridcully, the poor Bursar, and Hex (not technically a wizard, I know).

The only TP character I cannot get on with, is Rincewind. I want to slap him very hard with a spade. I happily re-read all the other books, but never the ones with him in.

The Long Earth is a collaboration with Stephen Baxter. If you like more sci fi type things, they are great, but def not Discworld. You should read the Tiffany ones as they are excellent

The Tiffany Aching books are my favorites! Although I will always have a soft spot for Vimes.

The Feegles are brilliant. And Tiffany is a wonderful, strong female character. What I like about The discworld is that on the whole, the female characters are well rounded, and not just props for the male characters. And Tiffany is one of the best examples of that. Love her!

YY to the feegles - I love them to bits, though I am not sure I'd want them to visit....

The new discworld one will be on my Christmas list (dh and I have to have the discussion about who is buying it for who so we don't end up with two copies - we both have kindles but it is unthinkable that we wouldn't actually own the book!)

YY rincewind isn't one of my favourites either. I do love DEATH and Death of Rats.

I love TP. I discovered him when I was 19 and am now 45 so a longer relationship than with my DH! (Who loves him too). It is a measure of my love for DH that I will let him read Raising Steam first.

I'm reading them to my DDs (10 and 12) now - have done the Witches series, the two Death books and am doing the Watch series now, just about to finish Thud. We'll take a break to do Hogfather over Christmas and then I'll decide whether or not to do Snuff - at the moment my gut says not, though we have done I Shall Wear Midnight and they handled it.

Vimes is my absolute favourite character. No-one comes even close, no-one ever will.

OP, you MUST read all the Tiffany Aching ones. They are wonderful.

It was a stranger moment for me when my DP asked where I wanted to go on holiday and the only place I really fancied visiting was Ankh-Morpork.

I love TP, found him when I was around 14.
Love Vimes, Cohen, Death, Susan, Albert, Lady Sybil is fab. Oh and Cpt Carrot, oh and Nobby, and Detritus, rincewind, twoflower was pretty funny too.

I am absolutely devastated that TP is so ill, I know he will die with so many books still left in him. He is a wonderful man and his interviews are fab

Hello all! TP fan here too (whoever would have guessed?). I have to say though, despite the username my fave character is Death, closely followed by Susan. Favourite book has to be Mort or Soul Music.

Discovered TP when I was at university over 20 years ago. A boyfriend gave me The Color of Magic, saying, "this is right up your street". I looked at him and thought you don't know me well if you think I read fantasy books.

He was right, the books were right up my street (and I married said boyfriend).

Witches Abroad is my favourite, I love the witches. I also like Wyrd Sisters, Reaper Man, The Last Continent, The Fifth Elephant, Going Postal and Unseen Academicals. Some of them I don't care for too much, especially some of the recent ones which have bern very short on laughs, like Snuff for instance.I didn't care for any of the TV adaptations, David Jason not at all suitable to play Rincewind, who is meant to be a young wizard, and Going Postal was lame.

Is it wrong to be already looking forward to going to bed tonight to read my book? I'm nearly finished and don't want to hurry that up too much because I'll have PPD (Post Pratchett Depression). Well until I start the next one. Might have to fish out the Witches trilogy

I'm just waiting for my copy of Raising Steam to arrive so that I can nag DH into getting on with reading it, so that I can take it to Holland with me next week.

I'm debating a celebratory name change...
