muffinmum · 08/07/2006 22:41

i remember LOVING roald dahls revolting rhymes

Lmccrean · 09/07/2006 12:11

I loved stuff by Dahl, and dd is a little young for those yet, but likes short poems. Her favourite is Commotion in the Ocean and then Twinkle Twinkle Chocolate bar. Must admit I like them too

FrannyandZooey · 09/07/2006 14:28

I can't cut it down to one, but my top 3 are probably

White Boots by Noel Streatfeild
The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit
and the whole of the Marlow series by Antonia Forest, I can't pick one favourite, or even two

Kaz33 · 09/07/2006 15:23

Oh yes I remember jill and her ponies - had them all and used to practice being a horse in the back garden

nikkie · 09/07/2006 15:30

Chalet school in exile (in fact most of the series)
Narnia
Roald Dahl

Rhubarb · 09/07/2006 15:32

Roald Dahl - dd loves him! Her face when I read them to her is fantastic! I had to read about 5 chapters of the BFG though or she'd never have slept if she hadn't known he was a friendly giant!

Kaz33 · 09/07/2006 16:10

Oh all inspired - just been on amazon and bought

land of green ginger
amazon adventure - willard price

to read to DS1, maybe I can help inspire him to read more.

muminamini · 09/07/2006 20:11

My 2 year old sone loves The Tiger Who Came To Tea. It must be a strong favourite to win for small kids - we have 3 copies as I, my MOL and Dad all bought it remembering it from years gone by!

He also loves
Peepo (when he was very young he loved the rhyme and one of his first words was saying "Peepo" at the end of the rhyme and clapping excitedly'

I love The Hungry Caterpillar but he's not bothered.

His current favourite is "The Cat who lost his purr"

From my childhood I loved The Faraway Tree stories, The Owl who was afraid of the dark, Narnia (all time favourites), Enid Blyton - especially Brer Rabbit.

Matonic · 10/07/2006 21:54

FandZ, I love Antonia Forest too, but I do wonder if my carefully hoarded collection will be wasted on ds ... too girly, do you think? I could start him on the historicals and the holiday books. (Mind you, he's only 4, so it's all a long way off.)

I'll also put a vote in for Land Of Green Ginger. Can't wait until ds discovers that, it's waiting for him in his bookcase.

doobydoo · 10/07/2006 22:04

Yeay to The Land of Green Ginger.Also...The Ogre Downstairs,

Arabica · 10/07/2006 22:19

The Swish of the Curtain. It's about a group of kids who squat a theatre and put on shows. I was very influenced by this and when I was 25 or so I squatted an old office building with a bunch of friends, and put on shows!

jenkel · 10/07/2006 22:48

When I was a child, The magic Faraway Tree, in fact anything by Enid Blyton and I had a lovely Heidi book with lovely pictures and The Water Babies. Also loved Princess and the Pea.

My DD's love Each Peach Pear Plum, soembody else mentioned The Snail and the Whale which they also like, also have a book called Pollys Picnic, and they like the ladybird classic tales - Cinderella, Princess and the Pea etc

Hi I'm new (but been lurking for a bit)
Love this thread - lots of happy memories.

DD (3 1/2) and we have just had a holiday with repeated readings of Billy's Bucket. Marvellous.

FrannyandZooey · 11/07/2006 10:40

My god Matonic I am that you have the historical Forests, and from the sounds of it, the originals of the holiday ones.

Yes I think a boy would very much enjoy those ones, and (hopefully be so hooked he would read all the term time ones as well )

MissChief · 11/07/2006 10:41

oh yes, Charlotte's Web - wonderful
Albert Herbery Hawkins - the naughtiest boy in the world!
Flat Stanley (no idea why, having looked at it again with ds but strangely appealed to my youunger self)
whne hitler stole pink rabbit
carbonel & calidor
narnia
pippi longstocking

Gem13 · 11/07/2006 11:12

eidsvold - Trixie Belden!!!! I bought them on holiday in the US when I was 9 and thought they were brilliant. I thought it was one of those books only I had read.

My favourite of all time is The Painted Garden - Noel Streatfield. Father runs someone over so the whole family decamp to the States for him to recover, children get discovered for their various talents...

For young children, I think Kipper is pretty fab. 'Kipper was very positive about snow'. Brilliant line.

fennel · 11/07/2006 14:54

Ds are Room on the Broom, Snail and the Whale, Gruffalo etc. for reading aloud. He also has The Empty Suit of Armour which he absolutely loved to read with his Dad and knew all of the words in no time.
