DDG - love them too. In fact, I bought a set when I was pregnant with DS1 so that I culd read them to him!!!

saadia · 07/07/2006 15:16

The Snail and the Whale - beautifully written and illustrated with a heartwarming message.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/07/2006 15:38

Tommy

At what age are you going to do that then?

Tommy · 07/07/2006 15:50

dunno DDG - DS1 still only 4. The only one I could think that he might like is the first one but I keep remembering the pig butchering part - we're vegetarians!!!

Am really enjoying reading Milly Molly Mandy (the same dogeared copies my parents read to me) to dd at bedtimes. She is 3 and adores them. Last night Uncle made a nest in the oak tree for her.
My favourite is when she gets her new bedroom in the boxroom they used to store the jam.
Bliss.

SoMuchToBits · 07/07/2006 17:43

Yes, loved MMM when I was a kid. Don't know if its too girly for ds though..

cupcakes · 07/07/2006 17:44

I haven't tried it on ds but I just might. At least there's Billy Blunt.

TooTicky · 07/07/2006 17:46

I love the Moomin books by Tove Jansson, The Brothers Lionheart, Pippi Longstocking, Ronja the robbers Daughter by Astrid Lindgren, proper Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne, Laura Ingalls Wilder books, Cynthia Harnett's beautiful historical stories, Room on the Broom, anything by Eva Ibbotson, - stop me! I could go on forever, I'm a complete obsessive!!!!

EmmyLou · 07/07/2006 20:44

For little ones - Here Comes the Train by Charlotte Voake. Simple, but a favourite with dd2 and dd3.

JanH · 07/07/2006 21:05

Monica Edwards, Elizabeth Enright, Noel Streatfeild.

JanH · 07/07/2006 21:07

The Jolly Postman & The Jolly Christmas Postman by the Ahlbergs, cheesecake

JanH · 07/07/2006 21:08

I Am David

Gobbledigook · 07/07/2006 21:09

As a child my favourite were Teddy Robinson books.

flutterbee · 07/07/2006 21:09

The faraway tree books are without doubt the best books I ever read when younger, I even read them as an adult every now and again. They really really should be made into a film.

I also loved loved loved the giant jam sandwich and the witch in the cherry tree, both classics and if you haven't read them you should.

peachygirl · 07/07/2006 21:10

'The house that sailed away' by Pat Hutchins

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 07/07/2006 21:10

Charlotte Sometimes

pebblemum · 07/07/2006 22:21

When i was little i loved reading The Wishing Chair stories, only threw them out a few years ago now wish i had kept them.

When i was about 8 i loved The Water Babies and Famous Five.

Ive heard they are changing some of the old Enid Blyton stories to make them more modern, why cant they leave them alone, they are classics

DS1 (9yrs) always used to love The Hungry Caterpillar and I Love You, now though he prefers horrid henry and Narnia.

Ds2 (2yrs)loves listening to books about Thomas the Tank Engine but he has got one book called 'my first book of diggers and dumpers' which he never puts down. As a result he can identify every type of machinery we go past in the car!!

TooTicky · 07/07/2006 22:47

Jimjams, thank you for reminding me about Charlotte Sometimes - I loved it too - I must get hold of a copy for my dd1

Naughtynoonoo · 07/07/2006 22:54

My naughty little sister stories when I was a child, found 2 books of this in a junk shop and was so excited, love reading it to my dd as I still enjoy it - saddo!

EmmyLou · 08/07/2006 10:15

Daddy Long Legs - must look it up on Amazon.

Charlotte Sometimes too - have bought it for dd1

Harriet the Spy - bit of a cult book amongst my friends and led to copy-cat-competetive diary keeping which was v disruptive!

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - will read this to dd1 (even though she can read it herself, I want a go!) by Judith Kerr. Part of a trilogy and great for around 10yrs old.

mousie · 08/07/2006 18:06

this is so nostalgic. loved Rumer Godden and also the Laura Ingalls Wilder. Loved The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goodge. Can;t wait til DD is old enough for these. though perhaps they are too dated now. Naughty Little sister still works really well and is good for reading aloud. Also Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett was great - better than Secret Garden which doesn't read out well IMO.
Charlotte sometimes sounds interesting, don't know what one.

From my own childhood I remember, Topsy & Tim, Heidi, Wind in the willows, and the Narnia books.

DH always read Thomas the tank engine to the children when they were small!

DD was an avid reader (still is),I remember her reading Mrs Pepperpot & Milly molly mandy.

There are so many brilliant books.I've kept all their childhood books.Just can't get rid of them!
