I have loads of favourites. But if I had to pick one, it would be
the Time it took Tom
Nothing deep and meaningful, or heartwarming or anything. Just very very funny.

Pumpkin Soup and The Baby who wouldn't go to bed" both by Helen cooper. Lovely illustrations. Nice text to read out loud.

Stig of the dump is great and The Faraway tree stories.

The Children of Greene Knowe is a lovely one that I remember from my childhood.

So many great books out there!

I love 'The Tiger who came to Tea'. I love the sureal quality of it, and I love the 60s decor and the cups and plates. I also love the fact that she keeps her nightie on to go out for tea!!

My boys love 'Where the wild things are' - I think that still appeals to small boys.

the tiger that came to tea too!

robinpud · 06/07/2006 19:46

Isabel's noisy tummy- David McKee

EmmyLou · 07/07/2006 14:11

The Baby Who Wouldn't go to Bed - Helen Cooper

The Tiger Who Came to Tea (ditto niceglasses comments)

Peepo - Janet and Alan Alberg. Great rhythm and fascinating pics for young ones to see how grandpa lived during the war.

For older ones, Mary Plain are great to read aloud, and Noggin the Nog. Narnia etc etc.

Will have to see if I can think of one overall favourite but I fear it might be futile and result in guilt for those left out...

Iklboo · 07/07/2006 14:14

Bogwoppit. I love that book so much I bought a copy in an ebay bidding war!

SoMuchToBits · 07/07/2006 14:19

Depends on the child's age. For ds age 5 our favourites are The snail and the whale (by Julia "gruffalo" Donaldson), Blue kangaroo books by Emma Chichester Clarke, and Little RedTrain books by Benjamin Blathwayt.

My own favourites from when I was an older child were Over Sea,Under Stone series by Susan Cooper (agree with you Dior) and the Earthsea books by Ursula K LeGuin.

Tommy · 07/07/2006 14:20

I loved Miss Happiness and Miss Flower too! and The Didakoi - written by the same person I think -Rumer Godden IIRC

For little children I am also a fan of the Tiger who came to tea - bought it recently for DS2 but I don't think he likes it as much as I do

DumbledoresGirl · 07/07/2006 14:21

When I was a child, my favourite books were the Laura Ingalls Wilder series. I re-read them endlessly.

sheepgomeep · 07/07/2006 14:57

Famous five and secret seven books
The faraway tree
Brer rabbit

older more teenage books
louise lawrence books

ComeOVeneer · 07/07/2006 15:03

From my childhood it was def. Charlotte's web and for my dd it is currently the Hairy Maclary books.

KBear · 07/07/2006 15:04

Peepo - for 0-2

Magic Faraway Tree for age 7ish up

I read a fantastic book to DS once about a boy on a train on a journey who stopped to pick up people, like a woman with no food for her baby and a child with no water and it was wonderful but also made me sad but I can't remember what it was called so not much point telling you!

iamapieceofcheesecake · 07/07/2006 15:09

The Velvetine Rabbit (used to make me cry!)
The Hungry Caterpillar
And does anyone remember the one about the postman? It had real letters in it.
