Keep seeing this everywhere, what's it like? Worth buying?

I read it a couple of weeks' ago. It didn't grab me to be honest - bit wishy washy. I'd try & borrow a copy if I were you. Or get it cheap!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/06/2011 18:29

Reading it at the mo, lkie Mummy said, its ok, just ok.

FreddoBaggyMac · 21/06/2011 20:30

I enjoyed it whilst reading it, some lovely original ideas but not much of a plot which makes it a bit forgettable imo.

FreddoBaggyMac · 21/06/2011 20:31

... its title is the best thing about it I think (but it is a great title!) Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/06/2011 20:40

Really must start proof reading.

Anyway, if you want to read it I'd try the MN Book Swap or the Kindle Reading Club.

Swarski · 21/06/2011 20:46

Its ok, some nice story lines by the narrative is weak and it is instantly forgettable when you have finished it,

NanAstley · 23/06/2011 09:46

It's all right. But "all right" isn't really the highest accolade you can give a book iyswim.

It started out great; whimsical and quirky, some uncomfortable topics touched on. But halfway through, the author seems to have lost steam. The narrative becomes slow and not very believable. Coincidence is piled upon coincidence. And in the end, everyone lives happily ever after Hmm

I felt slightly cheated to be honest. Especially as it began with such promise.

transferbalance · 24/06/2011 08:32

I read it a while ago, it's ok, some interesting charachters

I agree it ran out of steam and the whole 9/11 thing seemed contrived (hope that's not a spoiler)

agaat · 24/06/2011 10:36

ooh, I'm reading this at the moment. And I'm finding it deeply annoying but I have to finish it (not a spoiler, transferbalance, I've been expecting it). I think whimsical and quirky sums it up perfectly, but for me it's not in a good way. From now on I'm going to steer clear of books that have 'Reading Group Questions' included, because the books quite often have interesting themes that make good book club discussion fodder but the writing is often, in my opinion, substandard and I think it's cynical marketing on the part of the publishers.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/06/2011 13:30

Couldn't have put it better myself.

grumpypants · 24/06/2011 13:32

Really loved it until half way through when it just became a load of waffley sentimental cr*p. Agree totally re: books with reading group questions - like totally missing the point of discussing a book? Just point out the interesting bits as if readers are too thick to find them themselves?

ihatethecold · 24/06/2011 15:16

i started it on holiday, forgot about it for a few days, then realised when i carried on reading that i couldn't remember anything about the book... i've given up now

Penelope1980 · 26/06/2011 07:29

I loved the first half, but by the second half only finished it because I'd read that far so might as well have kept going if that makes sense. I am glad I got it from the library rather than buying it, although it wasn't a bad book or a waste of time

Pussinflatboots · 03/07/2011 18:54

I was really looking forward to reading this, but found it a real let-down. It was ok, but nothing more.

Orbinator · 04/07/2011 02:23

Another "not as good as had hoped" here. Readable but not particularly memorable.

ahshutupayourface · 04/07/2011 20:43

oh no! It is my bookclub book and I high hopes!

ahshutupayourface · 04/07/2011 20:43

had high hopes!

acsec · 04/07/2011 20:45

My mum has just given it to me to read, she really enjoyed it. I'll give it a go after Never the Bride by Paul Magrs (loving it so ridiculous)

proudfoot · 06/07/2011 03:51

I was disappointed!

I really liked the cover and title but the book didn't live up to it. I agree that it is "wishy washy" and a bit nothing-y... also some parts slightly irritated but won't say more in case I spoil it for anyone who does want to read.

acmeexplosives · 28/07/2011 16:54

I am half way through and absolutely loving it. No way is it wishy washy. It is beautifully written. I put it down today because I don't want to finish it. I guess I relate to Elly as I have a big brother. If I change my mind I will repost, but for now it is beautiful!

JaneBennet · 29/07/2011 08:06

I keep seeing very mixed reviews about this one - might give it a go though as I, too, love the title.

alibubbles · 29/07/2011 11:39

I'll send you my copy, I have read it, and it is in the charity box!

JaneBennet · 29/07/2011 14:32

OOoh, was that for me? How lovely, thank you.

alibubbles · 29/07/2011 17:16

elkiedee · 29/07/2011 21:41

I really enjoyed it.
