Keep seeing this everywhere, what's it like? Worth buying?

Like others on this thread, it started of brilliantly and just petered off half way through.
I wanted to hear more about Jenny Penny, my favourite character by far, but she just became secondary.
And the whole 9/11 think was a bit Hmm.
I'd give it a "Promising, but could do better".

piebald · 06/08/2011 20:19

I had bought it when i read these posts and nearly didnt bother picking it up, but have just read it over the last couple of days and really enjoyed it, it made me laugh quite often and yes it was fairly predictable . But as aquick easy read it was just fine

JaneBennet · 07/08/2011 10:50

Starting this one today, very mixed reviews online. I usually end up enjoying the books with reviews all over the place. Got to get through the Sunday papers first though...

JaneBennet · 08/08/2011 08:09

Well, that was a very quick read. I liked it as a light and fluffy book although there were segments of the book that made no sense whatsoever and didn't appear to be connected to the previous paragraph(s). There was so much violence that appeared to be glossed over. I understand why the author did it; it was used as a time marker rather than anything else.

KatharineClifton · 09/11/2011 19:05

I've just finished it and really enjoyed it. Definitely a book of two halves though.

I have a question though - at the book evening Arthur says he has run out of money, but it doesn't mean he has run out of money. What does it mean? Confused

KatharineClifton · 09/11/2011 21:41

It's page 247/248 if that helps? Goes like this:

''No, Elly. I've. Run. Out. Of. Money,' he said, clearly intonating each word, wringing out meaning until he could sense the understanding and implication spreading across my face.
'Oh my God.'
'Exactly.'
'Who else knows?'
''Only you.'

etc. then a bit about death including 'You can tell me now. How was it going to happen? How were you going to die?'

I haven't the foggiest what any of that page is about.

McPhee · 09/11/2011 22:20

I think that bit must have passed me by Blush sorry.

KatharineClifton · 09/11/2011 22:22

I think the bit that explains that bit passed me by. The hazards of late night reading perhaps!

I did like Arthur, and would rather like to read his book Grin

Sherbert37 · 09/11/2011 22:30

It means he was going to die soon. He said earlier that a yogi had told him the day he would die so he was going to budget for then. Think I remember that correctly. I also liked the book but found the ending annoying. Wanted to know what happened to Jenny Penny to put her in jail for so long.

McPhee · 09/11/2011 22:31

What grasped me was the way the imagery was described. I could almost sense myself sitting next to that waters edge, with the mist and the deer. Thundering up the long drive towards the big white house sitting proudly, with its amazing view . Then at totally the other end of the spectrum, the feeling of being thrust in to that awful scene in New York.

McPhee · 09/11/2011 22:32

Jenny Penny murdered her step father

KatharineClifton · 09/11/2011 22:36

Ah - the yogi! I do remember that now. Thank you :)

I found the survival of the brother a little annoying as well. Makes me sound a bit cold hearted, but it was a bit Disney for me when the rest of the book was so realistic.

McPhee · 09/11/2011 22:39

I agree, it did seem a little far fetched but not totally impossible. For her first published book, it was brilliant. And if I'm reading in to the ending correctly, I reckon there'll be a second Wink

KatharineClifton · 09/11/2011 22:46

Oh I agree. In my imagination now, when I want to escape, I am going to be a guest at Trehaven.

I found the depiction of a person with memory loss very interesting. I hadn't thought that it could/would change personality. I don't really know anything about it tbh, and now want to.

smartyparts · 09/11/2011 22:53

I thought it was a lovely book about relationships and love in all its forms.

It put me in mind of 'The Accidental' by Ali Smith which I also loved.

deaconblue · 11/11/2011 10:43

Jenny penny murdered her own husband who was abusing her in the way her step father had abused her mother

valiumredhead · 13/11/2011 15:35

There is one part which is very funny and that is it imo! Really struggled to finish it.

dadsrjustasgood · 14/02/2012 21:50

I loved it but one thing puzzled me what did Joe put in the biscuit tin?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 20/02/2012 16:56

I actually thought it got better as it went on. The start was straining for quirkiness, IMO, and I thought the writing was a bit creative-writing-class (trying very hard to find inventive and surprising vocabulary and turns of phrase, slightly missing the mark and grating). I thought the characters came into very sharp focus later on, and it made me cry a few times towards the end.

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/02/2012 16:59

I quite liked it but have to agree that it doesn't stay with you...

OhTinky · 20/02/2012 17:02

I'm reading it now, but I'm not that engaged with the story and there's not much character development.

Plus some parts are very poorly or oddly written, which is quite jarring, keep having to re-read bits to keep up with the plot Blush

Pleased I got it cheap - was a dodgy printed copy on sale in Waterstones. I do like the title and the cover. I'll never re-read it once iv finished though!

Sonji · 20/02/2012 20:55

I started to read it after a friend bought it for me at Christmas. To be honest, I couldn't get into it and I'd read a fair few chapters. I went on to something else. Maybe one day, I'll go back to itSmile

mumdebump · 23/02/2012 20:14

Dire book. Far too many characters who were completely irrelevant and mostly completely unbelievable. Could not relate to a single character or event in it. Rambling meandering plot. It was just trying too hard to be clever and failing on all counts.
Dadsrjustasood, which part was very funny? I must have missed it.

cybbo · 23/02/2012 20:16

I'm struggling with it

Its trying TOO hard to be whimsical, memorable and tear jerking

And failing on every level. Will give up, I think
