Has anyone hated 'Sister' by Rosamund Lupton as much as me?

I'm staggering through this book for my book group, but does anyone else think it is dull and badly written, and has loads of grammatical mistakes for a book which has been so hyped up? How do books like this get published?

i read it very quickly and I don't think i found it dull exactly, but I found quite a bit of it odd and unbelievable. most of it was resolved by the ending, which i actually found a bit unsatisfactory

AgentProvocateur · 08/05/2011 18:22

I wasn't a fan either. I thought it was badly written, and I just about threw the book across the room when I read the ending. It was like something my son would write in his Standard Grade English exam.

Bluebell99 · 08/05/2011 18:25

It was the first book I bought on my Kindle and I hated it. Overhyped rubbish.

sonearsofar · 08/05/2011 18:27

it's the 1st book bought for my Kindle as well! I feel as though it's a real waste of money as I'm justgoing to delete it and can't even pass it on th a charity shop

I thought it was rubbish !

emilielondon · 08/05/2011 21:22

I downloaded it as an audiobook and it wasn't even passable then. Seemed to take aggeeess and get nowhere. Gave up after around chapter 6. Will be deleting...

Me!! Bought it on Amazon after review on MN. Hated it. Then had to feign interest when my mum gave me a copy for Christmas! Glad it wasn't just me. It could've been so much better...

mummybookworm · 09/05/2011 18:53

I finished it last week and hated it. A very odd book in all really I feel.

kickingking · 09/05/2011 18:57

DH put it in my stocking at Christmas. Thought it was crap - poor DH!

Aimsmum · 09/05/2011 19:18

I found it all a bit odd all the way through, then the ending made me want to rip it up! (but it was a library book!!)

atswimtwolengths · 09/05/2011 21:38

I hated it more than you did! The ending was probably one of the worst endings I've ever read - I can't believe the publishers accepted that.

GColdtimer · 09/05/2011 21:49

Was just about to start reading this (picked it up at a charity shop). Don't think I will bother now Grin

QuickLookBusy · 09/05/2011 21:55

I read it recently and it was so bad I can't even remember the blooming ending Grin Unless someone tells me I will have to go and find it and reread the end. Don't make me...please

FetchezLaVache · 09/05/2011 21:59

Oh no, I got it in my Christmas stocking too but haven't read it yet (because, tbh, I took agin it because I felt that "Sister" was a shite name for a book). Ah well, at least my hopes won't be high when I do get round to it!

Hatespinkcantcook · 09/05/2011 22:13

I agree completely far fetched. Struggled through it. Wish I hadn't bothered

CatPower · 09/05/2011 22:17

I read it recently, thought it was fairly mince for the most part, and at the ending I could have ripped it in half. Useless awful ending. What annoyed me more was at the end there was a short interview with the author who said....SPOILERS....that she believed that she was saved at the end, she wasn't imagining the voices. WHY NOT JUST RIGHT THAT, THEN? WHY THE STUPID ~EXCITING~ ENDING?

smartyparts · 09/05/2011 22:21

I also got it amongst a questionable selection of books from dh in my stocking at Christmas. I have given up. It was so boring I couldn't bear another page.

bluejeans · 10/05/2011 08:10

I've only managed to get rid of one of my two copies (see above) so if anyone who hasn't read it is curious to see how bad it is, PM me!

roundthehouses · 10/05/2011 08:16

it was ok, not particularly good but better than e.g. ´Room´ imo.

squashedfly · 10/05/2011 09:44

A friend lent it to me after raving about it - keep trying to like it but it's just not doing it for me - I told my friend and she was incredulous and has insisted I persevere with it but I don't know if I can, it has been on my bedside table for weeks now untouched. I think life's too short to read crap books that don't grab you, when there are so many others out there that will....

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 10/05/2011 12:03

Oh no -this is my next book to read...maybe I wont bother, lol!

SerapisBey · 10/05/2011 22:35

felt i had t read it as was lent by a friend who raved about it. didn't enjoy it, it felt a bit too manufactured and clumsy, liked the ideas behind it though...

Buda · 10/05/2011 23:05

Just finished it. Not overly impressed. Ending tries to be clever but I would have preferred a more definite ending.

Am glad I have finished it though as was bored with it.

Really had to make myself read it.

sonearsofar · 11/05/2011 21:06

I've given up and jumped to the end to see they have what must be the most annoying development in modern fiction - the suggested list of questions for book groups - just how stupid do the publishers think we are?

I quite liked it.

I'll get my coat...
