One Day by David Nicholls

Anyone else enjoyed this? Liked the idea of a diary kept on the same day each year (wish I had thought of that). Found the idea that each year we live through the eventual day of our death quite disturbing though. Lots of topical references for those who left uni in late 1980s. Film coming next year.

I thought it was wonderful. Couldn't identify with all of it (not too many (any!) drugs in my life) but the timings were spot on. Am about to give it to my best friend (male, but gay!) for Christmas. Hope he doesn't take it the wrong way!

Sherbert37 · 22/12/2010 14:45

Yes my post university life was a lot tamer!

Loved loved loved this book. Couldn't put it down. My DH has just bought me Starter for Ten which is David Nicholls fist novel but I'm sure it won't be as good as One Day.

kslatts · 29/12/2010 09:43

I really loved this book too.

comewhinewithme · 29/12/2010 09:44

I loved it.Starter for ten was good but nowhere near as good as One Day.

beanandspud · 02/01/2011 22:04

Loved it - can't wait for the film.

Starter for 10 is also very good.

OracleOfDelphinium · 02/01/2011 22:09

OK - until the end. That didn't agree with me at all.

I preferred the Line of Beauty for 80s nostalgia. I thought that was utterly fabulous.

vanimal · 02/01/2011 22:12

Same, loved the book but not the end so much, it seemed quite rushed to me.

But other than that it's fab, really drew me in, and was the first book I have actually managed to finish since having DD2 18 months ago!

earwicga · 03/01/2011 23:47

Starter For Ten is just as good neenewps.

Loved this book, but was very angry at David Nichols for what he did at the end.

ValiumTinselton · 03/01/2011 23:49

earwicga+1

eeneemeeneemineemo · 03/01/2011 23:52

I haven't managed to read to the end as I got too upset at the obvious stage (sorry I don't want to spoil it for anyone thinking of reading it who hasn't already).

Should I persist with it anyway?

earwicga · 03/01/2011 23:52

Yes you should. I stopped at that point too. But picked it back up a couple of days later.

FoxyRevenger · 07/01/2011 22:28

I love Starter for Ten, read it fairly often actually, but One Day...I had to read it twice as the first time I just didn't get why the characters liked each other.

They just seemed so different to each other and a bit sullen and antagonistic towards each other. It's ok, but I was hoping for slightly better things, I think.

Gillybobs · 07/01/2011 22:43

Loved the book, but re the upcoming movie am horrified at the casting of Anne Hathaway as Emma. Really? They couldnt find a great British actress to play this wonderful part?

TwoIfBySea · 11/01/2011 23:33

Really enjoyed this book right up until the end. Nope, not at all good there.

Spoiled the whole thing for me which is a shame as I was so loving the tale up until that point.

woollyideas · 13/01/2011 16:33

Don't understand the hype about this book, or why it has won awards. Although it was funny in parts, I found it dull and predictable.

A bit of a yawn really.

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 13/01/2011 16:35

I didn't think it was funny at all. Quite readable, then the ending was poor. DH thought the same. Bit over-hyped IMO.

watfordmummy · 13/01/2011 16:37

read it and felt it a bit light, found characters very annoying especially her!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 13/01/2011 16:38

god, this was terrible. I had to finish it though to find out what happened to those two. Wasn't moved by That Bit.

I definitely agree that The Line of Beauty is better for a spot of 80s nostalgia.

scampadoodle · 13/01/2011 16:39

It was ok. A beach read. Agree the characters were annoying.

melifluous · 13/01/2011 18:44

I really enjoyed One Day and it will always be even more special as it was one of the first books myself and my 20 year old daughter really had a great conversation about..she is due to leave University next year and I was able to talk about life and love straight after leaving university nearly 30 years ago in the eighties.....felt really nice!

ramonaquimby · 13/01/2011 18:54

agree, didn't like it. he wasn't very likable at all

Cyb · 13/01/2011 19:07

I loved it but was reading on a gloriously sunny Portugese poolside which makes any book better

'that bit' shocked me! wasnt expecting it

Agree he was unlikeable-but I quite liked that about him

BertieBotts · 13/01/2011 19:13

I really liked it, but it grated how nearly every single year it would be them meeting up and "Oh wow we haven't seen each other for ages!" ... and they just happened to meet on the exact same day each time? Why wasn't the day ever something mundane like having a dentist appointment?

I know that wouldn't have made a good book though! I did love it when I could put that to one side. The ending was a bit weird though.

woollyideas · 13/01/2011 19:30

I saw 'that bit' coming a mile off. Along with 'that other bit'.
