@thenewaveragebear1983 you sound really knowledgeable about nutrition and I know whole 30 is a recognised system, but I really worry that you just dont eat enough. Hope that’s not stepping out of line, and God knows, I’m not a great advert for more moderate eating patterns. Sometimes it almost sounds like you are punishing yourself, and you have such a busy life. Please go easy on yourself.

effiesgoldwig · 23/08/2023 00:31

Checking in from wales. No wifi, patchy mobile data, kids having a great time with the exception of the littlest who has been cranky and unsettled all week hasn't really slept properly since we arrived and is now covered in chicken pox spots.

My eating has been a disaster as a consequence. I am just shovelling toast and chocolate into my body at an alarming rate and all hours of the day. I dread to think the damage that has been done but it's survival mode here.

We are taking shifts to sleep and to take the older kids out because now the plague baby is confined to the caravan.

I was seriously considering taking her home and leaving DH here with the older kids but I know they would be disappointed if I did that. Maybe we will just make a vaguely earlier exit nearer the end of the week.

Ledochas · 23/08/2023 00:59

Oh @effiesgoldwig not the pox! Plague baby made me laugh. Have you got poxcillin? Highly recommend.

Ledochas · 23/08/2023 01:01

Btw once spots are out I don't think they're contagious? Maybe I'm confused. I took DD to a wedding 2 weeks after the pox, still had the spots. Wasn't contagious. People kept their distance 😂

effiesgoldwig · 23/08/2023 02:35

Definitely contagious until the spots crust over. I'm going home tomorrow. The neighbouring caravans will thank me for it. I can hear them grumbling in the lulls between the crying. There's only two more nights but I can't do another night like this. At least at home I have all her things and she might be more comfortable.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/08/2023 08:45

Oh @effiesgoldwig , what a shame! That Virasoothe stuff is excellent if there’s a pharmacy where you are? Mine were so poorly with CP, it’s really miserable. 💐

@Zebracat aw thanks for being concerned. Admittedly my dinner last night was a car crash, but generally I think I eat enough or too much and most days I finish on 1500+ cals. I dont really lose weight easily on that either. It’s hard to judge isn’t it because the gym crowd would all say eat more calories to loose weight, and yet the diet crowd say you absolutely MUST be in deficit to even lose half a pound a week 🤷‍♀️ so I don’t know if I’m eating too much or not enough. Tdee calc says 1750 ish to maintain for me not including exercise cals, then other people say you cannot possibly trust a sports watch estimating your exercise cals so I try to stick to a deficit from my tdee. And then realistically, if I aim lower than 1300 I get too hungry, and any higher and I’m just loosing a couple of ounces a week. Basically I am perpetually stuck at this weight. I Bob around losing a pound/gaining a pound but I think that’s just water. My actual weight is pretty much stable- how depressing. The whole30 helps me because it stops me craving bread/sugar etc which overall makes the whole diet easier to stick to. I can just do my 3 meals and a bit of fruit and I’m good. And honestly, my meals are generally good and nutritious with fat and lots of protein. (Ignore yesterdays potato experience 😂)

Ledochas · 23/08/2023 09:02

Ah sorry to hear a bad night @effiesgoldwig. Sounds like going home is the right thing

@thenewaveragebear1983 enjoy Devon and hope the change of scenery helps - and beautiful surroundings!

Weighing in for week 6 of my reset today and so very pleased to say I weighed in at 159.8. Yes the 150s I am in! (okay absolutely scraped in and likely to bounce around 159-160 now for a while no doubt. That's -1.4 off this week and 14.4lb off in total.

My next target is 157lb but let's be honest I really want 5.8lb off to get below 154lb. I have guests this week and next and there's been booze and snacks... I'm limiting as much as I can but my willpower doesn't cover them all!

I have an event in just under 3 weeks and a holiday in 5. So got to keep the focus. Like you @poorpaws when I hit certain numbers I relax a bit. Not this time hopefully!

Have a great day everyone Flowers

triplecheeese · 23/08/2023 12:36

Oh @effiesgoldwig what a mare. Chickenpox is hideous, my baby was in hospital for several days with it and missed lots of fun family stuff. Virasoothe, baby piriton, aqueous calamine cream is AMAZING if you can get it, calpol and if you think it is really bad you can get antivirals. Ignore the snarky neighbours, they were sick toddlers once too! My kids would only eat jelly and ice cream because their throats were sore, so that's what we all ate. Do what you need to do xx

effiesgoldwig · 23/08/2023 15:54

I'm home and grateful for it! Little one is much happier. You just want to be at home when you're poorly really.

Zebracat · 23/08/2023 17:43

@effiesgoldwig . Aww poor baby. Hope she feels better soon.
@thenewaveragebear1983 you know-so much, but sometimes our bodies know too, and if you get a strong carb crave, maybe you could just have some? I know this doesnt work for sugar though, and I do get that carbs are now just seen as complex sugars. But I’m old and I’ve seen dietary advice go through so many incarnations, that I’m now a bit suspicious. You are very active and you are not eating much. If you aren’t losing weight, maybe you could try eating a bit more. Or maybe I need to acknowledge that my Irish mother who based every meal around potatoes or bread was hardly dr Michael whoever, and fatally affected my understanding of what a proper plate of food looks like. Is this why I’m fat?

Zebracat · 23/08/2023 17:44

Crikey random hyphen is making this look really sarcastic. I don’t even know how it got there!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/08/2023 21:36

@Zebracat 😂 not at all.
tbf I do eat carbs, and even more so when i’m doing whole30 because potatoes and sweet potatoes are not just allowed but recommended! But just not sugar, or bread/grains.

Theredjellybean · 24/08/2023 22:55

Sorry I've been a bit M I A..
Just catching up ...chicken pox is horrible...I never had it despite yes of working as a doctor in ED and then as a GP...
I must have some magic immunity...I dread getting it now as oldie.
My diet has not been so good and stuck at 71.7 this week..I have 10 days until holidays.
I am hoping to get to 70.5 and limit holiday damage to 72 kgs..
It's a very active sports based holiday...I live in hope...
@thenewaveragebear1983 ...I am also old and seen diet advice cycle through carbs bad, carbs good, fat is evil, fat is king, less protein more fibre, more protein but no sugar is now root of all evil...so I'm.in the overall moderation camp.
You do stack loads of exercise so unless your portion sizes are bonkers I'm puzzled to your lack of weight loss.
I don't usually suggest this (as for most people they genuinely need to eat less) but have you had bloods done for thyroid function and diabetes and insulin resistance...

poorpaws · 25/08/2023 08:05

Hi everyone

@Theredjellybean I wondered where you were, lovely to see you back. You are still doing well, still keeping the figures down. If you don't pop in again, have a lovely holiday.

@effiesgoldwig how is the lovely little un? Such bad timing to be poorly, I hope all is ok now.

I'm still doing alright but had to ditch the exercises as my ME kicked in and let me know I've been doing too much. I do push it, had it since May 2000 so am good at controlling it, but this week I have no energy at all. Managing shorter dog walks with a long sit down at a place with a glorious view of the sea and Brixham harbour in the distance so it's not all bad. My older dog needs to rest frequently too, she's noticeably stiffening at the rear end where her cancer is so I'm not sure how long we can keep her for.

My food has been good but without all the exercises I think I've gained a little 😬

I hope you are all doing well and manage to keep control over the Bank Holiday weekend; it's not an easy thing to do.

Morning all,

sorry to hear you’re not feeling well @poorpaws , a few days rest will help I hope.
@Theredjellybean i get the annual blood test for diabetes because I had gestational diabetes 3 times, it’s always well within normal. I did have thyroid checked a few weeks back, the result returned ‘sub clinical’ and I need retested in 3 months. They’ve now given me HRT patches which I am yet to start (will start tomorrow on day 4 of cycle).

I’m still down in Devon, dh joining us today and we’ll have a couple of days here until Monday. It’s been a nice end to the summer, the weather has changed now and I’m quite ready (ish) for September. After years of working in education, and with teacher parents, September always feels like a new year to me, a fresh start - so I’m feeling quite optimistic. We have a very busy month ahead with things on every weekend, all the way up to first week of October when dh and I have a spa weekend away at a beautiful hotel which was a gift for my 40th. So a lot of nice things to look forward to 😻

Would love to know the hotel.
I am looking for something like that.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/08/2023 08:35

@Writingonthewalls it’s the Malvern spa hotel. We got married in Malvern so we like to go back there occasionally, this spa is lovely, it has a thermal pool that’s indoor and outdoor so it’s really lovely on a cold evening! Last time we went I’d just found out I was pregnant with ds and I was in the throes of all day sickness and couldn’t use the steam rooms and sauna etc so…. We are just really looking forward to a day of walking, a pub lunch and a laze by the pool.

triplecheeese · 26/08/2023 09:35

Ugh. Whyyyyyyyy

I had a work leaving do yesterday. I am not a big drinker, I like a glass of wine but just the one, two on a VERY special occasion. Yesterday, no idea why, I was just guzzling buckets of booze. And now I've got my first hangover in six years (eg pre pregnancy!) and two small people climbing on me 😂

the scales look good but that's dehydration so doesn't count!

whyyyyyyy

triplecheeese · 26/08/2023 09:37

Sounds lovely @thenewaveragebear1983! DH and I are off to a spa tomorrow for a much needed break after a super stressful few months. The steam room will be healing I'm sure

Zebracat · 26/08/2023 12:17

@triplecheeese Why not? Everyone does dumb things sometimes, and I expect it was fun. Water is you friend, carbs are your friend. Ibuprofen is etc.

Zebracat · 26/08/2023 12:22

I have been strict all week, and also building my exercise. Scales tell me I have gained a kilo. It’s not fair.

Catcatcatcatcat · 26/08/2023 12:29

@Zebracat that's so annoying. It just feels so unfair, but don't let it demotivate you.

Not quite the same, but I am currently in a plateau and very cross about it. I know the scales will shift eventually, but it feels like a lot of sacrifice for no gain (loss!)

I am off on holiday week after next and it's the dreaded All Inclusive, so I really want to have lost a bit more before that. I am currently 12 stone exactly, and I don't need to tell you lot what a huge mental boundary it will be when I finally see 11 stone something...

@triplecheeese I feel for you. I don't drink at all any more as it really just wasn't a friend to me as I got older. I don't miss it at all, and I used to drink A LOT. I'm probably lucky I was able to just drop it to be honest - obviously nothing like your very modest drinking habits.

I want to go for a walk but it's pouring with rain and looks so miserable out. What a shit summer it's been.

TalkToTheHand123 · 26/08/2023 15:59

Hi all. Back to England (and the rain). Put a few lbs on, which wasn't too much of a suprise. So back on it now.🙄

triplecheeese · 26/08/2023 19:27

@Zebracat and @Catcatcatcatcat you're both right. It was fun and fine. I just can't handle the hangovers or the hangxiety... I guess that is me getting on a bit! It's been so long that I couldn't remember what my hangover cures are 😂

sorry about the frustrating gain zebracat. Hoping it is just a blip. Good luck catcat, i am sure the 11s are just around the corner! AI doesn't have to be a disaster, in fact it's okay to have a buffet or selection so you can manage your own choices. Don't deprive yourself, enjoy yourself and we'll all be here when you get back.

welcome back @TalkToTheHand123! the rain is a bit wild today and I've been caught in it twice 🌧️

TalkToTheHand123 · 27/08/2023 07:41

Thanks @triplecheeese , talking of buffets, I need to remind myself that they are there for different options and not have all of them.

I picked up some salad stuff yesterday, avoided alcohol and had an earlish night to put me on a good footing today.
