I will try with boost month. Surgery on 13 th, so it will be good to be careful.I loved your day of counting everything @poorpaws . I think it’s useful to do that. I certainly cant always do it. I weighed my breakfast porridge this morning and found I have way less than I should! Another birthday here today so I’ve had a small slice of cake and we are going out for a meal tonight, but I will be careful.. I’m walking more because I like to see the new dog doing his thing, so that’s good for calories. Really hurts my hip though.

Gigi789 · 30/06/2023 15:11

i’m going to give July a real go, I’ve got lots of stuff going on and so far only 1 Saturday night booked which may involve alcohol and a late night if I’m not careful. Yes, I’m prepping this weekend ready for next week and weighing/logging EVERYTHING!! I’ve only been overweight in my 40s so I quite like weighing and measuring stuff (admittedly it makes your heart sink when you weigh a “portion size”) weirdo

poorpaws · 30/06/2023 16:25

@Zebracat your birthday or a family member do you mean? It's my granddaughters birthday today but I won't see her so there won't be any cake for me.

Well I've been angelic so far today but I'm ravenous again. Cottage pie in the oven will put me on about 1200 calories for the day. Then I just need to not eat everything within reach this evening.

Zebracat · 30/06/2023 18:21

Dds birthday, but she does live here. Mines next week!

PinkArt · 30/06/2023 18:35

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983. I'm ignoring the traffic lights system as I agree, chicken thighs are not the enemy! I think it might work for me beyond that though - there's a lot of accountability in reporting everything I eat and drink in it and I think that might be what I need. And I think the ethos that it's about mindset, not cabbage soup or cayenne pepper and maple syrup.
It'd be £147 for the 10 months it's suggesting I could hit my goal weight in (unlikely but sod it, I'm happy to try optimism). That sounds loads until I thought about how much money I'd give to magically be the weight I want to be and it would be away more than that! So £147 and a lot of effort might be worth it. I've still got over a week of trial to go though.
Annoyingly I'm only a pound down this week. I've been quite puritanical so was a bit disappointed with that, but hopefully more results will show by next Friday.

Zebracat · 30/06/2023 22:35

2200 calories today , but lots of exercise. So we will see if I can lose weight on that. I saidI could!

Gigi789 · 30/06/2023 23:40

@PinkArt i tried Noom, didn’t like the additional charges I wasn’t expecting which put me right off. There are free meal checkers which I’m trialing. I need to drink more water which I’m struggling with….

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2023 07:32

Morning ladies.

I had an email from nutracheck yesterday to say their monthly fee is going up from £3.99 to £5.99 which does seem like an excessive increase and a big jump all in one go. I didn’t ever go beyond the free trial for Noom, but £147 although it’s not huge, does seem quite expensive but I suppose it depends what you actually want/need from it. If it’s accountability, then I guess that comes at a higher price than just food advice and a place to diarise your food. I suppose it’s the same reason why people pay to attend WW and SW but follow their own diets because they need the accountability of stepping on scales in front of people.

I had an ok day yesterday, food was fine then I went to a PTA function and drank a can of sparkling wine on an empty stomach and felt pretty rough when I got in. I’m not very well actually, with a sore throat and headcold, and this morning I feel quite horrific. So no run for me as planned and I’m staying in bed with a lemsip. I haven’t weighed myself but I think yesterday I was fairly successful calorie and carb wise, despite the wine.

poorpaws · 01/07/2023 08:37

@thenewaveragebear1983 sorry to hear you aren't well and hope you feel much better soon. I dread a summer cold, I find it far worse than a winter one but do look after yourself and rest.

Nothing much to report this morning. I'm going to walk the dogs to dds and hope to get exercise in this afternoon.

I was incredibly hungry when I woke up this morning, it wasn't a nice feeling at all so I think I have to address my evenings eating. I've gone from snacking all evening to a tiny bowl of shreddies and perhaps I need a little more. I might up the protein tonight, I have extra large eggs so that might be a better idea.

Happy 1st July everyone, let's see if we can all do well with both weight loss and exercise for the whole of July 😁

@Theredjellybean How are you? You've gone a bit quiet and I hope you're ok. How is dsd? I hope she's doing well too. No need to come back here if you're mood is low but I just wanted to check that you're alright. 💐

Ledochas · 01/07/2023 09:49

Morning everyone, happy weekend. Sorry to hear a lot of people are feeling a bit low.

I had a rare night out last night and had a few wines but determined not to let it dictate the whole weekend. Wine needs to happen now and then rather than be feared!

I am definitely up for a boost month (love the term). A month is a long time though - might need to break it down into more bitesize-like chunks!

Noom - I tried it a couple of years ago and not sure I'd spend £147 on it. I have a premium subscription for MyFitnessPal and not sure I use it enough to justify that either but it's handy to be able to look at what I'm eating in a bit more detail.

Question... protein shakes. Worth adding into diet? I eat quite a bit of meat but wondering if I should tip more protein in as a boost?! Or just wasted calories?

poorpaws · 01/07/2023 15:19

@Ledochas Not that I know anything but I'd give protein shakes a miss. I'm guessing they are liquid protein in a glass (?). For a start I don't like milk shakes and I'm guessing these are similar and I'd go for more eggs, maybe fish etc. I find boiled eggs very filling. As I said though I don't know what I'm talking about so hopefully someone with more knowledge and experience of them will be along soon.

Day has been good so far. But the rest of the family want Chinese takeaway for tea. 🚨Danger! 🚨

I'm going to have a small potion and I'm going to enjoy every bite and keep it in my calorie limit.

Theredjellybean · 01/07/2023 17:06

Hello all....I've been quiet as just had to go away for work, giving evidence at an enquiry which was a bit tricky and not pleasant.
And then trying to see dsd...
And now on a short holiday.
It's all been a bit disasterous on waistline and I daren't step on scales.
So currently got three days more all inclusive holiday...luckily food and included wine is not great...but white bread is good the world over !!!
I did do a run yesterday and lots of beach walking...
I'm just going to try not to go mad but also get the very needed break and tackle the damage when I'm back...next Wednesday is d -day ( damage day).
Hope everyone is doing good, I'm just going to go and read thread to catch up...

Theredjellybean · 01/07/2023 17:10

@poorpaws ...just seen your thoughtful enquiry.
Yes dsd is doing ok , gained 4kgs in 4 weeks...and seems very positive, really getting a lot out of the therapy etc.
She is going to stay another 4 weeks which is good ..it's voluntary she isn't sectioned , so hopeful she is really engaged.
I'm just thanking my lucky stars or maybe hers that her father had health insurance that covers her.

Theredjellybean · 01/07/2023 17:13

I am also going to see July as a whole boost month....dsd will still be in patient so I don't need to feed her. I have no trips or exciting things planned, I'm not going to London or anywhere else on work...I'm going to humher down in Cornwall and do lots of running and weights and stick to calories and not drink ...ok last one might be tough call...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2023 17:30

@Ledochas I have some protein shake powder and it’s so incredibly sweet, it’s artificial sweeteners so not excessively calorific but it just ramps up my sugar cravings off the scale. I don’t even feel like it’s a low calorie way to consume X grams of protein, one shake is 200 cals. It doesn’t work as a meal replacement for me, certainly not for breakfast. I do like a shake though, I do coconut milk or almond milk, frozen fruit, matcha powder if I fancy a quick easy breakfast.
One thing to research is a BCAA supplement, basically it’s the little bits of amino acids that actually make dietary protein more useable and accessible, and everything I read suggests they are a good supplement for women, before you start increasing protein. Most people who eat meat get enough dietary protein anyway. Then find ways to increase protein so switch snacks for eggs, Tin tuna, fishcakes and sweet chilli (yum) etc. I take a BCAA and I find it noticeable in my energy levels while running and afterwards. It’s worth reading into it and researching what you want, and trying a few options,

poorpaws · 02/07/2023 08:09

Good morning lovelies

@Theredjellybean I'm so pleased you are ok. I was beginning to think there was a problem or you'd given up with us. Enjoy your holiday.

I'm discovering a huge mindset change in me. As you all know my evening snacking was off the scale and I had to make big changes. Last night I had one granola bar (absolutely allowed for a Saturday night treat, in fact I allow myself three per week which I haven't eaten) and the guilt was immense ☺️ even this morning I was saying "you shouldn't have eaten that" and feeling I'd let myself down. I hadn't, it was planned for, I enjoyed it and it wasn't chocolate. When I think back to what I used to consume it was pure gluttony and I'm hoping not to get to those levels of gluttony again.

So the week has gone well, I'm on track (I think) and at this rate I'll look like Twiggy or some other waif very soon 🙊

Have a good Sunday everyone. My weigh-in tomorrow morning and I'm thinking (hoping) it may be good news.

Zebracat · 02/07/2023 08:36

@poorpaws .Very good news, well done, you have been so honest about your eating and so open to suggestions. Impressive . I do think a boiled egg , or a handful of nuts would be a better supper than a granola bar, they are just greenwashed ultra processed food.
I think my weight tomorrow is going to be up. I’m hoping it will be a teaching moment for me though. For years I’ve clung to the idea that I’m not really obese, that I have a big frame and a good metabolism, and that I can easily lose weight. I have a an under active thyroid and a BMI of 33,ffs, yet still clung to that irrational deluded nonsense.
I have lost over 2 stone since last October, so I havent stood still but I don’t want to be fat anymore. It’s my birthday this week and I am having surgery this month, so don’t know how active I can be. I will have to stop swimming, and I do 60 lengths most days so that is tough. I will need to be properly strict about my calories, if I don’t want to gain weight.
I think this is the first time I have approached a life event that could result in weight gain without think great I can eat what I like, it wont be my fault if I put on weight. Truth hurts.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2023 08:37

@poorpaws excited to hear your results!

I went over on both calories and carbs yesterday. I was so unwell all day, barely moved off the sofa, slept for hours and grazed on toast. My ds (11) cooked a chicken tikka massalla and naan breads for dinner and I had a few maltesers. So nothing too extreme except I know what that sudden intake of carbs does when you’ve not had them all week probably gained 5lbs . However, I feel much much better today although still not 100%. I may even contemplate a short run this morning. I’m not sure if I will weigh in today though, I had been doing very well and I think a weigh in this morning might not be in my favour.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2023 08:42

@Zebracat you May be surprised the impact of not exercising will have on your weight loss though. The key is to keep your muscle as best as possible, keep your protein up. A friend of mine who exercises daily just had 4 weeks off with pneumonia and found that she actually lost weight but had lost muscle tone as well as overall body fat. You may find your appetite diminishes as well if you aren’t doing daily exercise. It may not end up the way you think it will.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2023 09:23

So I did weigh in, and overall this week I’d lost 2lbs which is actually ok considering the mitigating factors however I had dipped quite a bit lower than that mid week when I was fully in the throes of low carb. But 2lbs is ok and it’s 2lbs so 🤷‍♀️
Back on the low carb low cal wagon this week though, from today!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 02/07/2023 09:25

Hi all

It's been a strange few days...
a ridiculously early start to drop DS for school trip. I'm not very good with 3am wake ups! I munched my way through the tiredness via the biscuit tin 🙈

Then had the big party on Friday eve and I managed to avoid pigging out on the food vans (only had a couple of slices of pizza) and quite a few gin and tonics 🙂 and didn't feel as though I was missing out 👍

Was good yesterday - called in at Greggs for a free coffee (thank you O2) and omg the smell of bacon rolls... but we resisted and had a salad sprinkled with bacon and balsamic vinegar with a smidge of grated cheese when we got back from our walk which was delicious.

Did 23000ish steps yesterday (2 long walks) but had chilli with cubed potatoes and garlic bread for dinner, oops.

Was dreading getting on the scales this morning and....

I'm 13st 13 😀

I've dropped into the next band and I feel SO happy.

I don't think I have the motivation for a boost month but I think for me being consistent with exercise and really moderating snacks and wine, avoiding breakfast, cutting down on carbs and sticking to salads and as much veg as poss seems to be working.

I'm not religious about counting calories and very much tend to estimate so I might give the proper weighing out a go for a few days next week and see how many I'm really consuming. Will be interesting I think!

TalkToTheHand123 · 02/07/2023 10:31

Hi all. I was tortured with a daytime takeaway pizza on Friday, managed to avoid, but fell for chocolate and donught the day before. Not too bad overall considering. Couldn't get a swim in yesterday so hoping to get a couple the next couple of days. Currently having a lie in so getting in a few gentle tummy tenses in ☺️
