Okay girls, how do I loose about half a stone before a wedding on Monday? Hummm? Lost over a stone on WW but hit the mother of all plateaus...........................

ark · 24/08/2005 12:39

only moderately confused but sounds like a plan - i will try anything! Bright eyes is that the calculation for 18 points as an average?

Catsmother - you go girl - am not organised enough to go on jno count although maybe that is where I am going wrong!

ark · 24/08/2005 12:40

hey niceglasses - is this about weight or the way you look - get doing those sit ups - lots of exercise no count soups, fruit veg and water - think would be tricky to loose whole half stone but hey you might lose something or..... your'll fart like a trouper the whole way through!

niceglasses · 24/08/2005 12:45

OO worth a try ark. Erm, bit of both probably. I'm not massively o/weight but about 10st and 5 5" .......far heavier than pre 3 kids. Would really like to loose just half stone as would then fit a good lot of my clothes.........

Only trouble is still bfeeding 14mnth old girl, very little though - mainly at night/morning. Can I cut back and she will be okay??

ark · 24/08/2005 13:04

eek - no idea about bf and ww points - lots of peeople on here do though s not doubt they will post helpful things soon. I'd go shop for new shiny out fit to go with your nice glassses aint that what weddings are for

OOOO just thought of a new motivation for me have a wedding in october could try loose next half stone by then - bugger plateauing!

Ark .... I know I risk sound like an evangelist for NoCount every time I open my mouth but think it's so great that I can't help spouting off about it.

I really don't think you have to be that organised to do NC. I didn't buy anything that wasn't already in my cupboard when I started this for example, just staples like crispbread, low fat soft cheese and tuna ..... which I'd have stocked up on doing Points anyway. The only "new" thing I've bought that I wouldn't usually is porridge oats .... I was previously under the misapprehension that it took hours to make real porridge for some reason, but it doesn't, and it's really nice !

The only thing I would say is that NC is probably going to work better if you enjoy cooking, as a lot of stuff is made from scratch. That didn't bother me - but obviously if you're very busy it might be easier to eat pointed ready meals and so on. It's also useful to be interested in cooking as you do have to use your imagination and make substitutions in "normal" recipes, but really, it's amazing how often you can do that without any ill-effect.

catsmother · 24/08/2005 16:11

Niceglasses - when I did points last year I was also breastfeeding, but still continued to lose, even when I started to wean her. I doubt if you did cut back that your baby would suffer - I expect what would happen though is that the nutrients would go into your breastmilk first, and therefore, there might be a small risk that you'd feel headachey, a bit tired and so on.

Rather than cut back the points/food, could you not increase exercise instead ? Weather permitting, I'm trying to walk for at least an hour every day - it's the only thing I can do with a flipping pushchair - and though I've not got a pedometer, reckon this is probably just over 3 miles. That will also tone up your legs, bum and stomach too !

ark · 24/08/2005 16:34

i cook a lot at home - that wouln't be a problem - my worry is that I entertain for work 3-4 times a week - this has always been a problem ,, lunches out drinks, afternoon tea etc and so no count is no problem for brekkie and in evening its mainly the working day whioch buggers the whole thing up. Perhaps I should start trying harder! Am going to wendi this week and then no count following as will be quieter week work wise.
I'll come and get all good ideas from you in plenty of time!

jasper · 24/08/2005 16:40

catsmother well done. You have every right to go on about no count - it seems to be working really well. I lost 2 and a half stone with points 2 y ago but have regained a stone and am really struggling to get my head round doing something about it. Latterly at WW ( stopped going about 5 months ago ) I just could not stick to my points .
Any encouragement appreciated.

jasper · 24/08/2005 16:41

catsmother meant to ask how much in total do you want to lose and how far on are you?

catsmother · 24/08/2005 22:45

Hi Jasper ..... I want to lose 45lbs in total (!!!) - just over 3 stone. I've lost 17lbs so far in 5 weeks - I am keeping everything crossed that I continue to lose at this rate but need to be realistic. However, I think it's not unreasonable to hope that I'll have done it by Xmas.

Like you, I did Points last year, starting 3 months after my daughter was born. I lost 27lbs then in 3.5 months, but I found it very very hard even with the extra points allowed for breastfeeding. I then went through an absolute load of hassle buying & selling and I'm afraid I gave up. In some respects, of course points is great in that you can "eat what you want" ..... but somehow I always felt a bit cheated by that claim, as what I wanted to eat was chocolate, cheese, creamy sauces, pizza etc., and to do this on points you have to be very disciplined with portion sizes.

I actually prefer NC, because I don't have to weigh, measure or record anything, but I do have these "extra" 21 points a week which I've found I don't need to spend, but instead use at the weekend for a decent helping of chocolate. That method works so much better for me personally than trying to meet my chocolate cravings with a "fun" size bar that's really no fun at all ! Now, I've been looking forward to a Crunchie (3.5 points) on Friday & Saturday and obviously still have 14 points left. These come in handy if you're eating out (though found it easy to stick to NC entirely in the Chinese) or, for some extra chocolate, like some good quality Lindt or Green & Blacks !

Somehow, this time round, I feel so much more inspired and far less resentful at watching what I eat. Stupid I know - 'cos I think suceeding in any diet is all in the mind, but fingers crossed, this time I will do it. I do not want to be fat and 40 !

catsmother · 24/08/2005 22:47

Gosh Ark - now that must be awfully difficult if eating out is part of your job. Guess it must be even worse if you have little input into where you eat ?

If you can choose, try to entertain in Italian or Chinese restaurants as these fit in with NC best.

jasper · 24/08/2005 22:55

Thank you catsmother, you are an inspiration. I wish I could drum up the motivation. That's the real killer.

I too started when my baby was three months old -used to breastfeed him at the metings. Had 28 points a day back then.
I did well on it for a few months till I hit my target but found it really hard to maintain and the weight just crept slowly up ( I never stopped going to the classes ).

I Liked points for a while but at the end thought it was kind of puting the cart before the horse. I would obsess about how many points I had left and what I was "allowed". This did nothing to help my minor eating disorder (IE i am a greedy pig!)
Know what you mean about fun size bars - what an oxymoron.

fifilala · 25/08/2005 08:04

lost just 1/2 a lb this week (boo hoo)- discussed about switching to points rather than n/c but think i should just stay as I am (total loss 9.5lbs in 7 weeks). Here goes another week of fruit and veg. Just found out that my ds's "Iced Gems" biscuits are only 1.5 points for a bag - could these become part of my weekly 21points??????
Do not think I am going to make my 1 stone by holiday in 2 weeks.

OP posts:
ark · 25/08/2005 10:01

fifila - well done all in the right direction! Still two weeks to go! Remember you are slimmer than when you started so its all good.

Now Catsmother that is v interesting re italian and chinese - what would be the type of mile I would go for? Amusingly on points have been avoiding those and going for the steak and salad options a lot! But as I say hopefully in a few weeks these lunch and dinner style meetings will bve coming to a slightly mor manageable level - more proper meetings! But spill the beans on your eating out know how! I am not as knowledgeable as you all coz I don't have a meeting to go to just the weigh in as is a during work club - so I need all the help i can get!

ark · 25/08/2005 10:01

mile oops meal I mean

Brighteyes · 25/08/2005 10:20

ark, the points I listed for linny were based on an average of 18 points a day. You would need to amend accordingly.

ark · 25/08/2005 10:31

i'm on 18 too so thats okay for me as well thanks

catsmother · 25/08/2005 20:15

Hi again Ark ..... in an Italian, you can have pasta with meat/tomato/vegetable based sauces, but no creamy sauces or pesto (with its cheese, pinenuts & olive oil). Okay - I expect their version of spag. bol. sauce probably isn't totally NC as they'll no doubt have used olive oil and maybe not very lean mince either, but I think you can "ignore" those little details so long as you don't eat there every day ..... or, to be on the safe side, deduct a couple of points from your extra 21. You can also have vegetable based soup, "proscuito e melone" for starters, or, like you say, meat/fish and new potatoes (not fried).
In the Chinese, I work on the principle that steamed rice is fine, and that many chinese sauces are very low in fat - in particular, black bean, but again, no dishes in batter, sweet sauces like lemon or orange, or those containing nuts. In the supermarket, most stir-fry chinese sauces have practically no fat at all ... so figure the same for eating out. Again, chances are that a bit of fat will have been used in the stir-frying but you can make similar allowances as before. The clear chinese soups like Hot & Sour or Chicken & Mushroom are okay on NC too.

TBH, I think you can get too obsessive about sauces/relishes/ketchups. On the WW site, there are often questions on the forums about how many points a tablespoon of this that or the other has. I just think, well, so long as it's low in fat - many relishes & pickles are - then I'm not going to worry about it. I figure that the amount of walking I'm trying to get in (when it's not raining) more than covers me for a spoon of BBQ sauce or a dollop of piccalilli a few times a week. I never "count" the points earned by walking but at the back of my mind feel secure that they take care of those kinds of tiny little extras, without having to dip into the 21 that I save for my weekend chocolate pig-out !

Being on NC, the last thing I want to do is get back into writing everything down and working out points values for every last tiny bit of food.

hi everyone..
gained 0.5 lb this week and am so pee'd off i could eat the contents of my entire fridge and cupboards!!! thing is i've been extremely good this week.. stuck to 18 pts a day as well as walking 3.5 miles a day and not using the points i earned from the walks..
please motivate me to stay on track..
i know this is the difficult stage now, the last half stone or so and i know i should expect weeks like this but it's really really annoyed me..
up to now i've not walked or excercised much and every week id have lost at least 1 lb.. and i always had bad weekends food wise and still managed to lose..
then begs the question. am i not eating enough points? is 18 to little? book tells me 21 so why does leader tell me to stick to 18?
am so confused by that..

Dior.. please enlighten me? how many points should i be on? im 5'4.. 10st 5.5 lbs.. aged 32 my job involves occasionally sitting but mainly standing.. and i want to lose weight.. that adds up to 21 pts in ww bible doesnt it?

hope you'll all forgive me for rant but i needed to get it all off my chest!

catsmother · 26/08/2005 22:18

Dior - I understand what you mean, and will start to count properly if and when I slow down or don't lose at all. The only thing I write down now is my extra 21 points. Right now, I'm walking -quite fast & with pushchair - for at least an hour, at least 5 times a week. So think that probably does cover me for the odd bit of sauce/relish - low fat of course. However, I do understand also that I run the risk of my metabolism slowing if I don't eat enough for the level of exercise I'm doing - TBH, don't think that's the case at least not yet ..... I have been eating till I'm full, and haven't suffered any of the headaches I usually get if I'm hungry. In fact, the healthy food approach of NC has meant my headaches have reduced right down which is a great added bonus as I used to get them frequently.

With Chinese, I've been working on the principle that the basic ingredients - meat/fish & veg are allowed on NC. Plus of course a bit of low fat sauce, which, as I said, if eaten occasionally will be covered by my walking points or can be taken from the 21. The clear soups are basically stock - which I think is allowed on NC (?) + bits and bobs which are okay on the plan.

All my enthusiasm will probably come and bite me on the bum but, fingers crossed, so far it seems to be working very well indeed for me.

Dior, sensible advice about eating all your points, can't think of a better way to wreck your metabolisma nd make it harder to lose (and easier to gain) than by starving yourself / not eating your bonus points. And you'll get ill too (trust me on that one!).

I went to my first WW meeting for a fortnight on Tuesday, was away on holiday and eating chips etc like mad (we were camping with a primus and disposable barbecue, limited options). Lost 2.5 over the fortnight tho!! , must be all that activity.

I count everything, TBH. If I don't know, i round it up higher.

Which reminds me, does anyone know points value of fruit and fibre, and Doritos creamy garlic dip? I only had 1/2 a dessert spoon, but will still count it.
