Have just bought the book & CD after two recommendations. Anyone following his rules ? Is it working ?

I have been doing this since Tuesday and cos i'm a serial weigher - I have weighed myself everyday (sorry Paul!). In five days, I have lost 5lbs!

I haven't been good - infact quite bad with my eating habits - just whatever I fancy...including profiteroles, yummy!

I feel very liberated and am trying very hard NOT to think of food every minute (esp chocolate), but am very impressed how I am listening to my body and recognising the full feeling, not just continuing to eat to the very end of the packet/box etc.

The only thing that is slightly disturbing is that I went for a number 2 about 8 or 9 times yesterday and the day before that. Has anyone else had this?

MarmaladeSun · 15/05/2005 19:00

Hi. Have just read this thread with interest. I am a qualified hypnotherapist/psychoanalyst and I would just like to comment on one of the points raised...don't worry if you fall asleep whilst listening to the CD...even though your conscious mind has 'switched off' your subnconscious mind is still absorbing every thing that the CD is telling you. It will still work. Good luck everyone.

Seabird · 02/07/2005 21:11

Hi I read the book on Weds and have been listening to the CD. Feels like it's working. Last night I had one of those weird dreams someone mentioned (sort of a thin me floating around ethereally!)

I haven't dieted since I left school - I don't like the idea of obsessing about food - but I like the idea of hastening the departure of the pounds I put on after having my 2 babies so close together (19mo dd & 3mo ds).

I'm v susceptible to brainwashing - sorry, hypnosis - I used it for childbirth and giving up smoking so I'm optimistic about this approach.

And I looove listening to the CD - I put it on when ds and dd are having their lunchtime naps and it's absolutely blissful getting that relaxed so quickly

I'd be really interested to hear everyone's progress - is anyone still doing it, and how is it going?

(If noone replies I'll just have to start a new thread for people in the first flush of enthusiasm )

Katya · 02/07/2005 23:14

hello all

really pleased to find this thread as have been listening to the CD. How often do other people listen to it?

I'm part way through my weight loss journey. I've lost 4.5 stones and am very stuck, and hoping that P McK can help . In fact I had lost 5 stones, but 8 lbs have crept back on . My BMI is currently 32, so could do with getting into the merely overweight zone (under 30), and take it from there - if I ever get there !

I don't believe in diets either, and have lost the weight thus far by being sensible, not counting or depriving. Well mostly. I tried ww for a while but it did my head 'in ! Not sure which was worse, the obsessive counting or the gross merchandising.

a friend sent me the book and CD because she just couldn't cope with Paul McK's voice.

I found the book + CD compelling, and it does seem to relax and knock me out.

For a few days I was much more attentive to hunger levels etc, but then things went a bit AWOL. Suppose it doesn't help that I am in middle of long and stressful house move...and started eating just anything in large quantities and not caring if I was hungry.

anyway I am giving it another go as don't like feeling bloated.

I don't feel confident about doing it totally as per instructions, as find it impossible to distinguish between sugar cravings and 'I could just francy XXX' and real hunger. and was too cowardly to do the tapping /revolting visualisation.

Sugar and refined whites do bad things to me, have to make sensible GI aware choices so blood sugar doesn't roller coaster and to keep candida at bay.

sorry for long essay !

Seabird · 03/07/2005 21:49

Wow Katya - 4.5 stone! That's amazing. When did you start?

At the moment I'm listening to the CD every day but I've only had it since Wednesday so it's still a novelty. How about you?

Today I recorded it onto cassette so I could erase the bit about waking up and listen to it before I go to sleep. Am hoping this doesn't mean I spend the night in a hypnotic trance . But I figure if I tell my subconscious that at the end of the CD I'll fall into a nice refreshing sleep it should be ok

Katya · 04/07/2005 10:01

Hi Seabird

brilliant idea about making your own editted tape without the waking up bit. Does your cassette player switch off automatically when get to end of the tape?

I listened to Paul McKenna cd in bed last night, and got so relaxed must've fallen asleep straight away. Woke up to switch it off and take headphones off - or so I thought. Next thing woke in the middle of the night to the sound of the radio coming through the headphones on the floor ! I'd just switched the CD player on to radio and it was going on all night !

I've been on this weightloss jouney for some time now. Started 3 years ago, when was dx with wheat allergy and told to watch blood sugar and the weight came off without actively dieting. But have been drifting around the same weight for last year.

The actual weightloss periods were pretty rapid, it's the off-track times in between that add up !

sounds like you are really good at visualising yourself thinner ! I find that difficult as have been overweight/obese for long time. I think back to when I was slimmer about 15 years ago...but not sure this is right thing to do as only want to lose weight, not expect to turn back time.

Seabird · 04/07/2005 21:05

lol re turning back time! I've put a pre-children photo of me in a bikini on the fridge as inspiration. My face is quite far away in it so I was pleased this morning when 19m dd pointed to it and said "Mummy!"

At the mo dh stays up to do ds's late feed so I get to play the tape/CD without headphones and then he can switch it off so the lights don't keep us awake all night. I used to do my hypnobirthing one through headphones though and often ended up in a tangle .

Paul McK was on Radio 2 this afternoon plugging his new show (tonight at 9pm on Sky1). Apparently that tapping thing is extremely effective for dealing with trauma as well as compulsion and is used extensively to treat trauma victims in Kosovo! I must admit I haven't tried it. I think you'd have to record it wouldn't you? It's a bit complicated .

I've only been doing it 5 days so ages before I'm allowed to weigh myself - it's hard!

lilaclotus · 04/07/2005 21:08

sorry to just burst into your conversation, but paul mckenna is on sky one atm

Seabird · 04/07/2005 21:13

thanks lilaclotus, I'm watching it tomorrow as I have to go to bed now in preparation for ds's possible middle-of-night feeds!

Seabird · 11/07/2005 20:59

Hi Katya are you still "doing" Paul McK?

I must admit I'm finding it difficult with 2 babies to look after to have time to listen to my appetite never mind savour each mouthful of food. On the plus side I'm not eating much, on the downside I'm often weak with hunger after rushing around after ds & dd on an empty stomach by which time I'm past it!

I can finally weigh myself on Weds so I can see if it's doing the trick!

Seabird · 17/07/2005 20:59

Well not sure if anyone else out there is still doing this but thought I'd update anyway!

Results after 1st two weeks were fab - I'd lost 6lb! Which has spurred me on

Be lovely to hear from anyone else...

DanielleC · 18/07/2005 11:01

I did this for a couple of days and then kinda lost interest. Does it work? Is it worth perservering with? I'd love to hear from people who are finding success with it!

x

Katya · 21/07/2005 20:29

congrats on the 6lbs loss Seabird ! WOW well done !

bit worried to hear you've been feeling weak with hunger. how about power snacks such as protein on oatcake?

Sorry for late reply, yes I am still listening to Paul McKenna tape as and when I can make time. Time is in short supply as we're moving house in 10 days time so it's been panic stations, lots to organinse and packing.

I've lost 4.4lbs in last 2 weeks and pleased with that. Also I don't feel stressed out by counting calories, points or any other diet obsession - cos I'm not doing it, just eating sensibly.

Can't say I savour every mouthful, or eat mindfully and slowly, but do feel more in tune with what food my body needs.

hope it's going well for you!

Katya · 21/07/2005 20:35

Hi Dannille C

yes do persevere !

the Paul McKenna is so sensible, and can be combined with other common-sense approaches. I've learnt a lot from the GI, and now have less dramatic blood sugar ups and downs. I don't bother counting the GI just take on board the general principles and listen to Paul McK.

hope you can get back into the swing of it, really do think his method is a whole lifestyle thing which as we all know the best way to keep the weight off forever.

Seabird · 21/07/2005 21:28

I totally agree with you Katya, it's just a common sense way of eating for life isn't it? No obsessing about calories or food combining or what you can and can't eat Definitely worth giving a go, DanielleC!

That's great about your continuing steady weight loss katya. I don't think I'm going to have lost as much after this next 2 week period, but that's fine. I'm feeling better than before, I think the problem was I was waiting til I was really hungry to eat but being so busy with the children meant I wasn't then able to eat immediately. Now I'm making sure I snack on something I fancy before I get TOO hungry, which means I'm eating little and often. Fingers crossed I'll still have lost something next week! (I know I shouldn't be that interested in what I weigh but it does help keep motivated doesn't it )

Seabird · 28/07/2005 20:44

Well I'd lost a rather unspectacular 3lb this fortnight, but I suppose the trend is good. I wasn't surprised as I'd had lots of PMT cravings but I'm feeling more normal now so hopefully I'll eat according to my appetite again.

How's it going for you Katya?

DanielleC, did you decide to give it a go?

DanielleC · 29/07/2005 08:56

hey guys
well unfortunately for me I am rubbish and undisciplined and seeing as I have over 3 stone to lose I'm joining lighterlife tonight. I've got my appointment for tonight and hopefully this will be the one to work! Thanks for everyone's continuing support! Hope it's all continuing to go well for you guys!

Katya · 29/07/2005 17:48

well done on another 3lbs off Seabird, especailly as it's blooming difficult to lose abything when PMT cravings kick in.

I've lost another 0.8lbs this week. I'm pleased as am under enormous stress - we're moving house on Tuesday.

My running total for 3 weeks back on track ( Thanks Paul ) is 5.2lbs off.

Katya · 30/07/2005 19:42

I'm still listening to him, and actually finding it helpful.

The more I listen the more I either switch off totally or just drift in and out rather than actively listen or notice his speech mannerisms.

Some strange but good things are happening. A couple of times I've decided not to eat all the food portion - unheard of ! I've been leaving some of my porridge more days than not, and noticed that I'd had enough after eating 3/4 of an apple today. I still ate it not much later, but hey that's better than eating 2?

Normally I'd just eat everything automatically, and if it's healthy stuff I'd think to myself, doesn't matter if I eat loads.

Rather than external portion control, I think this may be the beginnings of learning to moderate food consumption to my food requirements !

The CD isn't just about weight loss, but also about self esteem. Very different to the hidden rules of dieting 'I am fat therefore I am bad and must punish myself by cutting out on reward food'.

Seabird · 31/07/2005 21:00

Hi Katya glad to hear this is still working for you. I know what you mean about finding yourself being more aware of what you're eating. Leaving quarter of an apple would never occur to me either! How did your move go?

I lent my CD to my mum so haven't been able to listen for a while, but I have been listening to his "Change Your Life in 7 Days" CD which has a similar self-esteem boosting effect. (I wasn't sure about that one because I actually quite like my life but it helps keep you feeling really positive etc.)

That same thing happens to me with the CD. I listened to it at lunchtime today and felt like I fell asleep through most of it but "woke" exactly when he said to.

Good luck with lighterlife, Danielle. Hope it works for you. If you ever do decide to give Paul McKenna a go don't worry about not having any self-discipline, he makes a big deal about how willpower has nothing to do with it and I think it's true

Elza · 06/08/2005 10:26

Hi, I ordered my copy this week and should receive it no later than Wednesday. How are you all doing?
I actually read about Paul McKenna on the WW board. Have been a member on and off for 8 years now. It does work, but I am so tired of always having to add up points.
Decided to give the CD a go. Maybe now I will be free from all my food hangups for the first time in 20 years. Have been feeling guilty about what I put in my mouth since I was 15!!
I want to loose 14 pounds. Please let's keep motivating each other.

Regards
Elza

Seabird · 06/08/2005 14:16

Hi Elza Welcome on board It really is a great way of eating and so much easier than all that guilt and point/calorie counting, as you say. I weigh again next Weds (he encourages you not to weigh at all but if you have to, do it no more than once a fortnight). Don't think I'll have lost much but even a little would be good as this really does feel like a long term way of eating which feels so natural now.

Anyway, Good luck!

How's it going for you Katya? Are you settled into your new home?

TwoIfBySea · 07/08/2005 23:02

Okay, this is encouraging to hear other people's stories. I bought this quite recently and have been working up the courage to start it.

I do need to loose quite a lot, I know how to do it but can't stop the obsession with eating all the time and have become quite gross (in every sense!) It has gotten to the point that I don't like people seeing me with dst as they would be known as the ones with the tubby mum!

I did Scottish Slimmers but as has been said, all that counting and monitoring everything I ate was becoming a bore. Also, lets face it, diet food isn't very healthy as the fat is replaced with something chemically (yes, that is the technical term.) I quit because I knew it was my mindset that needed changed and that wasn't helping at all.

Here goes then!

Seabird · 09/08/2005 21:40

Good luck TwoifBySea! Look forward to hearing how you find your new non-chemically way of eating.

I'm "allowed" to weigh myself again tomorrow. Fingers crossed but I'm quite liking my shape at the moment so even if it's only half a pound I think I'll be happy.

I lent my mum the book. She hasn't listened to the CD yet but even though she cheated and weighed herself early (& hasn't lost anything after 4 days) she has found she doesn't want to drink alcohol any more! This is compared with her usual bottle of cava every other night at least, which is most of the reason she put weight on in the first place. She reckons she has inadvertently reprogrammed herself teetotal. Glad this hasn't happened to me!
