of course regular gym once a week and free weights and yoga at home and walking and cycling and lots of water and just not snacking on wheat based things

I lost 2st doing the low carb thingy but have gained it all back since re-introducing potatoes, bread etc
That way of eating really seems to agree with me as I feel more alert and energised when following it;the minute I eat processed carbs I fart like a demon blow up like the michelin man.

well done on the weight loss, but for anyone else about to embark, be bloody careful about the supplements she recommends: I got a kidney stone after 3 weeks on the diet, and the 12lb I lost did not make up for the pain - which the surgeon said was probably attributable to the combination of high protein and excessive supplements.

wtf did you get kidney stones you poor thing. I didn't take the silly supplements, oh good lord no, just a multivitamin n the first month.
And I can't see bread rice and potatoes ever being a part of my diet more than twice a month, in fact I haven't touched or missed bread in all that time.

And on closer calculation I think it is actually only 20lbs or 1st 6lbs

I never bothered with the mega bucks supplements either and never had any problems - it is vital that you drink loads of water though.
Bread and rice I can live without; potatoes and noodles are my downfall.

Can I just be the voice of dissent here? I've tried IPD and been a regular on the messageboards on Pig2Twig...and yes, yes, a lot of people lose weight on it. But it is not healthy to stay on P1 for so long, people start to lose their hair and develop kidney stones etc. And a lot of people seem unhappy and are constantly losing and gaining the same few lbs and falling off the wagon all the time.

And how come Bryan Appleyard now looks definitely slim in his byline photo (he followed a low carb regimen which allowed fruit and all veg, except maybe potatoes) but sorry, IK still looks very well rounded, and did on the Richard and Judy and American TV appearances too. Nothing wrong with that of course, unless you're making money out of your "dramatic weight loss". I'm being polite in case I get sued for defamation or something, but you get my drift. I feel like screeching "But the emperor isn't wearing any clothes!". I'd take Bryan Appleyard's dietary advice over IPD any day. But then I'm not an IK fan, so maybe its to do with that...

Essentially I do believe that a relatively low carb way of eating is natural and healthy, but in that vein I can't help feeling that the IPD book is money for old rope. Perhaps useful to people who are new to low carbing (though it gives no scientific explanations) or haven't read Gillian Riley's excellent book on overcoming addictive eating (which makes the IPDs paltry few pages look, well, pants).

But each to their own, I do concede.

I'm going back to my IPD/WW hybrid diet again (yes, it can work) - I lost over a stone but started working and fell into the wine/pasta/toast cycle which was disastrous. I bought the mega bucks supplements - waste of money imo, you can do it without all that. I too used to be a regular on pig2twig and I do think IK still looks quite rounded but then again I'm not planning on being super skinny either.

IK admits herself in the book that it is essentially a rehash of Atkins. I've absolutely no problems with that. She, Neris and Bee basically make the whole thing more up-to-date and accessible.

Once you understand the principles behind this way of eating you can tweak it here and there and get your vitamins etc from the foods you do eat. I tend to eat more, and more varied veg when I eat this way.

If you ditch sugar and carb rich food you will lose weight. Even the Cambridge Diet works on these principles.

Oggs, everything you're saying...yes I know. But I still don't like it, still think it is money for old rope, don't really agree it is more accessible, think there are a few inaccuracies and contradictions in the book etc. As you say, she says herself it is a rehash of other low carb diets, having cherry picked and used what worked for them. As I said, if you like India Knight, then you're going to like the IPD book. I find her a bit patronising, and surfing the wave of whatever is popular (Chicklit novel? Book about affluent shopping while we're riding the crest of consumerism? Book about the new thrift now it's trendy and everyone is supposed to be doing it? etc etc).

As, I said, this is probably why I have ishoos about IPD. Low carb in and of itself is fine. Also the way the diet is set up, as far as I can see not many people can actually follow it, and end up bingeing or gaining weight as they reintroduce the oats etc week by week. Personally I think it that although a lot is spoken about "headstuff" a lot of people don't deal with their addictions because as soon as they eat a peach, they fall off the wagon.

But anyway suzywong if you are THAT desperate for free cheese, I'll happily send you a round of stinking bishop, which should be nicely ripened by the time it arrives half way around the world...

I've just looked up Brian Appleyard's article on his weight loss and agree that it seems a healthier version in that it allows fruit.
I usually crave fruit when I'm low carbing.

StillNameChanged (do I know you?), which of Gillian Riley's books do you recommend? She's done quite a few.
I definately have a problem with addictive/emotional eating and need to address this I think, rather than losing and gaining continually.

Yeah Oggs, our paths have crossed on a low carb thread. Not really sure why I name changed. Maybe I was afraid of getting flamed for expressing my anti IK sentiment? Anyway, the best Gillian Riley book IMHO is Eating Less: Say Goodbye to Overeating.
