Had no luck with posting this in chat! Must be a skinny bunch in there. Seriously need to shed some weight. After lots of failed attempts over the past few years I'm determined to stick to a long-term plan, reducing calorie intake by a small amount and doing more exercise.

My plan is this - I'm reducing my calorie intake to 1600 per day (to maintain weight I should have 2100) and aim to do a 20 min brisk walk 3 times a week, plus 20-30 mins aerobic exercise 3 times a week (fitness video or Wii fit or swimming).

If anyone is interested in joining in, with maybe a weekly weigh-in then I'd be very glad of the company and support!

Bought some body fat measuring scales yesterday and my body fat percentage is almost 39% which I don't think is good somehow.

Hi, surprise, I'd be happy to join in if you'll have me.

I've got a bit of weight to lose, mostly on my flobbly belly which hasn't recovered from two kids with close age gap; and I would really love to get fitter.

I need to reduce the quantity of food I eat; it's all home-cooked and reasonably healthy, but I give myself too much. And I snack waaay too much. I've never specifically calorie counted before, and don't know how to go about it for home-cooked food (so no labels to read). Any tips?

For exercise, dh and I have been trying to get 3 runs in a week. I'm not a natural runner, but we've been going for 7 weeks now and it's going ok. I usually run for about 1/2 hour, but it's difficult as I can only go when dh is home to look after the kids, but his hours are very unpredictable, so it's not always possible. I've been twice so far this week, and need to try and get again today (though I have a blister on the sole of my foot, so will have to see how that feels). What exercise video(s) are you going to follow? I would be interested if you had any recommendations. Also, am interested in how you find the wii-fit. We have a wii, and I use the sports game. Is the wii-fit a lot better? Anything I can do at home is a bonus, from the childcare pov.

A bit of mutual support would be great!

Romy7 · 17/08/2008 14:25

OK - me too.

Posted about a month ago and then had big blood pressure scare and was banned from driving/ exercise, so i couldn't start. all sorted now (ish), so i can exercise etc.

i am now the proud owner of 2 Davina dvds (still wrapped) which someone on here recommended, and a new set of body fat scales (unwrapped and reading 36%) and my bmi is almost 27. i'm not vast, but i do need to lose about a stone and a half to be back to normal bmi...
...and fit into my clothes.

similar to 2Happy - all home-cooked but quantity is an issue - and never counted cals before - would just reducing portion sizes and eliminating snacks (with a glass of water instead?) not be exact enough?

i would love to start running again - used to run a lot - but all pre-kids... think i need to get my confidence up a bit before i venture into trainers outdoors...

OneBoyOneGirl · 17/08/2008 16:32

Oooo, Me too please!

I also posted a while ago desperate to do something about my weight but had alot happening so was put on the back burner so im ready now again and raring to go!

I have bought two excercise DVDs and have ordered a Wii and the Wii fit which should be here in a week.

I am about 3 stone overweight and the reason is i eat way to much and don't get off my backside enough! There, i said it!

I have DD 2.6 and DS 1 and since DS has been born i tend to stay in the house more as such a rigmarol sp? going out, but now he's older i really need a kick to get myself motivated again!

Really unsure what a 'normal' sized portion looks like these days so calorie counting ane weighing really has to be the way forward fo me i think.

Love the idea of weekly weigh in and would really appeciate the support and advice

MABS · 17/08/2008 16:37

me too, what do i need to do? is it ok that i prob only need to lose a stone?

needstodiet · 17/08/2008 17:37

I'd love to join too pls.

Been wanting to do it for a while but noone to do it with and i'm no use at sticking to things if I dont have someone to go along with.

I'd prefer to weigh myself on a 2 or 3 weekly basis if ok?

needstodiet · 17/08/2008 17:42

I'm aiming for 3stone for starters.

Guilty of snacking so i'll put a stop to that or maybe 1 treat per day instead of all the usual junk.

Did it years ago wheras I would be really really good all week then treat myself to a curry or something else one day at the weekend. Also joined an aerobics class once a wk and swimming too. Lost 2 and a half stone in 3 months.

oiwhatsoccurring · 17/08/2008 17:51

Surprise have you joined weightlossresource.co.uk Soounds just like there diet and I started with them on Friday, has been very good so far.

Mabs you don't need to lose weight, you have a gorgeous body

Romy7 · 17/08/2008 19:36

Just read the title again.
not starting until tomorrow - does that mean we need to weigh/ check in on a monday?
(and does that mean i can eat loads tonight with no falling off wagon involved...?)
can do that exercise regime - and have worked out that if i walk the dogs in my trainers, i might be tempted to jog once i get in the woods where no-one can see! fat lab might lose weight too!
thinking 3 days walking, 2 days davina (!) and 1 swimming a week (not nec in that order)
too tight to get a wii fit.
no snacking.
will weigh pasta/ rice/ couscous etc but not count cals unless that doesn't seem to be working after a couple of weeks...
see ya tomorrow!
(off to 'clear out' the chocolate)

2Happy · 17/08/2008 20:18

So is Davina good, then? Should I order me a copy??
Are we going to do a start-off weigh-in tomorrow

tibni · 17/08/2008 20:18

I would love to join too please.

Just back from a weeks holiday and feeling really bloated and unhealthy. Having support from others would really help.

I have been a member at the gym for 2 years now - go at least 3 times a week but am bigger than I have ever been so need to get my eating under control. Need about a stone maybe stone and a half off.

I have promised trainer at gym I will see him for a new programme after school holidays and I have decided to make diet changes now.

OneBoyOneGirl · 17/08/2008 20:22

2Happy, glad im not the only one to do that!

I will reluctantly weigh in stones to post my start off weight tomorrow

  • have stolen the envy face for a so scared i feel sick face!
SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 17/08/2008 20:23

needstodiet · 17/08/2008 20:56

So is everyone doing the weigh in/reveal all tomorrow night then? I wont get chance to be on computer till evening so....

Good luck to everyone. I'm looking forward to the NEW ME

2Happy · 18/08/2008 07:24

Ok here goes:

This morning I weigh 10st 3.5
And I measured my waist as I hope I will be putting muscle on by exercising so the weight may not shift hugely (though I would very much like to be considerably nearer 9 stone than 10!!!); it's also the bit of me I hate the most ATM. It was 36.5 inches.

Have been looking on old MN threads and figure Davina exercise DVDs seem to get the thumbs up, so may order one off amazon.

From today I will not be sneaking into the potty-training-chocolate-bribery stash. I will instead do as Romy7 suggests and have a glass of water instead.

Incidently, where's surprise, she started the thread, I hope she comes back to find all the people she's motivated

tibni · 18/08/2008 07:45

I'm here too . I have started a little book that i'm going to use as a diary - food, exercise type of thing. I find actually writing things down really helps.

I have never actually calorie counted; does anyone know of any good sites with calororie lists?

I think my poor eating tends to be around unrefined carbs - white bread in excess and not enough protein (i'm veggie).

oiwhatsoccurring · 18/08/2008 07:48

For a good calories counting site go here

They do a 24hr free trial and then it's £9.95 a month. I have found it excellent.

tibni · 18/08/2008 07:52

Thanks .

Just dug out tape measure following 2Happy idea - certainly helped with the motivation

LadyMuck · 18/08/2008 07:59

For websites can I also recommend Foodfocus. It has a lot of calorie info on British foods, as well as calculating the calorific burn of various exercises, and its free!

2Happy · 18/08/2008 08:01

Have a look at this website also (I've been surfing sites for the last half hour...!) It will calculate your body size (including the dreaded hips/waist measurement), your calorie intake, advise you on how you can alter your intake.... Mind you, I put in what i ate yesterday and it told me I should be eating more fat (that's only because they don't have the option of putting in yorkshire puddings )

MABS · 18/08/2008 08:01

wil weigh myself later at gym and post. sweet of you oiwhatsoccurin but i am heavier than i wanna be at the mo

medogsarebarking · 18/08/2008 08:02

Hi all, is it too late for me to join too?

I need to lose at least 2 and a half stone. I've already lost quite a bit but I'm stuck.

Would love some support/bum-kicking..

medogsarebarking · 18/08/2008 08:04

oiwhatsoccuring - I used weightlossresources and lost quite a bit of weight, it's a really useful site I think..I'm now using www.nutracheck.com as it has a 5-a-day and water intake meter.

tibni · 18/08/2008 08:09

Just registered with Foodfocus, looks the type of thing that will really help me. I'm actually because I am "just" within the healthy BMI - wasn't expecting that.

2Happy · 18/08/2008 08:12

Ooh LadyMuck, I like that site (and not only because it says my BMI is healthy..!) Have registered, so can now do the whole calorie counting thing.

Does anyone know if, on calorie counting sites, when you put in a bowl of cereal, does it automatically include the milk??

Welcome medogsarebarking

littlemisss · 18/08/2008 08:50

Yes please. Need to lose a stone. I'm good at the exercise side of things as I run most days but I just love chocolate and biscuits.
