PC stop putting so much store in individual weighings. What you are actually trying to do is lose fat, and weight is just an indicator of how much fat you've lost. But lots of other things can affect your weight too, including how straight you are standing on the scales.

I have to admit that I weight myself a lot too, at least a couple of times a day, but the only weights that I pay attention to are new lows. I don't really worry too much what the scales say (and they do move around a lot) so long as once or twice a week they drop to lower than they have been before and that's the one that I count as 'my weight'. I never use different scales if I can help it because that just confuses matters. Using kg has helped me a lot because I'm less clear about how much I actually weigh (compared to when I was a teenager for eg) so it's really just watching numbers which less emotional involvement.

bran · 18/08/2008 14:57

You have done really well, don't you dare start beating yourself up now. [kind but stern emoticon]

(Look at me. Still a newbie on this thread and already kicking arse like a good 'un.)

hi everyone!

I DID IT!!!!!! I EXERCISED TODAY!!!!

I did just under 40 minutes of step aerobics this morning and then DD woke up from her nap so i had to stop, which was rather annoying as i wanted to do some abs and free weights on my arms/shoulders too. Still, 40 minutes is better than nothing!!

bran · 18/08/2008 22:42

40 mins is great RGP, was that to a DVD? I bought myself a new cardio Callanetics DVD about a month ago and I haven't even taken the cellophane off yet.

I did at least do an hour with my trainer today after nearly two weeks of doing bugger all (a week of which I was also being over-fed on cheese, pate etc at my parents' house). It bloody well hurt, so I suppose it must have done some good. It's mostly my own fault as I kept saying to myself that I should at least do squats and standing push-ups because they are the things that hurt the most when I haven't done anything for a while, but of course I didn't do them so I suffered today. My trainer laughed, he enjoys causing pain. He used to be a policeman but I think they took all the fun out of it for him when he couldn't beat up the suspects anymore.

bran · 18/08/2008 22:44

I don't think that the GI diet is all that similar to low-carb really. I certainly eat quite a lot of carbohydrate with every meal, but it's all slow-release, minimally-processed carb. So brown basmati rice, wholemeal pasta/bread, dark rye Ryevita (I love the taste of it). I also have lots of veg, especially green leafy veg, to give roughage and fill me up. I do eat meat and cheese etc but not a huge amount, I do have lots of pulses though as I enjoy them, especially Indian style.

(I'm getting a little annoyed at having to do any post over two paragraphs in two goes. Does this happen to everyone else or is it just me?)

PinkChick · 19/08/2008 12:28

im fed up and have just bought a big peice of cake!

..........i had 2 small bites, felt sick and left it!...am so SICK of the scales NOT budging ..have been absolutely angelic all last week and weekend

OP posts:
bran · 19/08/2008 18:42

We've all been there with the cake PC. There's one day every month that is sugar-craving day for me, a lapse isn't a failure it's just a lapse.

And what did I tell you about the scales?

Did you a) feed the cake to some unsuspecting member of your family or b) put it in the bin with washing up liquid on it? (I my case it would definitely be c) finish it off. )

PinkChick · 19/08/2008 20:03

Hiya Bran..i only got weighed this mornin, last time i got weighed was sunday, so better than i used to be..although my elderly next door neighbour might get a shock sson as i stand in undies in kitchen now as abthroom floor lie's to me!!!!

no dd had to go to docs, prescription wouldnt be ready for an hour!, so we went to morrisons to get some bits and said id treat dd (she has chest infection), when we got in the cake that has been screaming at me for weeks now (obviously not the exact same piece, now that would NOT be appetising!) gave me a little wink, so dd got something called bumpy , lumpy toffe pie? and i got a slice of this (was like a cheese cake with something pinks veined through it??)..we sat down armed with spoons and i had two bites and passed it over to dd..she passed me hers and i took one spoon of that (sickly isnt in it!) and said she could have both!..even dd only had a little bit more..it wasnt that i was being good, i just felt so sickly eating it!

am thinking of doing something along lines of special k diet for few weeks as i havent shifted at all and its depressing me now..i must shift it, esp as i thought i was less at weekend

OP posts:
RGPargy · 19/08/2008 22:36

Bran - yeah it was to a video (yes, really, a VIDEO!) that i've had for YEARS! Quite old, but very effective! LOL @ your trainer laughing at your pain. How typical of them lol.

Sorry, i thought the GI was more similar to low carb than that. I obviously must have got confused. Never have the problem of not being able to post more than two paragraphs at a time! How come it happens to you?!!

Mmmmmm cake.........

If it's any consolation, i had TWO mini muffins at my friend's house today.

PinkChick · 20/08/2008 08:54

Morning, seems a bit quiet again in here? must be the holidays?

well am well and truely fed up, weight doesnt seem to be shifting anymore?, despite me eating MUCH better (Apart from that bit of cake yesterday), so am going ON mY OWN to water aerobics tonight..i know its not strenuous, but its something and i MUST do something before this level gets the better of me..wish me luck, last time i went it was full of skinnt minny's

Just whizzing by to say hi and I haven't given up (though not doing very well), just PC problems.
Hope you're all doing well.
I hope I'll be back soon.

Von73wirral · 20/08/2008 19:40

Hi all, I am new to this board and would love to join in with you all. I have around 5 stone or more to lose. I am mainly going by clothes size but any loss is a bonus.

Am doing WW and really trying hard but also finding it hard at times as I work full time and then come home to be a full time single mum to my kids.

I have so far in 3 weekls lost 4 lbs which is better than a gain and trying to go the gym 3 times a week.

RGPargy · 20/08/2008 20:50

Pink - good luck at aqua aerobics!

Ria - Hope you get the pc sorted out.

Von73 - hello and welcome! Well done on your 4lbs gone. As you say, it's better than a gain! I'm also doing WW and as much as i find it easy to follow, it's difficult to try and do family meals that fit in without going over your points, although i suppose the same can be said about any diet you are following really!

Weather is pants at the mo. Pouring with rain! Right, DD has been playing up tonight at bedtime so now that it sounds like she's DEFFO gone off to sleep, it's time to get out my nice Smirnoff Ice. 2.5 points worth of bliss!

Have a nice evening everyone!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/08/2008 20:55

Hello all had connection problems but all is well now.

I had a bad weekend and Monday as my Uncle was over from South Africa and was going to have a non alcohol week when I had guests phone up at 5 saying they were cancelling their 2 rooms tonight as it was against his principles to stay next to a military base (we live next to a very small one), I did lose the plot entirely and told him to F off, when he suggested that I should put this info on my website and no he wasn't going to pay for the rooms, so mortified by that and hoping he doesn't know about trip advisor. So have resorted to a bottle tonight.

Pinlk - try not to get downhearted, you do plateau sometimes and hope you enjoyed the aqua areobics.

RGPargy · 20/08/2008 21:22

Five - shame about the stupid guest!!! There's always one isn't there?! think you deserve the bottle!

PinkChick · 20/08/2008 21:27

I did buy a Rosemary Conley video during my charity shop splurge this afternoon. I t has a 5 minute section that "really works"

I have taken delivery of the second batch of clothes Dsis is too small for. But F* knows where she put these jeans before she lost the weight, I would have said (having "inside information" ie, I'm wearing them) that they would be a comfortable fit now instead of too bloody tight.

I am going away at the weekend and intend to enjoy myself. Might change myname back to Ma Larkin...

But it's not long til the kids are back at school, so two long walks with the buggy a day, more routine etc I have just watched Rory McGrath do the Knaresborough bed race and I want to be fit.

Hi to the new people and good luck.

bran · 20/08/2008 22:53

Hi Von73, welcome to the thread.

PC, FGMID is probably right, you might just be at a plateau at the moment? You've lost a really good amount up until now so you know that what you're doing works. Keep going through the slow patch and I'm sure the weight will start dropping off again.

I feel your suffering after exercise, I was with the trainer again today and I really wasn't up for it. If he hadn't been coming I would have been tempted to put a dvd on for ds and have tried to nap on the sofa. We did a new torso-twisting exercise today and the muscles over my ribcage keep twinging when I move.

bran · 20/08/2008 22:53

I'm looking forward to term starting again too Ria (two weeks tomorrow, I'm counting the days). I kid myself it's because I can do more exercise, it's 1.55 miles to ds's school and I always walk at least one way and often both (ie take him on the bus and walk home, then walk to pick him up and get bus home). I know suspect the real reason that I'm longing for him to go back to school is that I'm looking forward to having huge chunks of time without a small child whinging "I'm bored".

That's a pity about your last minute cancellation FGMID, do you at least get to keep his deposit?

PinkChick · 21/08/2008 08:53

Hi Girls..am not achy this morn, feel quite good actually!..was gunna start going the twice a week till hols but as its £4.05 a go, i cant really afford that as i need ot be buying /doing other things, so will just make sure im doing well and im sure it wills how a little difference!

dp took scales downstairs this morn to get weighed (concrete floor..doesnt move like abthroom flooring) and he's lost 4lb this week..he ahsnt got much to lose either so was chuffed for him..and i got on and was 3lb and a bit lighter than last official weigh at nurse, but it was thur and i normally get weighed tues, so extra day to show, but even so, am more positive now there IS a loss..ive been doing the cereal for brekky, normal lunch (jacket potato, ham, salad yesterday) and cereal for dinner, then after swimming last night had a banana and fat free yog..am really chuffed that am still in right frame of mind after 3 months!, ive never got this far before and glad you were all here to help and kick me up the ever decreasing butt!...off to park and my mums today so plenty of walking with little ones, then back to bake cakes, i may allow myself one (othewise ill want them all!) and have it with a cuppa tonight as going shopping straight from work....hope you all ahve fab day!

I have DS1 going up to Yr7 at secondary and DS2 starting reception. It will bevey quiet for me and DS3, especially as DH will either be back at work or at college.

RGPargy · 21/08/2008 13:17

Hi everyone

Just checking in for today. I'm at work today and tomorrow so will have ample time on my hands to post unless by some fluke i actually get some work to do!

DD has decided to go on milk strike again whilst she is at MILs. She's been a really good girl and having 5oz at a time with me during the week but she's back at MILs again today and has gone back to having a meagre 2oz. She even refused her toast too! I reckon her little teeth might be playing up. You never know, she might get her first tooth sometime soon!

Hope everyone is feeling good today.

Von73wirral · 21/08/2008 20:04
