Why has by bum crack got so wide after losing weight?!

Not something I want to admit to anyone IRL, so hoping some Mumsnetters can shed some light on why my bum crack has become so massive!! Over the last year I’ve lost 4 stone. My starting bmi was 29, it’s now 20. Obviously my body has changed a lot, mainly positively, but a not so positive change I’ve noticed recently is a much wider bum crack! When I’m playing sports and doing lots of running around I can literally feel the wind going up it, it feels like the left bum cheek isn’t even making contact with the right and they’re permanently separated by pretty sizeable gap. Before I lost weight there was no gap, both cheeks sat next to each other skin to skin. I feel like I have a baggy butt now and it’s a bit disconcerting. I’ve done strength training throughout my weightloss and have fairly firm glute muscles and no noticeably saggy skin, however my bum crack is noticeably wider even to look at. It’s making me self-conscious. Is a wide bum crack just part of being slim if you have a certain body shape? Is this normal and I’m just not used to it? I really don’t like the feeling of having a wide crack, this is going to sound weird I know, but it feels like the inside of my body isn’t protected enough or I could have an anal prolapse at any minute 😬

Dear lord. Just when I think I've read everything on MN.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 21/07/2026 22:13

I have a weird crease that gets sweaty under my bum now that I have lost stones. Bums are odd!

MyDarlingRose · 21/07/2026 22:16

Your buttock muscles have shrunk alongside the fat loss - this wasn’t the case before you lost weight as the weight loss itself has absorbed some of the muscle that was previously there. Try some weight workouts.

Additionally connective tissue and skin loosens during fat loss - you’ll likely find your arms and thighs feel more loose and jiggly too - this will retighten and firm up when weight stabilises and you might find your cheeks… reclose.

Jesus. I’ve been slim all my life and never had a wide bum crack.

This could be the weird thread I’ve ever read. Interesting in an odd way.

This thread has made me laugh. Sorry OP, but the wind whistling up your bum crack made me snort. 😂

Bum curtains?

Shloopie · 21/07/2026 22:29

Ashamed to admit I just typed 'wide bum crack' into google images. And now I've seen some things.

Me too 😫. But I did also get to learn the term intergluteal cleft.

Pistachiocake · 21/07/2026 22:39

Well, Gymshark has just sent an email about sportswear that avoids a unibum. No, really. And about how their ranges support, so, if you aren't joking, maybe there's some leggings that will help. Doesn't mention anything about air rushing in, though, on their site.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 21/07/2026 22:40

Well I hope I don’t experience this on my weight loss journey 🤣🤣

caringcarer · 21/07/2026 22:41

Surely you need to do squats and exercises to build your muscles back. Skin firms up over time but exercise helps a lot.

Thanks for that idea. I now feel a little bit better, at least I don’t have a polinidal cyst or an exceptionally elongated one that goes halfway up my back 🤣

Can park a bike in there - it's what they say 😁

Hohofortherobbers · 21/07/2026 23:14

Maybe a 'gap' in the market for some derrier shape wear .... some cleavage enhancing wonderpants maybe?

Notellinganyone · 21/07/2026 23:18

The bum curtain comment made me laugh so much I woke up DH.

I always took that to mean the opposite, that it’s got a tight crack that would grip the tyre firmly enough to hold the bike upright, if one’s bum were a bike rack. A wide crack would be no use at all. Your bike would fall over.

Gribouille · 21/07/2026 23:55

The Daily Mail will be using this to frighten women off Wegovy any day now...

ThisAutumnTown · 22/07/2026 00:13

I can’t even picture what a wide bum crack would look like and I’m too scared to google 😳

Now I'm imagining OP getting the Mumsnet-approved penguin bollard to stop people parking their bikes up there... 😜

But seriously, if you're worried, of course see a GP or ask a physio about it... my first thought would be that it's just how skinnier bums are and you're not used to it yet (and well done on your weight loss and getting fitter!)...

But I'm not a bum expert, and now I'm afraid to look online...

Cora0 · 22/07/2026 00:43

Erm, I wouldn’t be engaging with this. Probably the same bloke that made all the other ones trying to get women to talk about their bodies. It’s very similar to the “wide vagina” one. 🤢
