Why has by bum crack got so wide after losing weight?!

Not something I want to admit to anyone IRL, so hoping some Mumsnetters can shed some light on why my bum crack has become so massive!! Over the last year I’ve lost 4 stone. My starting bmi was 29, it’s now 20. Obviously my body has changed a lot, mainly positively, but a not so positive change I’ve noticed recently is a much wider bum crack! When I’m playing sports and doing lots of running around I can literally feel the wind going up it, it feels like the left bum cheek isn’t even making contact with the right and they’re permanently separated by pretty sizeable gap. Before I lost weight there was no gap, both cheeks sat next to each other skin to skin. I feel like I have a baggy butt now and it’s a bit disconcerting. I’ve done strength training throughout my weightloss and have fairly firm glute muscles and no noticeably saggy skin, however my bum crack is noticeably wider even to look at. It’s making me self-conscious. Is a wide bum crack just part of being slim if you have a certain body shape? Is this normal and I’m just not used to it? I really don’t like the feeling of having a wide crack, this is going to sound weird I know, but it feels like the inside of my body isn’t protected enough or I could have an anal prolapse at any minute 😬

Erm, I wouldn’t be engaging with this. Probably the same bloke that made all the other ones trying to get women to talk about their bodies. It’s very similar to the “wide vagina” one. 🤢

Not every thread talking about intimate parts is some pervy bloke. If posters keep accusing every poster that wants advice about something intimate/embarrassing/personal it’ll scare them off from posting and they won’t get the advice they need, so please stop doing this.

Try doing some glutes exercises - there's an easy one called glute bridges where you lie down with your knees bent and push your hips upwards. If you do a few of those everyday I reckon you'll feel a difference

Spidermandino · 22/07/2026 08:07

Hey OP time to work out your glute. Buy some weights and do the following 2 times a week.
3x8 Glute thrusts
3x8 Reverse lunges
3x8 Romanian dead lifts
Increase the weight as it gets easier.

Yeah, yeah I know it’s funny, I’m ’cracking myself up’ talking about it with my sister, the only person I told IRL 🤣 but it’s still genuine! Disappointed to hear that no one else who’s lost a significant amount of weight notices this. Now I feel like a right freak. When I say wide maybe I’m describing normal for some people and I’m just used to a very tight one when I was bigger. There’s probably no way to ever find out!

At least you could now 'make it clap' if you ever felt the urge.

I do already strength train 3 or 4 times a week, including glute exercises. I can feel I have decently developed glute muscles. This is why it’s worrying - it doesn’t seem to be making a difference. Maybe I need to go harder on the glute exercises and do them daily at home or something?

I think what you’re describing is a normal bum crack 😂. When I gained weight, my buttocks were bigger and therefore pressed more tightly together, giving the impression of a narrower bum crack. In reality, it was just my fat ass filling all the available space.

I have lost 3.5 stone, now at a BMI of 20.7 and I have also noticed this. It's a very odd side effect and I also have noticed I can feel my tail bone a lot more, especially if doing sit ups on a non-padded surface (super uncomfortable).
