A thread for all us GI diet followers (and anyone interested in it).

If you have any yum recipes or tips to share, please do .

If you have any questions about following a GI diet, there's bound to be a Mumsnetter who knows the answer .

I'll be posting my progress on the thread weekly - if anyone else wants to - great!

Here are some useful links (some posted on other threads, but I thought I'd bring them together here):

Has anyone seen the Food Doctor Book? I just got a copy of the Diet for life - it is based on GI principles and looks quite easy - NO more calorie or points counting. Also tells you to use an 80:20 rule. If you follow GI principles for 80% of the time, you can 'cheat' for 20% of the time - so going to a party, dinner or a night out shouldn't be a time for abstenance, just common sense.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 23/03/2005 15:05

gingerbear, I totally agree with the 80/20 rule regarding following the GI diet - that's what I do and have continued to lose weight steadily.

Consultancy required please.

I basically can't face buying another diet book...I have them all (WW/Atkins/Food Separation)and am still overweight! I have lost quite a lot of weight recently by just applying what I already know but wondering if there are improvements that I could make with the GI principles that seem so sensible.

Breakfast - I have semi-skimmed milk and sultana bran or just right which has nuts in it.
Lunch ( work so buy this in)- I have veg soup and ryvita or sushi or low fat houmous and falafel.
After work - wheat free snack to stop me picking so honey cake or sultanas
Dinner - contained portion of shepherds pie or jacket potato and tuna or veg curry and rice or omelette or smoked haddock/cheese sauce and veg.
Treat to stop me drinking wine is hot chocolate

What d'ya reckon?

decmum · 23/03/2005 15:22

Sorry...also meant to ask about Pasta. I've tried to avoid it in the evening but it's so easy to do so does the GI diet allow it and if so with what?

Caribbeanqueen · 23/03/2005 15:31

Hi decmum,

Pasta is ok, best al dente. Pasta, rice etc should only cover 1/4 of your plate, protein 1/4 and veg the other 1/2.

Hot chocolate is full of sugar, I swapped it for cocoa and add a spoonful of fruisana to sweeten it up a bit.

Jacket potato and mash are high GI. Boiled new potatoes are the best, also sweet potatoes. The best breakfast is porridge, made with large oatflakes and skimmed milk. I put sultanas and banana in it.

Basmati and brown rice are low GI, others are high.

Hope that helps, someone will no doubt correct me if I got anything wrong there!

decmum · 23/03/2005 16:03

Thanks CQ...that really helps me to fine tune...weird how the method of cooking makes such a difference.

emmamama · 23/03/2005 18:54

Kofta meatballs

500g extra lean beef or lamb, finely minced
1 onion, finely chopped
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground mixed spice
pinch of cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
lemon wedges to serve

1 Blend all the ingredients except the oil in a food processor until smooth.

2 Take a small handful of the mixture and, using your hands, roll it into a ball. Repeat until you have used all the mixture to make 16 meatballs.

3 Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs until they are golden brown and cooked through. Drain on absorbent kitchen paper and serve with lemon wedges. They are delcious with a green salad and couscous or brown rice.

Yum Yum

chicken and lentil recipe wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy up the thread is delish. I think it would be good with fish instead too.

Have been lurking on this thread for a while...but have lost about half a stone .

anorak · 23/03/2005 19:50

decmum, cheese is not recommended. If you do use it you should use it very sparingly as a flavouring agent.

Caribbeanqueen · 24/03/2005 15:27

Can anyone explain why the Helen Foster book has cheese as low GI and the Rick Stein has it all as high unless fat-free?

Have to admit I'm finding it hard to give up cheese!

anorak · 24/03/2005 15:31

No idea, I'm talking about the advice in the original GI diet book by Rick Gallop.

Must admit, I like cheese and do miss it. I just try to ration it out.

Caribbeanqueen · 24/03/2005 15:44

Sorry, meant Rick Stein!!

Caribbeanqueen · 24/03/2005 15:44

GALLOP!!!

Must get it right!

lost 1½ this week
how's everyone else doing?

I have loads of diet/healthy eating books too, but it all helps, taken something from them all to find what works for me.

I like the Food Doc and being careful to keep blood glucose levels even, which makes a big difference for me.

But not really understood his protion control, and often do want carbs in the evening ( which is contrary to the plan), but have been able to cut back without any feeling of deprivation. Not too sure about some of the Food Doc recipes.

I also have the new You Are What You Eat cook book as well, and like that too When get myself organised will try her version of sushi with veg and brown rice.

Christie and sw, there's a few books recommended on here and lots of recipes.

Helen Fosters "Easy GI diet" book is good.

I've just ordered Anthony Worral Thompson's new book too. It's on BOL.com with about 60% off at the mo.

I'm not around for a couple of weeks, so good luck everyone.
