PuffTheMagicDragon · 28/01/2005 21:10

A thread for all us GI diet followers (and anyone interested in it).

If you have any yum recipes or tips to share, please do .

If you have any questions about following a GI diet, there's bound to be a Mumsnetter who knows the answer .

I'll be posting my progress on the thread weekly - if anyone else wants to - great!

Here are some useful links (some posted on other threads, but I thought I'd bring them together here):

Sunday Times GI Diet

The Glycemic Index (including database of foods)

GI diet recipe ideas at bottom of this page

Suzywong - alcohol is off the list if you want to follow the diet religiously. Think Helen Foster is a bit more relaxed when on the maintenance plan (everything in moderation, stick to safe limits, etc.). I think people on here have lost weight despite having the odd glass or more of wine during the week.

I am restarting my healthy eating after rather a lengthy bad spell. I will still have my wine though!

suzywong · 25/03/2005 13:06

Hmmm...sounds reasonable

yoyo · 25/03/2005 16:28

Suzywong - this is especially good if you like cooking. I have never really cooked using pulses before (the odd recipe or two) and I have enjoyed finding new dishes. It isn't that restrictive and I think is actually a sensible way to eat. You do have to be sensible though...

{Sleeping still pretty bad at times. Had a few good WEEKS where he just woke once and settled quickly but he was then ill and so things not so good at the moment. Co-incided with my fall off the GI wagon! How about you?)

suzywong · 25/03/2005 23:39

sorry to hear that

well we are doing great, both kids up at 6am with just one night murmur from the little one.....however the clocks go back here tomorrow so F knows how thats going to pan out

OK back to GI

suzywong · 28/03/2005 05:15

even though I have killed this thread stone dead...can anyone please point me to a website that lists foods and their G1 index?

Like a table with the ingredient in one column and the value in the other

TIA

I've been trying to get below 11 stone for over 2 years now. Well I weighed myself this morning and I was exactly 11 stone so I'm quite excited!

And that's despite the fact that we have been constantly boozing all weekend, and eating Easter eggs.

I like this diet!

anorak · 28/03/2005 11:23

But that Christie is a saint! We were out together on Saturday night and she drank Perrier all night.

Caribbeanqueen · 28/03/2005 11:35

Well done anorak!

I've had a bit of a block for the last couple of weeks and have stayed the same. Managed not to eat all the Easter eggs lying around though - wasn't easy.

I'm away for a few weeks now, so good luck everyone. I expect I'll be starting at the beginning again when I come back!

anorak · 28/03/2005 11:52

I wish you'd change your name, CQ. Every time I read one of your posts that song gets stuck in my head and won't go away for hours!

Caribbeanqueen · 28/03/2005 11:53

I am thinking of changing it actually, so don't worry!

I saw that link but you have to type in the food and it comes up with dozens of different variations, and confuses my poor head- anything simpler out there?

I was on the wagon til tea time, had a lovely bean and tomato things for lunch and porridge for breakfast but the Lindt Easter Bunny was needing to be put out of its misery and tehn there was the cheese sandwich on white bread..

anorak · 28/03/2005 13:09

Fine thanks Christie. My cousin Kimi is coming over with her crowd, we are having lunch and then going to the BB for the Easter Egg hunt. Do you fancy it? It starts at 3 if you do.

CQ, I feel guilty now! Don't change your name just for me. But that blooming song, over and over...

bluebear · 29/03/2005 23:05

Hello All,
I've been watching the GI of what I eat for 5 years now (off and on as I am insulin resistant. My dh and children are vegetarian so I find have found it difficult in the past - I've just got the Easy GI book (my 4th and best GI book so far) and it has some great veggie recipes in it...can anyone recommend any others?

I usually try to stay to low/med GI foods just to feel OK and not put on too much weight but I am trying to slowly lose weight this year - have lost 10lb since Jan 1st but hoping to increase the rate now I have the new book.

Katya · 30/03/2005 09:02

Hi Bluebear
congrats on 10lbs loss.
I've been doing GI (on and off too !) for few years, and keen to keep with it as feel much better.
will look out for the book you mention.

I am not veggie, but eat a lot more pulses and vegs than any vegetarian I've met.

I think it helps to consider the GI of whole meal, so one medium GI element may be balanced out by something like kidney bean salad in vinaigrette.

Katya · 30/03/2005 09:04

Anorak:
good luck getting under 11 stones !

anorak · 30/03/2005 09:07

Thanks Katya.

I had a dream last night that Christie and I were in a post cafe having hot chocolate and cake...

Now I'm nursing a mug of Hi-lights

anorak · 30/03/2005 09:08

A posh cafe, I meant...

pleased to report I've lost 1.4lbs this week
that's 4lbs since I got back on track 3 weeks ago. It's not a diet, but a life style thing and it works

how's everyone else managing?

suzywong · 02/04/2005 11:00

I'm nearly ready to dive in

I looked at the link on the Sydney University page for lists of foods and their Gi values, but it was confusing for me

Can anyone link me to a simple tabular one, for example;
Cabbage 100g = GI of x
weetabix 100g = GI of x

please?

The cooking and recipes I can work out for myself if I have an idea of what foods are good bad or indifferent
Thanks

decmum · 06/04/2005 13:58

Finally relented and have bought the book and now on track completely.

Loved the knowledge that drinking four cups of green tea a day speeds up your matabolism AND that eating the recommended daily allowance of fibre will force your body to burn 250 calories a day!

One thing that confuses me a little is the sugar elements. Can I use a little honey to sweeten nat yoghurt/stewed fruit etc? The best sugar replacement is fruisana? Are these sugars ok for DS...my brother is diabetic and I thought they'd issued some warnings about the use of these types of sugars (which he was using at the time) but I want to keep doing this and being able to feed DS as well. Generally I try to take the bitterness off berry fruits, cooking apples etc with honey but would a sugar replacement be better?

Once again....consultancy required. Thanks.

Bye the way, I am so impressed that so many of you are taking the time to do this diet and re-educate their eating habits rather than just try to eat nothing all day.
