PuffTheMagicDragon · 28/01/2005 21:10

A thread for all us GI diet followers (and anyone interested in it).

If you have any yum recipes or tips to share, please do .

If you have any questions about following a GI diet, there's bound to be a Mumsnetter who knows the answer .

I'll be posting my progress on the thread weekly - if anyone else wants to - great!

Here are some useful links (some posted on other threads, but I thought I'd bring them together here):

Sunday Times GI Diet

The Glycemic Index (including database of foods)

GI diet recipe ideas at bottom of this page

hmb, did you really feel ill? How so? Did you feel sluggish, or tired, or what? I'm just curious as to how you feel different (if that makes any sense!).

happymerryberries · 13/03/2005 16:05

Ate too much high GI and felt quite sick as a result. Had heartburn as well. We ate what was a normal weekend treat meal, pizza with ice cream to follow. Before we started the diet i would have felt fine. I think it is a combination of slight shrinkage of the stomach but also getting used to low GI foods, so unused to the sugar rush/insulin release sequence. I can't say it will never happen again , but it was unpleasent enough for me to be back on the diet today.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 13/03/2005 16:09

Some great weight losses on here. Well done .

I've got back to the straight and narrow and feel much better for it. Weigh in on Tues for me as usual.

So many people have lost so much weight - well done

Riebee your starting weight and ideal weight are virtually the same as mine. I was about 10 1/4 stone pre-pregnancy and after having my baby last October I weighed 12 1/2 stone. I did lose the first half stone without really dieting and then put on 2 lb at christmas so started dieting in January at 12 stone 2, but I haven't lost much more than half a stone I still weigh more than 11 1/2 stone and as well as dieting I'm going to the gym twice a week. It's certainly slow progress.

Has anyone got the AWT book yet, by the way? Are the recipes good?

yoyo · 14/03/2005 11:09

I thought AWT's new book was on release today?

Katya · 14/03/2005 13:55

I got the AWT book few days ago, BOL must send them out early.
Recipes look nice - not tried any yet.
Long 1st section explaining all about GI, but well explained.-

sophy · 14/03/2005 14:14

sorry haven't read the whole thread ... was wondering if anyone has been on the GI diet long-term, can you keep the weight off?
Did Atkins 2 years ago and lost loads of weight but piled it on again very quickly as soon as I stopped. Vowed never to go on another diet again, but GI does seem like a sensible approach.

Katya · 14/03/2005 22:39

Hi Sophy

GI is sensible habit for life, not just a diet.

I refused to diet as feared yoyoing, and ending up event heavier. I found out I had classical allergy to wheat and Doc told me about GI in summer 2002, and am 4.5 stones lighter. I've not been following a diet sheet, just the general principles.

anorak · 14/03/2005 22:54

I cheat rather a lot but my weight is going down very gradually as I slowly stock up on all the recommended foods. And I feel quite energetic - it's great health-wise. And lovely food. I don't feel deprived at all.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 14/03/2005 22:56

I've lost over 4 stone since last August, following the GI diet. I haven't stuck to it rigidly, like others, I've followed the general principles.

Caribbeanqueen · 14/03/2005 23:13

Weigh-in today and I've now lost a stone. I was so happy, as I seemed to put on a bit at the start of last week. I blame it on the apple bran muffins dp made from the Rick Gallop book - I'm not ready for that much bran!

PuffTheMagicDragon · 15/03/2005 10:38

Down 3 lbs this week .

OP posts:
Katya · 15/03/2005 13:57

congrats PuffTMD !
3lbs loss in one week and you're just following the general principles - wow !
well done !

Katya · 15/03/2005 13:58

well done on stone loss CQ !
when did you start with GI diet?

anorak · 15/03/2005 14:10

Have you got much more to lose, puff? It's heartening to hear you can still lose 3lb in a week after so long.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 15/03/2005 14:21

anorak, yes, I've still got a way to go, another 2 stone to get to my weight just before my first pregnancy. But ideally, it should be another 3. I try not to think about the fact that if/when I achieve that, I will have lost over 7 stones !

What's interesting for me is the pattern of my weight loss. I get quite a big loss 1 week and then the following week v little/stay the same, and this seems to be the way my body does it.

OP posts:
Caribbeanqueen · 15/03/2005 14:31

katya, I started towards the end of January. I lost 3 lbs last week.

I have about another stone and a half to go, but any more I can lose before I go on holiday in 2 weeks will be wonderful!

anorak · 18/03/2005 14:02

I've made some gorgeous bread in my breadmaker. Wholemeal flour with a handful of sunflower seeds.

Really crumbly and delicious, and you feel full after one slice.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2005 14:05

cq, well done on the weightloss.

Bread sounds yummy anorak.

emmamama · 22/03/2005 18:13

Been quite poorly for the last few days with a stomach bug. I hadn't eaten much more than a few bowls of poridge since Saturday, so was gutted when i weighed myself and had only lost a pound this week!

Trying a tortilla pizza for tea, you're supposed to put tomato and pear on it (?). Not sure how that will work.

Doesn't everyone seem really positive on this thread?

(Just posted on wrong thread, doh)

PuffTheMagicDragon · 23/03/2005 10:05

emmamama, losing 1lb is great, be proud of yourself .

I've lost a pound and a quarter this week.

Has anyone got the Anthony WT book?

Can you tell me a few of the recipes? If I like the sound of them I think I'll get it.

OP posts:
emmamama · 23/03/2005 11:19

Got the AWT book at the weekend. There's some fantastic recipies, calling for a lot more ingredients but they would be great for special dinners. There's also a nutritional breakdown of every dish.
PTMB there seems to be a recipie for everything, is there anything in particular you'd like? It's broken into categories, Breakfasts and baking, soups, salads, starters sandwiches and snacks, vegetables, fish, meat and poultry, puddings and finally sauces and accompaniments. Sorry, did't realise there was so many lol!
