A thread for all us GI diet followers (and anyone interested in it).

If you have any yum recipes or tips to share, please do .

If you have any questions about following a GI diet, there's bound to be a Mumsnetter who knows the answer .

I'll be posting my progress on the thread weekly - if anyone else wants to - great!

Here are some useful links (some posted on other threads, but I thought I'd bring them together here):

Sunday Times GI Diet

The Glycemic Index (including database of foods)

GI diet recipe ideas at bottom of this page

Anorak, are you veggie?

It does look good, but does everythign have to be preprepared? Can you have for example, a tin of soup?

anorak · 03/03/2005 10:18

No lilibet. I used to be but now I eat fish. No meat though.

I think you can have a tin of soup. I read through a lot of the recipes you can find from the links posted by puff, and I'm sure tins of soup were mentioned.

lilibet · 03/03/2005 10:24

Me too! did you know that we are piscaterians?

It's a phraase that sums me up perfectly - as in 'oh look, she's pisc'ed again '

will be very interested in what you eat and how you do, I may take the plunge with this in a week or so when I've had chance to read up on it and whn Mothers Day is over!

anorak · 03/03/2005 10:25

Piscaterians is a bit fancy for me

Caribbeanqueen · 03/03/2005 14:52

I have quite a lot of soup, and I haven't got round to making it myself yet! So it's all shop-bought. I just try and go for the ones with lots of vegetables and beans etc and avoid the creamy, cheesy ones.

I also have the odd glass of wine at the weekend. I think tofu and soya are fine, but I don't have my book to hand at the moment.

I have done quite well the last couple of weeks and am now back on track after my little deviation. I've lost 12 lbs so far, 4 of those in the last week (thanks to tonsilitis!).

Yoyo, thanks for those recipes!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

happymerryberries · 05/03/2005 08:59

I am now 11 stone (70kg) and have now lost 7 kg! I have to lose another 4 pund to be at the top end of the 'Healty' BMI!!!! So I am in sight of not being 'overweight' for the first time in about 9 years!!!!!!!!!!

Had buckwheat pancakes with pears for breakfast.

Last night had a wonderful supper of baked sweet potatoes with low fat cream cheese, peas and a chicken breast baked with herbs and garlic.....wonderful.

This is the diet to go on IMHO if you like your food and worry about the health implications of diet. It tastes so good and is so healthy!!!!

anorak · 05/03/2005 09:55

How does 6 glasses of white wine and a curry score? . That's what I had last night.

Having eggs and rice cake now though. Back on the straight and narrow.

happymerryberries · 05/03/2005 10:36

Rice cakes are very high on the GI index. they are low in fat but they are metabolised very quickly, so you will feel hungry sooner than if you had, say, rye bread or granery bread.

nicmum2boys · 05/03/2005 11:58

Hi, can I join you? DH and I have just decided we are going to give the GI diet a go. I am a bit disollusioned on the diet front and thought this one might give me the boost I need. I joined a gym at the end of Jan, and have been going 3 times a week doing swimming and aerobic type things, and following what I think of as a reasonably healthy diet, but have only been losing a pound a week. Not that bad, except I am near on 6 stone over my ideal weight , so would expect to be losing a bit quicker really. Have been following this thread and drooling over the recipes, so thought I will finally take the plunge and go for it. DH is diabetic so should be really good for him too.
I do have a few questions, if I can pick someone's brains, do I have to give up my night time options hot choc? Also are you allowed a glass of wine (or 2), as come friday evening I do like to indulge in a little tipple? Tia .

happymerryberries · 05/03/2005 14:07

You are supposed to give up totaly, I must comfess that I havn't, but now limit myself to wine rather than beer or spirits (better GI), and have halved my intake to anout three quaters of a bottle a week. and as I said I have lost a stone and five pounds since January. As you said GI is great for diabetics and is better, I think, for people with more than just a few pounds to shift (I have another stone to go!)

Give it a go, I bet you will find it great. We used two books (listed earlier on the thread) and have found it very easy to do

Good luck!

Caribbeanqueen · 05/03/2005 14:37

hi nicmum and welcome!

I still have about half a glass of wine Friday/Saturday evenings (my alcohol tolerance is very low these days!). I also have hot chocolate but make it with 100% cocoa and add a spoonful of Fruisana. The packet hot choclates are full of sugar, which increases their GI.

I've lost 11 lbs since end January. It could have been more but I had a couple of bad weeks in the middle (and a massive Chinese last night!). I find it easier if I don't totally deprive myself of things I like.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

anorak · 05/03/2005 15:28

Just got back from shopping, have bought all-bran, oat cereal, rye and oat crackers, wholegrain bread, cans of beans and chickpeas and lashings of fresh fruit and veg. Feel very holy now!

yoyo · 06/03/2005 14:21

There are some more recipes in today's Sunday Times too. Haven't had a chance to look at them yet and now I have the Mother's Day chocs and DD's birthday cake to deal with. Tomorrow I will be on the straight and narrow (have been saying this since half-term).

nicmum2boys · 06/03/2005 22:11

Wow, happymerryberries and Caribbeanqueen I am at your weight loss, that is brilliant! Will be over the moon if I can acheive something similar.
Glad to hear I can get away with a glass of wine too, as I really look forward to my weekend drinkies. Like you said, Caribbeanqueen, it really helps if you don't feel deprived. I figure I have enough weight to loose, I'd like to give myself some scope so when I get nearer to goal (though that seems a long way off) I have something I can cut back on if my loss slows or stops.
I had a look at my options hot choc, and was really surprised that sugar is quite high up on the ingredients list, so will look out for some 100% cocoa, thanks for that. I have also bought some fruit teas to see if they help my sweet cravings.
We have a really good recipe book called "Quick Cooking for Diabetes" by Louise Blair which has loads of good recipes all with GI, although I think it may have gone out of print at some point as on Amazon it says it's not published til June. Last night we had baked trout with butterbean mash (was delicious), and tomorrow for lunch we are having lentil and parma ham salad, which was also yummy on tasting earlier (purely for seasoning you understand). Be happy to post recipes if anyone wants them.
Off now to browse amazon for more books, think I will get the Helen Foster one, and there's also one called "The High Energy Cookbook", which I think I saw mentioned here. Anyone know if it's any good?

emmamama · 07/03/2005 20:56

Welcome Nicmum, and yes it really does work! I have been a GI dieter since the end of January and to date have lost 17 lbs, though I still have another 2 1/2 stone to go.I'm losing about 3lbs a week.

Have just made the jelly from last weeks Sunday Times, although it hasn't set yet I can't help sticking my finger in as it tastes devine.

Should we badger the newspaper to have a weekly GI recipie page?

Riebee · 07/03/2005 22:12

Hello all

weighed myself today and I couldn't believe it I have only got 6lbs to go until I am my pre-pregnancy weight and the size I was when I got married last year (size 12) I am soo chuffed especially as I haven't been trying all that hard since I got back from hols. I have even sneaked a couple of creme eggs . Strangely chocolate seems to give me stomach ache these days
I was so surprised at the weight loss that I wasted 30pence by having another go on the scales in Boots as I thought there was a mistake. I now weigh 10st 10 which makes a loss of nearly 2stone since Jan.
Haven't had time to read all the posts but seems like everyone is doing ok.
Looking forward to summer this year and some nice new clothes.

Katya · 07/03/2005 23:14

hello and may I join in?
This is my first post on mumsnet, but I've been lurking here and on special needs for a little while.

I'm part way through weightloss journey, have lost 5 stones since summer 2002, and hit a big plateau over last year...and need to get refocus and get the remaining extra weight shifted. I am not sure what my long-term goal weight is, but would like to lose a stone to get under BMI 30 and be merely overweight and finally out of the obese range.

Rather than following a specific diet sheet I've just been eating healthily, wheat-free and GI aware. It's amazing to see how GI has become so big. When I started, on my Doctor's advice after some dodgy blood sugar tests, no-one hard heard of it, and there were hardly any resources. Now there's a new GI diet book or review every other week !

I've pre-ordered AWT's GI recipe book from BOL.co.uk - nice cheap offer, cheaper than amazon I think.

Caribbeanqueen · 07/03/2005 23:41

Hi Katya, welcome. I didn't know AWT had a GI book, I'll look out for that. 5 stone is brilliant!

Well done Riebee and emmamama! I only lost 1 lb this week, but am going to try a bit harder as I go on holiday at the end of the month!

Katya · 08/03/2005 11:08

thanks CQ

here's the blurb:
Welcome to a new way of dieting!

100 specially crafted recipes following the GI diet, from top chef Antony Worrall Thompson. These recipes will taste unlike any other diet you have been on! Antony has been committed to healthy eating since he was diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition. He decided to combat his condition by eating well, and losing weight, following the revolutionary GI diet. The Glycaemic Index is a measure of how fast carbohydrates are broken down into glucose by the body and therefore how fast they raise blood sugar levels. Foods are divided into low, medium and high GI, with low GI foods being slow to digest, making you feel less hungry, and helping you to lose weight. Antony has devised a full menu of recipes, from breakfasts to snacks and dinners, combining modern ingredients with his own trademark flair for simple, but satisfying, food.
100 fantastic recipes, explanatory text and stunning photography ? a diet book you can be proud of!

I have fallen off the wagon recently and need to get back to the GI way. The cold weather hasn't helped. I lost a quarter of a pound this week despite stuffing myself with chips and bread.

OP posts:
nicmum2boys · 12/03/2005 22:27

I lost 5lb this week!!!! I'm absolutely amazed. It's official, the GI diet works! Feel like I have finally found a diet I can stick to. I find I'm really thinking about what I eat and why. When faced with something I would normally snack on, like the boys' leftovers I'm not tempted, and can actually throw it away. Can't believe how full I have felt. I was convinced I hadn't lost any weight as I've been having snacks and things I wouldn't normally have, like nuts.

Anyway, enough of my gloating, how's everyone else doing?

maomao · 13/03/2005 15:28

Hello all,

The latest Food Monthly has an article on the GI diet. Here.

I've read thru this thread, and must say that you are all inspiring!

happymerryberries · 13/03/2005 15:32

Fell off the wagon yesterday and felt quite ill as a result. Glad to be back on today.

Lost a stone and 6 pound altogether
