Anyone want to join me in some motivational supportive chat.

I'm 56 and 3.5 stone overweight. I'm 5'2" and weigh 13 stone

Depressingly I've lost this before - in 2019 I lost 2 stone and felt much better and was really disciplined ... and then I stopped and the weight crept back on.

I feel fat, frumpy, unhappy in my clothes and my middle spare tyre feels awful.

If I could lose 2 stone again I'd be thrilled - 3.5 is the dream.

Last time what worked for me was healthy breakfast, green smoothie for lunch and balanced tea. In between meals veg sticks or an oat cake as a snack.

My downfalls are savoury stuff - crisps, cheese, savoury biscuits.

I've been diagnosed as pre diabetic with high blood pressure which I'm hoping will be the kick up the arse I need.

This time I'm trying to up my game with exercise - I have 'treated' myself to about elliptical machine. Horrifyingly on the first day I could only do 2 minutes - I'm up to 15 mins now - I am aiming for 30 mins a day of elliptical/walking.

Anyone want to join me and share what is working for them?

It doesn't , a lb of fat is a lb , and a lb of muscle also weighs a lb. It An urban myth .
What is different is the density .

Yes of course, sorry if I didn’t spell this out. A cubic cm of muscle weighs more to a cubic cm of fat.

It a good idea to use scales in conjunction with a tape measure 😎

How's everyone doing as we head into the weekend?

I've been pretty good all week, although today ate more bread than I intended.

I've had a good week but weakened tonight - I had a Turkish Delight and a microwave prawn curry - but cut my calories massively during the day, so hopefully it's not done too much damage.

Sunshineandrainbow · 16/01/2026 22:09

I have been ok , come to bed early tonight to stay away from the kitchen!

Funnywonder · 17/01/2026 00:50

I’ve been crap today. It started with a slice of FIL’s birthday cake. It could have ended there, but didn’t! Back on board tomorrow. And planning to dust off the old kettlebells. I’ve been putting it off due to tennis elbow. No tennis involved sadly. Just an obsessive crochet habit🤣 Said elbow is now pain free all of a sudden after several weeks of rest. It was weird because it was just as bad as ever one day, then gone the next. No gradual improvement. Ah well, just glad I can lift a 2l carton of milk out of the fridge without wincing.

Hello feel a bit if a fraud but can i join?
Im 54, 5ft 2 and lost 2.5 stone on MJ.
Have another stone to go before im in healthy weight bmi and frankly things arent moving.
Im veering between giving up as im thrilled ive lost 2.5 stone.
Thankfully being 54 people stopped thinking i was pregnant! But i have had that experience a few times!
Ive had my gallbladder removed and been fine on MJ.
Getting it removed was the best thing i did as gall bladder attacks/pain are appalling, no problems since.
Anyway guess im just pissed off as a short menopausal women its soooo hard to lose weight even compared to how it was even 10 years ago in my mid 40s.
And days of cutting back and seeing instant results like in my 20s have long since gone.
Its a hard slog , MJ makes it easier as less food noise, but still been very slow as apparently my body needs hardly any food🥺
good luck everyone.

Aw, don’t feel like a fraud. You’ve still had to go through the process of changing how you eat, injections or not. It’s hard to change habits. There’s at least one other poster upthread who has used MJ. Possibly more. 2.5 stone is absolutely fantastic👏 Oh, and welcome.

Inspired by another thread on MN, I googled if it was actually harder to lose weight in winter and it turns out that it is! Apparently it could be due to the shorter days and the impact that has on our circadian rhythm. Various articles suggested spending 20 minutes outside in the middle of the day so that's one to try over the next couple of weeks.

Another non scale victory this morning. I have a ball to go to in a couple of weeks. The last ball was I went to was almost two years ago and for that one I squeezed into a size 26 dress. I bought a size 18 dress from the same brand on vinted this week and it arrived yesterday. Tried it on this morning and...it's too big! Fortunately it was only £4 so I've not lost much. I will gift it to a local school who hold a stock of prom dresses for girls who would struggle to buy one.

Now have a size 16 dress coming, but more expensive but still a good buy.

Cardio and pilates classes done this morning. I can see progression in what I am able to do which is really encouraging.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 17/01/2026 12:28

I have lost 1.5kg on Slimming world so feeling positive. Don’t feel deprived in anyway so should be able to sustain progress, hopefully.

One pound a week is excellent - how are you feeling? What changes you have made have made the biggest difference?

TheaBrandt1 · 19/01/2026 07:52

I’m 3kg down in a week shows the variance of cycle / water retention etc or my good habits finally having an effect .

Funnywonder · 19/01/2026 08:12

Well done @RoosterCogburn. Nice and steady.

3kg @TheaBrandt1! That’s absolutely brilliant!

I am still 12st 11lbs unfortunately. Not altogether a shock as I kind of lost the plot from Friday onwards. At least I haven’t gained. I think I need a new plan though!

YourJollyGoose · 19/01/2026 08:34

Hope you don’t mind me joining in late. I’m really struggling to lose weight despite trying lots of things, I just can seem to stick to it for long enough. As soon as I’m tired/hormonal / sick the cycle restarts.

I have a dr appointment this week to address a few things so I’m hopeful I’ll feel a bit better after then.

This week I’m committing to working out at least 3 times, logging food & keeping my steps up.

Todays weigh in 194lbs

Morning!
I've been using the Freshwell app that was recommended by a mumsnetter on another thread. It's basically about lowering blood sugar by eating low carb. It's a free app developed by NHS GPs. I've lost about half a stone on it.

topsecretcyclist · 19/01/2026 13:12

My starting weight was 80.3kg, yesterday I was 79.8kg. Not a massive loss, but the yellow sticker christmas chocolates have all disappeared 😳 I went swimming 3 times last week, and have been this morning. Hopefully now the chocolates are gone I'll make a bit more progress!

Well done everyone who has lost weight. 😊

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 19/01/2026 14:33

Hello everyone. I've lost more this week to make a total about about 10lbs lost over 2 weeks. I'm happy with that although it is a drop in the ocean it's a good start.

RoosterCogburn · 19/01/2026 19:42

Enrichetta · 19/01/2026 07:30

One pound a week is excellent - how are you feeling? What changes you have made have made the biggest difference?

Upped the exercise (not hard as it was at zero) and up until now I've just been not eating between meals and planning healthy meals.

I'm going to start tracking food now and weighting it as my portion control is dreadful.

Sadly, I don't yet feel any different but hopefully if I can keep this up and the weight goes down I will start to feel the physical changes

Well done - that's great.

I always tell myself that I could have put on the same amount of weight that I had lost - so I've lost 5lb so far - if I had gone the other way I'd have been 10lb heavier than I am right now so it doubles the feel good factor 😂

Well, I've managed to put on a pound. Not happy. Going to try harder this week and if there's no loss I'll have to start logging everything, which I was hoping to avoid as it's such a faff.
Well done to everyone else.

hopefullygoingdown · 20/01/2026 04:54

well done everyone
Lost 1/2 lb or 400g - I suppose it’s better than nothing. I did go off the rails a yesterday and have a croissant. I’ll see what this week brings

Are you only weighing weekly @BrusselsPate? I switched to weighing daily about 2 years ago and it's helped me see just how much natural wandering up and down the scales actually do day to day. My weight can easily vary by 2-3lbs a day, which, given that that's about 11,000 calories worth, can't possibly be food.

It's helped me not fix everything on one single weight on one single day and I no longer hit the ' it' button when the scales go up which used to derail me so often in the past.

Funnywonder · 20/01/2026 08:59

This is going to have to be my day to get back on track. It was supposed to be yesterday, after a week of no weight loss, but I had an unusual day in that I was out of my routine and couldn’t eat due to a combination of circumstances and stress. Then I came home and, having calmed down, I ate what was comforting and quick. And didn’t stop. The more I write it down, the more it confirms just how much my food intake is tied to stress. Mind you, if I was carefree, I’d probably eat to celebrate😅

Onwards and upwards.

Welcome.
Sounds as if you are doing really well.
How tall are you and what's your goal weight?

Sometimes I think about my goal weight and it seems so far away/out of reach I feel very depressed - but then I remind myself I didn't get fat overnight, so it isn't going to disappear overnight either

OP posts:
BrusselsPate · 20/01/2026 20:16

@petitpasta I used to weigh daily. Thought I might give weekly a go. So probably best to go back to daily, or at least every other day. I know I need to add in some exercise as well and try to increase my muscle.
