I’ve gone non UPF, I just can’t believe the difference it’s made in a week

I feel like such an idiot. I can’t believe how well I feel, how much I’m ready for bed and how much better I sleep.

this shit is radical. I was eating 40% upf (a teenagers diet is 80% 😱) and I feel brand new.

i have zero pain in my joints, during the day loads of good energy

does anyone else do this ?

landlordhell
I had chat gpt go through the pastas I had in my cupboard, they were all upf’s (clearly I’ve been buying cheap pasta 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️)

I've just skimmed the ingredient lists for a number of dried pastas on Tesco's site and haven't found any that have added ingredients.

What do the pastas in your cupboard contain other than durum wheat semolina and in the case of Tesco's cheapest own brand (Hearty Foods) Durum Wheat Semolina and Soft Wheat Flour?

party4you someone asked how much I eat. I can only eat 1000 calories as I’m very short so I responded. It’s important that people who can eat more as they’re taller or have different needs scale up. I literally said this is what I eat and detailed everything I ate, it’s not other people’s calorie needs.

How short are you?? 5 foot? Less?

Well this is why I wouldnt use an app or a rating score. If its got the general ingredients in it that I would use in my kitchen to make it, then its normal food.

And also why demonising something as a UPF as if thats the be all and end all of 'healthy' is a nonsense.

Look at my fudge, which I am unfortunately looking at. Even though I dont really believe in 'healthy' or 'not healthy' foods, no one in their right mind would say it serves any nutritional benefit really. Its got tahini, salt, sesame oil, condensed milk. Some nutrition from the seeds I might argue, but nothing else

But you know, its not a UPF and I cooked it from scratch!!

To be fair, they're quite correct, nothing in the ingredients of crunchy nut cornflakes suggest upf (other than added vitamins, which apparently generally don't count as upf).

As you say, it just goes to show that non-upf doesn't automatically mean healthy/nutritious.

Off for a bowl of crunchy nut for my lunch now... 😉

fandango52 I answered this earlier, I’m almost 4 ft 10

I may have missed your point here, and I’m sorry if that’s the case, but are you trying to say that eating mayonnaise is equivalent to eating eggs in terms of nutrients?

No she’s saying she can’t boil eggs to make her own egg mayo so she is buying egg mayo

Yes they are correct, but as you say, my point is that the whole UPF = bad, is not the right angle to go for when looking at how to balance our diets out.

Now, where are those scampi fries!!

"Egg mayonnaise" is chopped hardboiled eggs + mayonnaise.

WhySoManySocks · 18/08/2025 13:15

I cook from scratch, fast 16-8, go for months without eating crisps, eat chocolate only one day a month (pms). I STILL have a perimenopausal belly and I’m pissed off about it.

You dont boil eggs to make mayonnaise?

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2025 13:15

yes of course there are non UPF crisps - they contain potatoes, oil, salt.

Most oil in not a nova classification 4 (a UPF). Olive/sunflower etc are processed foods. Not ULTRA processed foods.

soupyspoon - no hob at the moment so I bought ready made egg mayonnaise.

She's only got an air fryer. She can't boil eggs for her salad.

So I also noticed a difference with my hrt patches. I’ve been having to use 3 a week of the 100mg. I’ve not put one on this week as my inflammation has nose dived. I put one on this morning as I need to keep it going until I get a doctors appointment.

HRT patches don’t work like that. They are designed to deliver a steady dose over 24 hours and last for at least 4 days. Changing them more often doesn’t give you any more of the hormones it just wastes the patches. The only time you need to change more often is if they fall off.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 13:18

Oh you mean eggs and mayonnaise in a tub. Nothing wrong with that really

Which reminds me of a lunch I used to have at a works canteen in the 80s, actual 'egg mayonnaise' which was hard boiled eggs, not mashed up, halved, on salad, with mayonnaise drizzled over it, with cayenne pepper on top

You would never see that now, but it was gorgeous. The fact that the egg is nearly still whole made such a difference. Now its just mushed up pap.

Yes I misunderstood I thought someone was making reference to making mayonnaise with a boiled egg rather than raw egg

And I thought I saw on youtube someone making eggs in an airfryer?

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2025 13:20

beentheretoolong no, I wear 2 patches at all times. Over last week I’ve had no joint pain so haven’t used any.

I think 'egg mayonnaise ' means hard boiled eggs chopped up in mayonnaise. She could make the mayonnaise (which has eggs in it) but couldn't boil the eggs to go with it.

GameOfJones · 18/08/2025 13:23

Literally nobody is saying that a bag of non-UPF crisps is better than your very healthy lunch. It's a complete straw man argument. Most sensible people are talking about cutting down UPFs given the scientific evidence of harm they can cause and how they disrupt natural satiety cues. Not that a home cooked meal that may contain a bit of UPF sauce or whatever renders the entire thing unhealthy. Just where they could make sensible swaps or how they can generally cut down.

But I like crisps and sometimes, I want to eat them! That is fine.... I know which ones I would rather purchase (and feed to my children.)

Tesco Finest Lightly Salted Crisps
Potatoes, oil, salt

Pringles Original
Dehydrated potato, sunflower oil, palm corn oil, wheat flour, corn flour, rice flour, maltodextrin, emulsifier E471, salt, colour annatto norbixin

Interestingly, according to that website, most cereals aren't UPF either, despite someone upthread saying they were. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are apparently not, nor are Frosties...

UPF isn't just about the ingredients though, it's about the processing too. Sure, cornflakes may not contain emulsifiers but the corn is highly processed and releases energy in a different way to eating actual corn. Maybe it's less bad than coco pops but it's still not the best choice for breakfast.

I think orange juice is similar. You read the carton and it's supposedly just orange juice, but there are flavour packets in there, which they don't need to declare, and it's been highly processed and stored in vats for ages. Not the same for your body as squeezing an orange in your kitchen (or, obviously, eating the orange).

I think the whole upf debate can get confused by trying to find ready meals etc that technically pass as non-upf but really still aren't good. I understand why they are popular and convenient, and are less bad than other options, but they still aren't the same as cooking from scratch.

This is how a proper smörgås or macka (open sandwich) still looks where I live :-) egg and shrimp over salad and tomato on a piece of rye bread, decorated with dill and mayonnaise. They can be quite elaborated, with caviar and so on.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 13:27

Things like pringles though are just 'potato based snacks', they're not crisps as such

Crisps are crisps

Things like wotsits, quavers, scampi fries (SCAMPI FRIES!!) are not crisps really.

I think the cafe in BHS in the 80s used to do open sandwiches like that. I really miss that sort of thing.

It’s about calories in and calories out, if you are putting on weight you are eating more than you are expending also at middle age fat generally stops going on legs and thighs and accumulates around middle and chest, that’s why you see some middle age women with very thin legs and big belly / chest

But none of those things you're describing relate to UPF. They are 'processed' sure, but they're not classed as a UPF. It doesn't matter how processed something is, that isn't how UPF is generally defined (though I appreciate there doesn't appear to be a single definition!) - and therefore the 'Nova' score for the examples are 3, which means processed by not ultra-processed.

That is the point being made - just because something isn't classed as a UPF doesn't automatically make it 'healthy'.
