I feel like such an idiot. I can’t believe how well I feel, how much I’m ready for bed and how much better I sleep.

this shit is radical. I was eating 40% upf (a teenagers diet is 80% 😱) and I feel brand new.

i have zero pain in my joints, during the day loads of good energy

does anyone else do this ?

Im still suffering PTSD from eating 'Gold'

Arrrrggghhhhh

Oh god, Gold had a very peculiar taste. Sort of like 'artifical cheese'. I'd never heard of it or seen it till I stayed over at a friend's once and her mother made us toast. It was both fascinating and horrifying in equal measures.

I have a similar aversion to those orange plastic cheese slices that are still used everywhere. I've never even tried one because, they look like they are made of plastic.

Oh I like an orange plastic cheese slice. I dont eat burgers anymore so am bereft of the use of them now. They were also nice strangely enough on a fish finger sandwich, to sort of semi replicate a Fillet of fish from Mcdonalds.

I use Carrs flour normally, or Allinsons at a push. Two heaped tablespoons of wholemeal, then up to 400gms with white. I sometimes add oat bran (2 tablespoons). If it's a seeded loaf: Sesame and poppy (1 tablespoon of each) after the flour, then add sunflower, linseed and pumpkin (1 tablespoon of each) when the beeper goes off. Also occasionally use some whole milk in with the water. Not too keen on the ciabatta but will use this recipe occasionally. Also I like the French as there is no sugar. I always use unsalted butter as salt is added in all the recipes.

I buy the cheese slices when the dogs need tablets. It's the only food where they can't spit out the pills. 😂

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 14:23

OMG, giving your vulnerable sick pet unhealthy UPFs!!!

What are you thinking!!!

CortieTat · 19/08/2025 14:23

A quick read of the thread would suggest there are plenty of people who are confused.
They're confusing processed foods with upfs for a start.
There isnt even an agreed definition on upfs that I can find.
And if you Google upf AI suggests ready meals, crisps, cereals, sauces are all upf. Yet in this thread that has been debunked, with people giving examples of upf free all the above.
Do I eat a upf diet? Mainly, but the thread has made me aware to check things im not sure of in my quest to eat a healthier, balanced diet.

I agree that people confuse healthy eating with UPF-free eating. OP is the prime example. By “healthy” I mean a varied diet that covers our requirements for macro- and micronutrients.

My mom referred to Gold as “candle grease”. I agree with her. Vile stuff.

We only use butter now. Much nicer. And non UPF. It’s really important to get healthy fats in your diet. Fats are not “bad” or unhealthy per se.

Seaside3 · 19/08/2025 14:32

Thanks @CortieTat , at last someone who understands what im getting at. The ops post is a prime example of what I meant. She eats a very low calorie diet and I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't meet her nutritional requirements. But she's eating a upf diet....
There's ao much conflicting info out there, it can be confusing.
And I say this as someone who is relatively educated, loves food, cooking and who has time to research each 'fad' (for want of a better word).
Upf's may not be complicated or confusing, but it seems a good, balanced diet is still causing confusion to many.

What is Gold? A type of margarine?

Yes it was an awful type of margarine in the 80s. Said 'unsuitable for frying' on the front as it was made up of awful emulsifiers etc.

I’ve gone non UPF, I just can’t believe the difference it’s made in a week
Seaside3 · 19/08/2025 14:45

Ah, yes, I remember the branding now.

Its a crime against bread is what it is. Hopefully no longer available to sully and distress young minds.

It looks innocent enough :-) nearly like Arla Bregott which is just butter and rapeseed oil (and is easy to recreate at home)

I don’t eat butter or marge( have never since early childhood) but we switched back from olive spread to butter as a family a few years back but they all moaned about not being able to spread it! Now we get a spreadable Lurpack dupe. I still have butter and olive oil for cooking . Though I might try again as we eat far less bread now . Mostly if they do it’s sourdough toast so would melt anyway. DH tends to make wraps so none required and he uses my homemade hummus .

Aye. The packaging is a bit misleading. It was withdrawn due to new food safety standards. Its famous strapline was that it had 'half the fat of margarine' and it was a lurid orangey colour which was achieved via various food colourings and preservatives which I think are now banned

Seaside3 · 19/08/2025 15:01

@landlordhell we leave it out. My kitchen doesn't get toowarm. Or tell them to treat it like cheese!

Yes I did l leave it out, got a butter dish etc . Think it was in the winter and just on soft bread(upf supermarket loaf) so probably fine on a tougher sourdough loaf.

Reignonyourparade · 19/08/2025 15:14

CatherineHowardsad · 19/08/2025 13:24

Most sourdough is nice toasted but not that nice just sliced. I get a delicious Japanese bread from an indie bakery. No UPF unless you count the white flour. Lovely and soft. Must learn how to make.

White flour is not UPF. It has stuff removed, (vitamins ignored) not added.

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 15:15

Yes you have to slice hard butter like cheese

I put half a pack of butter in a little plastic lock n lock pot on the worktop. Not that attractive but in a cool part of the kitchen it does ok.

Reignonyourparade · 19/08/2025 15:21

I have a butter dish that warms in the winter and cools in the summer. It wasn’t cheap, but I love it!

Where did you get that?

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 15:32

Thats lovely and I dont get out much either!

I dont know if I want something that plugs in and its more clutter on the worktop which Im trying to reduce, my little pot is very small so I sort of tuck it behind the stand mixer. Also its only me that eats butter.

Fantastic idea

Because of this thread I bought the M&S bar of 46% Dominican Republic chocolate, it’s nice @LaurieFairyCake(love your user name).
i also bought the 35 plants salad. It’s tasty.
Both I shall rebuy.

You need to get up to 70-80% cocoa solids as all the others have lots of sugar and usually emulsifiers.
Lindt, Green & Black etc.
