Sugar free June

Who’s in? Refined sugar free June.

So I consume way too much cakes, pastries and cookies etc and I want to kick the sugar habit once and for all!

My plan is to limit my intake of refined sugar to special occasions - and keep it outside of the house. I’m all or nothing when it comes to sugar so if I have it in my cupboards it won’t just be the one cake or cookie I’ll eat- it’ll be the whole batch /packet.

It has such an impact on my weight loss journey. I weigh daily and often find I’m a few pounds heavier after even a few days on a sugar binge. It’s also not great for health in general.

I’ll still eat fruit, honey and no/low sugar dark chocolate. But I don’t want any artificial sweeteners or refined sugar.

Hoping by posting my updates
here it’ll help keep me focused. feel free to join or to quietly lurk and watch my battle in the fight against sugar (I’m not dramatic at all 😆)

I’m 66Kg right now and would love to be 64kg by end of June. I started at 80Kg a couple of years ago. Progress has been slow but steady minus some plateaus.

Did you mean for this to be on the weight loss injections page?

I am already doing no refined sugar/processed food. But with MJ injections too.

Oh no! I meant for it just to be on weight loss haha thanks for pointing this out. I’ll see if I can report it and get MN to move it.

Just me then? 😆 I guess I’ll use it as my public diary lol

so today my plan is to eat chocolate oats which is just oats with a tablespoon of cocoa added in and sweetened with mashed banana.

For dinner I’ll have turkey mince and tortilla.

how did it go today, OP?
I’m jumping on here to say that I had been pretty much refined sugar-free since Easter, bar a few pieces of chocolate, and feeling really good. Yesterday I had two slices of a friend’s birthday cake, I knew I would be having some and thought well that’s fine. It was delicious! BUT! I had the WORST nights sleep! My heart rate was fast, and I couldn’t get to sleep for a couple of hours after getting into bed. Nothing different in what I ate or drank except for the insanely sweet cake. Then felt like crap for a few hours today, just feeling normal now.
So, that will keep me on track, definitely don’t want to feel like that again.

sugar is mad

Gingercar · 02/06/2025 21:06

Going well for me too. I feel so much better without it. I used to eat a lot, and get bad indigestion. Haven’t had any since I stopped. I’ve turned into a grape and Greek yoghurt addict instead!

That’s great, how much sugar did you eat pre-Easter?

At least you enjoyed the cake though! I need to try and bring to memory how bad sugar overloads make me feel next time I’m tempted to go on a sugar binge!

I had a bit of honey in my Greek yoghurt/oat bowl. Didn’t have anything else sweet except blended bananas with unsweetened oat milk but no refined sugar 🎉 didn’t even touch the dark chocolate chips in my baking cupboard lol

Ahh grapes! That reminds me I haven’t had them in ages, I’ll need to order some with my next food shop.

Have you ever frozen them? Think they’re even better frozen especially in warm weather 👌

Before and during Easter I was eating sugar and white bread practically daily, and had quite a lot of wine and cocktails during the holidays, where I would normally have none. The day after I had had silly amounts of profiteroles, pizza, and chocolate, was the point at which I decided to stop. Sugar and alcohol just make me bloated, tired, have dry, red skin and generally all round crappy.

Cutting out white carbs is a big part of it too, I’ll have roast potatoes with a Sunday dinner, and sometimes make the greek yogurt flatbread (like maybe once every couple of weeks), otherwise it’s brown rice, oats, lentils and tons of veg for carbs and fibre.

greek yogurt with a bit of honey is probably my perfect sweet thing now!

Greendiamondbee · 03/06/2025 13:46

I've been doing keto for 28 days now, which I guess is sugar free ish.
I don't know my weight in KG but I started at 9.7 and I'm currently 8.11. Probably stop at 8.7 and keep my maintenance weight at 8.10.

I know i am late tobthe party but i would love to join and start from tomorrow if thats ok?

Sugarfreejune · 03/06/2025 17:53

So good you managed to stop cold turkey like that. I think sugar is bad for my sleep and skin too! I’m absolutely loving brown rice lately. I’ll be having that with some salmon tonight.

welcome @Greendiamondbee and @September20233

My weight in stone is 10stone 7!

I'll join! I had some success coming off sugar in March, managed about a month before getting derailed (birthday/Easter) and have really struggled to get back on the wagon since then. I have to limit processed carbs too or I can't stay off the sweet stuff 😬

AthenaWhite · 03/06/2025 19:21

I am an absolute sugar junkie. It is like a hole that I just can't fill. I gave up alcohol a few years ago and my sugar consumption went up. This is going to be so hard for me so any tips welcome. I am happy with my weight but sugar makes me feel tired and sluggish.

Gingercar · 03/06/2025 19:22

I did about five months of sugar just before lockdown. I loved it. I lost two dress sizes and two stones just by cutting out refined sugar and processed foods. And my peri menopause symptoms went away. I fell off the wagon when my husband was seriously ill in hospital for several weeks, followed by a catalogue of other really stressful situations throughout the following years.
Ive been doing no sugar and healthy eating for two weeks now and am loving it. Im also taking mounjaro, but tbh it’s not having a massive effect on me at this dose. But all the indigestion that I had every day (basically from eating chocolate) has completely disappeared. Im hoping that the mounjaro will keep me on the rails further down the line because I have tons of weight to lose.

I think once you get through the first couple of weeks it gets easier. I have grapes in Greek yoghurt as a treat every day (I love it!) or a banana. Both high sugar fruits, but a damned sight better than a bar of chocolate!

Sugarfreejune · 04/06/2025 22:25

Welcome new joiners!

I had another good low sugar day. The only sweet thing I ate was a hot chocolate I made using pure cacao (sugar free) powder and a few dark chocolate chips and honey.

How are you going on?

Ah so-so! It was my birthday last week and I ate too much sweet things on a city break abroad. I just couldn’t resist trying those yummy croissants and pastries .

I’ve been trying to detox the past few days as my weight had went up by 3 pounds despite all the walking I did while away. The weight has come back down as of this morning. My body really isn’t a fan of refined sugar!

I have a friend coming over tomorrow for a cuppa, so I’m going to get some biccies from Tesco. I’ll eat one or two with her and either give the rest of the packet to her to take with her when she leaves, or bin them!

how is it going for everyone else? Hope you’re all doing better than me lol

I know this is an old thread but I was hoping there might be others who are trying to reduce refined sugar?

I massively cut back on UPF in September, and was doing really well for about 6 weeks. I still had small amounts of sugar, but much less than normal. I also completely cut out artificial sweetener and fizzy drinks. My digestion and sleep were great and I was feeling really positive.

But then my birthday in October derailed it all - I received lots of chocolates and biscuits as gifts, had several meals out and have fallen back into eating sugary UPF crap and drinking gallons of diet drinks again. My digestion is terrible and I’m sleeping badly - I think I’ve noticed this more than usual after having several weeks of improvements.

I’m starting afresh tomorrow - back to eating 3 good meals, only snacking on non-UPF whole foods if I feel genuinely hungry between meals, and only drinking water (will have to battle through the caffeine withdrawal again, but it’s my own fault 😩).

Anyone fancy joining me..?
