If yoi are slim or losing weight: what do you eat on a normal day?

Croissantsfordinner · 19/02/2025 10:38

I am 5ft2 and 11 stones heavy. The heaviest I have been in my whole life.
I need to get back in track with gym and moderate eating, was wondering if you’d like to share an average day pf eating, if you are someone who is careful not to gain weight/stays slim.
Obv I appreciate it also depends on how much movement, metabolism, age etc.
I have a big appetite and usually have big dinners, as well as a couple of take outs a week which together with a sedentary office life, have slowly contributed to my weight gain.

Some of these are hilarious. 🤢 at pilchards and half heads of cauliflower. Some of these people have disordered eating

I'm 5 ft 3 and weigh 9 and a half stone. A typical day for me of eating ...

Bowl of granola/ shredded wheat / weetabix with Greek yogurt and berries or maybe a home made nutrient bomb cookie with yogurt

Sandwich on seeded bread. Today was applewood cheddar and balsamic roasted tomatoes. Bag of crisps

Dinner - rainbow noodles or pasta with feta or tofu or maybe a poke type bowl with veggies/ hummus / rice / sweet potatoes

1 magnum per day!

Hughs · 20/02/2025 15:46

🤢 at shredded wheat and applewood cheddar, both absolutely rank imo!

Funkyslippers · 20/02/2025 15:48

I'm 51, 5'6" & do some form of exercise every day, from cardio fitness class to a 45 mins walk
Typical day foodwise: breakfast: porridge with blueberries, lunch: ham & cheese toastie with salad, snacks: bowl of fruit plus bar of chocolate or slice of cake, dinner: smoked salmon omelette with homemade chips & salad or casserole, mashed potato & veg. 4 x cups of tea, 1 x latte & loads of water, maybe glass of wine

Trolllol · 20/02/2025 15:54

I really don’t think i could exercise if I ate just dinner.

HelenCurlyBrown · 20/02/2025 15:55

So far today, I’ve had a plain omelette at lunchtime. I never eat breakfast and aim to fast for 16 hours daily.

I’ll eat a small dinner later, probably a piece of fish with some veg.

I’m 5’8 and 138 pounds.

I eat sensibly during the week and have whatever I fancy at the weekend.

OfNoOne · 20/02/2025 16:21

I'm 40, weigh 58kg (about 9 stone 2), BMI 21.3, size 10 (occasionally an 8 but that's just vanity sizing imo). I'm not a big eater, never have been, and tend to lose my appetite when stressed rather than comfort eating.

Today I've had:
A fruit and veg smoothie (apple, kiwi, kale, some berries) for breakfast.
Poached eggs on sourdough with hollandaise sauce, avocado and leafy salad for lunch, with a coffee.

Dinner's going to be a homemade veg curry involving peppers, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, sweet potato and either steamed or coconut rice.

I take a multivitamin every day too.

I don't go to a gym but I hike or run twice a week (would like to do it more but have a lot on so twice is the most I can manage just now).

socks1107 · 20/02/2025 16:33

I'm losing weight and currently sit at 13st and 5'4.

Every day I eat
Porridge
Crackers, cheese, fruit, nuts
A dinner with about 500 calories in it of chicken, or pasta, lots of veg

PoppyBaxter · 20/02/2025 16:44

Doloresparton · 20/02/2025 15:20

So true.
After both dc I ditched the leggings after a month and wore clothes with a waist.
Makes you much more aware of your size and shape.
Also because I have chronic back issues exercises to maintain both my pelvic floor and a strong lumbar spine were very necessary.
I've carried these on forever.

It was no fun in the early days after giving birth when dh would ask if I'd done my exercises before getting into bed at night but I'm so thankful he did. They took 10 minutes a day. Totally worth it.

I've always said I have the motivation to keep slim every single day of my life, but if I had 3 stone to lose, I would certainly fail. So I'd rather never have that to deal with.
I don't own scales, but have a very figure hugging size 8 shift dress (which has no give and does up with a zip) that I wore on our wedding night 11 years ago. I try that on every year or so and if there is a slight pull on the hips, I cut back for a week.

This is a bit of an eye opener so far. Those who can skip meals and have a large dinner of whatever you fancy impress me and show how slim people just aren’t that bothered.
I’m losing weight at the moment counting calories but I’m still greedy and obsessed about food. It’s hard..

I think it’s an unhelpful way of thinking to believe that all slim people aren’t bothered about food. I see it all the time on here but that extrapolates to, “I am bothered about food so I can’t be slim”.

Full disclaimer, I have an eating disorder but I am most definitely bothered about food 😂. Even at my sickest I have never forgotten to eat!

I’m currently trying to eat more and at least maintain and today I’ve had:

breakfast: a chopped up apple, banana, full fat Greek yoghurt and a handful of cornflakes for the crunch. This makes a massive bowl full of food. Coffee and a green tea.

snack: a packet of Pom Bears as I suddenly got a salt craving and figured my body must need some. I wanted Hula Hoops but the shop near work didn’t have any.

lunch: sushi from Lidl and a protein coffee.

dinner will be spaghetti bolognaise with grated cheese on top.

I’ve also had another green tea and a lot of water, I love water!

I also love, love, love excersize and need it primarily for my mental health. I do half an hour on the cross trainer before work, walk the dog for about an hour and then 45 mins-1 hour of pole dancing and my weight routine in the evening.

ZenNudist · 20/02/2025 17:26

I'm upper end of healthy BMI 5'3 and 64kg have lost 10kg. Trying to lose but am doing fast 800 in stages so will do a proper 2 week stint of 800 cals per day when I get a clear point in the calendar. At the moment I'm sticking to the principles but not calorie counting. I'm having a bad week because of half term we are staying with family and there are lots of meals out.

For me to lose I need:
No snacks
No alcohol
No sugar
Eat mainly veg plus lean protein
Lower carb
No white pasta, white rice, bread or potatoes

My breakfast is 20g porridge oats 60ml skimmed milk 90ml hot water. Micro 3.5 mins. 100cals. Peppermint tea and a fibre supplement and multivitamin. Or I have one-2 eggs with grilled tomato and mushrooms.

Lunch is a filling bean and veg soup or a salad with some protein like chicken or tuna or a small amount of cheese. Or 2 eggs if in a rush but i dont eat eggs every day. Try to keep to under 300cals

Dinner is lots of veg and a good chunk of protein say grilled fish or 2 chicken drumsticks I'm being careful with oil so use bertolli air fryer spray or the 1 cal sunflower oil spray and brush on the food.

I eat a lot of airfryer roast veg including roasted chickpeas with peri peri salt are delicious

On weekends I skip breakfast and have brunch which is usually egg based. I have discovered frying eggs with very little oil brushed on the pan then grill the top so you get a runny cooked flat egg without the oil. I serve this with hot sauce, spinach, grilled tomato, mushroom cooked in a very small amount of butter, maybe some halloumi 35g fry in brushed on 1cal oil.

I follow the slimming world diet but stick to whole foods as I like snacking and big portions plus I actually enjoy going to group.

breakfast is soy yogurt and tons of fruit or a veggie sausage sandwich

lunch leftover dinner from the night before such as curry and rice, pasta etc all served with a large portion or green veg if no leftovers then a jacket and beans or soup

dinner is curry, chili, pasta, potato salad, burger bowl, kebab bowl, cottage pie or a huge tofu stirfry

I make oil free hummus and sweet potato falafels to snack on with veggie sticks

3/4 coffees with soy milk plus 3ltr of water a day

I do a 5k dog walk every morning and spin 3/4 times a week

my top tip is to meal plan and get an online food shop delivered Sunday morning. I then prep my food on Sunday. Make a cottage pie, a pasta dish and throw a soup in the slow cooker on a Sunday morning. Portion up with some in the fridge and some in the freezer then I just have to boil some green veg on a night to have a healthy home cooked meal.

What are burger and kebab bowls?

Meadowfinch · 20/02/2025 17:57

Today is a typical day......

Breakfast - decaf coffee with s/s milk
Mid morning - a handful of mixed nuts & two tangerines, and another coffee
Lunch - smoked mackerel & potato salad with tomatoes, beetroot, lettuce, cucumber
Supper - mushroom risotto with parmesan & thyme

If I want something sweet after supper, I have fresh pineapple & creme fraiche, or a handful of sultanas

I run 5k twice a week, practice karate, work full time. I cook from scratch and I very rarely drink alcohol. I'm 61, 5'8" and size 10.

gingercat02 · 20/02/2025 18:13

5'9 11 st 6 (would like to be 11st)
Breakfast porridge with frozen berries, seeds, and keifer yog
Lunch salad with protein or soup or leftovers or a pita or sandwich fruit sometimes a yoghurt
Tea (dinner) rice or pasta or boiled potato (wedges or chips occ) with meat or chicken and veg heavy sides
Few snacks biscuit maybe once a week, fruit, crisps maybe once every few weeks
Too much red wine (hence 7lbs to lose)
Only drink coffee or water otherwise

Ethiopianflower · 20/02/2025 18:27

I’m 53, 5ft 11 and 10st9. Typically for breakfast I have a big bowl of yogurt and grapes. Lunch is wholemeal bread with reduced fat hummus and dinner is 2 eggs, cheese, mushrooms and celery. I have 2 bags of meanies (crisps) every day and drink a lot of fluids. I don’t drink alcohol - gives me migraine. Don’t eat sweets or chocolate either - crisps are my downfall - I could live on crisps alone

I don't disagree with eating wholefoods and lots of veg and very little UPF. There is a lot more to it though. I've eaten that way for years and have always done lots of exercise but am still overweight. I am very fit, healthy and strong though - no problem with blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes risk and I don't carry a lot of weight on my middle.

It's very hard to get nutrients right when you are eating much smaller amounts - hence my comment about fibre. Some of people's eating style sound very much like mine but others were subsisting all day on a low fat yogurt and a ham sandwich made with diet bread- not much fibre or good nutrition going on there.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 21/02/2025 09:43

I don't understand "cutting back for a week" either. If you cut back and lose that weight then go back to what you were eating before then surely you just put the weight back on?

We are always being told that permanent weightloss needs to be a lifestyle change not a short term diet.

That doesn't sound like very much food.

I just put that into Nutracheck - wasn't sure of amounts obviously but I put two slices of toast, double portion of full fat houmous, 150g yoghurt, bunch of grapes, 100g cheddar at dinner and meanoes, eggs mushrooms, celery.

Calories: 1354, Fibre 9.4, Protein 72g, Carb 86g. The fibre in particular is a third of what we should be having in a day, and it was only 3.5 portions of fruit/veg.

No.
Perhaps over the course of a year I might gain 2 lbs as a result of Christmas and holidays.
I can cut back for a week, by which I mean maybe forego one snack per day and not have my usual Friday night takeaway, and lose that 2lbs.
My regular day-to-day diet and lifestyle then enables me to maintain that weight ongoing.
This is not a 'diet'. It's basic common sense and sustainable for life.

LoserWinner · 21/02/2025 10:14

5ft 6in, lower end of normal bmi, having changed my lifestyle and relationship with food. I lost six stone after a diagnosis of pre-diabetes three years ago. My weight has been stable for 18 months, and blood sugar now normal.
Today is a pretty typical day.

Black coffee no sugar on waking.

45 min brisk walk.
Lunch: overnight oats with yoghurt, mixed seeds, pomegranate, mixed berries, pistachios.
then two hours in the gym (rowing, elliptical, treadmill + audio book)

40 min brisk walk
Black coffee and a flapjack or similar before evening activity

Aperitif: Glass of Prosecco and a few rice crackers.
Supper: salad - spinach, cucumber, radishes, mixed sprouting seeds, avocado, pomegranate, cress, hazelnuts, raisins, crispy fried onions, feta cheese in a lemon and tahini dressing. Then two tangerines.

Supper is almost always salad of some sort with cheese of fish - I rarely eat meat unless I’m eating out. Chocolate or cake is a very occasional treat.

That's fine in that case if the weight gain is caused by eating a bit more on holiday or at Christmas, and it's great that you can control it like that.

@PoppyBaxter quite! I was thinking the same thing.

Girlintheframe · 21/02/2025 11:52

@Wantitalltogoaway I deliberately have a high carb diet due to the exercise I'm doing at the moment. I'm trying to maintain weight and health whilst also fueling myself for my energy/recovery requirements. I do eat some berries and fruit but my go to really is vegetables.
