Anyone wants to join me in quitting sugar for 30 days to start with?

I have been out of control since we got back from holidays 6 weeks ago. For some reason can't get get inti the mindset of eating healthily for more then 5 days to the point i binge even on dark chocolate. The only way for me is to do 30 days of no sugar , not even dark chocolate and hopefully my mind will rest again. Anyway wants to join me from tomorrow?

Have found a crutch that helps replace choc cravings. Teaspoon of peanut butter with some decent quality cocoa powder sprinkled on top. Smells like chocolate and satisfies....

Day 1 again for me. Learned that the Sober app wipes your previous streak without trace, which is a bit demotivating!

(Also, over 24 hours in to a 36 hour fast. I’ll admit I’m hungry and bored but so far this is the best I’ve managed).

splendiferously · 08/09/2024 19:26

Had a terrible nights sleep. Would usually have sent me to the sugar - have really overeaten savoury food today, but am proud I haven't cracked!

Peae · 08/09/2024 20:00

Well done!

Day 20 or so. My scales are showing no weight loss at all but my clothes all feel looser and people keep commenting that I look slimmer....

Shit scales or some other explanation?

I've been the gym 3 times this past week as well as cutting out all my treats and apparently I'm heavier now than when I started??! I'm hoping its just water retention 🙏

7 days in for me now!

Remember muscles weigh more than fat...

Go by your tape measure. More meaningful than scales.

Hello, I'm jumping on if that's alright, as I decided this weekend to re-read The Sweet Poison Quit Plan and start off on a month without added sugar, as a friend of mine is doing a month without alcohol, so we are buddying up. I've just downloaded the I am sober app, as I think it will be a useful aid.

I broke my sugar addiction eight years ago, having been a real addict for most of my life, but got knocked off course after a year and a half by losing a parent.

I have been thinking about getting back on it for ages, but the prospect of "never" is so daunting, and that's why I've decided on a month - to trick myself into getting back into it!

I am 8 kg overweight, we have a history of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's in the family and it is frankly terrifying what sugar can do. I have an autoimmune disease and when I had cut out sugar before my joints were so much less painful and I had a lot more energy.

QuiteAnEpicFailure · 09/09/2024 13:36

Hi I would like a join you guys if that’s okay, I’m on day 1 of attempting no sugar and alcohol for 30 days. I don’t really drink alcohol day to day so that won’t be too much of a struggle for me but I have the worst sugar addiction and binge eating issues. It was my dd birthday at the weekend and I ate lots of the sweets she was given, then let her think it was ds rather than admit it was me, so as you can see I have absolutely no self control around sugar.
I already do a lot of exercise but my diet is generally awful so I’m quite overweight and struggle with extreme fatigue which makes life hard.

Anyway half way through day 1, no need to worry about left over birthday cake because I ate it all yesterday 🙈. I’m off work today and would normally be smashing some biscuits just now to perk me up from the post lunch tiredness before I go and pick the kids up but I’m just feeling like a zombie today instead! Well done everyone who has managed to stick this for any length of time, it’s really difficult!

PaminaMozart · 09/09/2024 16:24

For those who are new here or have missed it - here is a great video about beating sugar addiction :

Dr. Becky has lots of short talks about sugar and they are both informative and motivational.

Peae · 09/09/2024 17:38

Stay strong @QuiteAnEpicFailure .

I have managed another day sugar-free, genuinely not tempted.

UCDLA · 09/09/2024 18:39

I broke my streak as well, had a can of coke on Saturday. Force of habit, just grabbed it when paying for petrol and then realised after I'd drank it! I didn't actually have any cravings for it, but it was just like a reflex. No cravings yesterday or today though so I'm just pretending the coke didn't happen 😂 I'm happy with myself because my children have a few half eaten sweet things in the cupboard we've been rationing, and I keep seeing them but not feeling desperate to eat them. This is amazing for me!

Peae · 09/09/2024 19:10

I can really identify with that. The feeling of being in control, rather than out of control, feels pretty great.

orangetulipsinbloom · 10/09/2024 17:58

I really have to thank @Bananamuffins123 and the rest of you for starting this thread, mutual support and helping to keep my resolve. A very stressful day at work and many temptations with a range of sweets and cakes people had brought from home. A colleague had generously brought a bag of Swedish Gefflar cinnamon rolls and normally I would have helped myself to one, two or probably more... not today!

ManchesterGirl2 · 10/09/2024 19:40

How do you lot handle the mid-afternoon slump at work? I desperately wanted a biscuit today.

mikado1 · 10/09/2024 20:06

ManchesterGirl2 I don't snack at all, it's the only way for me anyway. Three really decent meals but no snacks. Now I did so much walking today (17k steps by lunchtime) as I was without a car so had to go about my business on foot, that I was absolutely starving so I had two lunches 😆
If you do need something, what about an apple and a handful of nuts?

QuiteAnEpicFailure · 10/09/2024 22:56

Well full disclosure my day 1 yesterday lasted until about 4pm when i ate a lot of cake 🤦‍♀️

So today was day 1/30 again and I did manage to get through it without eating any sugar. I did eat a lot of food and had a very unsatisfying binge on oatcakes and butter in the afternoon. I’m trying to get through a couple of weeks not stressing about what I’m eating as long as it’s not sugar so I’m not going to beat myself up about over eating at this stage.

I went for my run this evening and struggling again with a lot of tendon pain around my feet and ankles which I’ve been experiencing for a couple of years, at first I believed it was just because I’ve put on weight and my body couldn’t cope with running but the last few months I’ve also developed tennis elbow in both elbows which is telling me that there is something else going on, I’ve become convinced it’s to do with my awful diet/sugar consumption. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this and noticed improvement from cutting out sugar?

Fruit
Carrots

I don't really feel qualified to answer questions, other than I am feeling really good, have much more energy and sleeping much better. Whether that's the sugar or fasting, I'm not sure. But, I'm still here, reading people's posts, and still not eating sugar.

Peae · 11/09/2024 08:11

Also, I've realised I'm not concerned if I eat sugar once a week. I was never going to quit sugar for life and I would like to be able to eat an ice cream on a day out, or have a pudding after a meal if there's one I really like.

What I have cut out are the chocolate bars at 2pm, the grazing on office cakes and 'treats' that people dump at the end of our desk and the packets of biscuits on an evening or weekend. I've lost nearly half a stone since quitting sugar (and upping the fasting) and I feel great.

QuiteAnEpicFailure · 11/09/2024 09:38

@Peae that’s how I feel. In all honestly if I could just eat cake/dessert/chocolate 2-3 times a week like a ‘normal’ person then I’d be happy and I’m sure my body could cope. My problem is that I just hoover up anything sugary in huge amounts all day long if I have the opportunity. I struggle to resist it and can’t stop once I’ve started so maybe it has to be all or nothing to me but I’m hoping if I could just go 30 days without it then I can at least reset my habits a bit!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 11/09/2024 10:02

That's great @Peae - I'm not sure that is a goal for me at the moment - I used to smoke and was always very all or nothing, so I think sugar is like that to me, but I'm just taking it step by step for the first month.

I know a number of people in my life sugar programme that have immediate relief from joint pain from ditching flour and sugar.

Be ready for that sugar brain lying and telling you need something now and you'll only have a little bit and then it keeps calling for more. Tell yourself it will pass, do something else first. Bit by bit you will get there. And leave yourself off on the oatcake and butter Binge, sometimes we need those in between things just to keep us in the race. Keep going.

Wow, well done 👏
I think most of us here are the same, we can't moderate like 'normal people. We can't have two biscuits and say that hit the spot, because it actually just awakened a need to eat the whole pack and then some!! None is easier than a few for me.

splendiferously · 11/09/2024 13:06

I definitely know I can't moderate, not sure what the long term plan is but I'm on day 11 now, have introduced small portions of fruit (did have a week off everything) and I do feel better already - more energy, clearer skin. I had so much temptation put in front of me yesterday but I managed to resist and really want to at least do 2 weeks of nothing at all.. some days have been harder than others, but right now am not majorly craving sweet stuff. Reading all your tips and updates has really helped!

PaminaMozart · 11/09/2024 14:16

I think the idea of having sweet stuff 2-3 times a week 'like normal people' is unrealistic when you are still in the 'trying to kick sugar' phase. Once you gave kicked the addiction, you will no longer WANT so much sugar...... and you WILL find it easier to have sugar occasionally without slipping back into old habits.

I'm currently on holiday in a place where temptations abound. I had a croissant for breakfast, an icecream in the afternoon, and I'll have a cocktail and/or a glass of wine at dinner. I can do this because I KNOW that I'll get back in the saddle as soon as i get home.

You'll get there too if you KOKO 😊
