I have been out of control since we got back from holidays 6 weeks ago. For some reason can't get get inti the mindset of eating healthily for more then 5 days to the point i binge even on dark chocolate. The only way for me is to do 30 days of no sugar , not even dark chocolate and hopefully my mind will rest again. Anyway wants to join me from tomorrow?

I've cut down & then cut out sugar since I had pneumonia last winter. I've lost 4 stone 4 pounds up to now. I vape, so I have swapped my juice to a custard type to help my cravings.

Bananamuffins123 · 26/08/2024 09:58

How is everyone doing after the weekend? I have absolutely no motivation and finding it really difficult this time . Have had some 85% chocolate over the weekend, nearly the whole bar since Friday . No other sweet treats or even fruit . The stress in my life at the moment doesn't help

What help are you getting with the stresses in our life, both practical and emotional? It must be very challenging to try and make a drastic lifestyle change if you are fighting battles on many fronts.

On the other hand, you KNOW that you will ultimately feel so much better, healthier, and less worried about potential future health complications if you bite the bullet and beat the sugar addiction.

For me, being virtually sugar free became a way of life, and after the first couple of weeks it became surprisingly easy - partly because there was no longer any sugar in my blood to feed the cravings for more sugar.

In practical terms, I focused on exercising and eating really delicious savory foods - salads and vegetables flavoured with a range of uplifting flavours:
Herbs such as parsley, basil, dill, mint, fresh coriander
Ginger and garlic
Punchy salad dressings (vinaigrette with a teaspoon of mustard or horseradish, or based around lemon juice and EVOO)

Plus eating a fair bit of protein (chicken, fish, especiallysalmon and tuna, plus eggs, again flavoured to make them interesting by adding:
A teaspoon of curry paste
Asian marinades (soy sauce, fish sauce, lemon juice, ginger, garlic, chilli)
Homemade pesto
Tomato and roast red pepper sauce with garlic and lots of basil
Or just a bunch of herbs and chilli sauce a d lots of lemon juice.

Intermittent fasting became natural, but I always have boiled eggs (= protein bombs) and fruit in the fridge in case I feel hungry between brunch and dinner.

I seem to have written a novel, but if you do nothing else, do watch this short video:

Stay strong @orangetulipsinbloom easier to keep going than fall off the wagon and have to start over again!

Thank you! I did eat two pieces of lovely (not too sweet) home-baked cake because it would have been very awkward to decline and my friend went to a lot of effort to host. I do crave a bit of sweetness now that I am back home but I don't feel the same greediness I usually do and I know I will not give in. Perhaps I have weaned myself off a bit. Tomorrow is a new day!

TeamPolin · 26/08/2024 22:50

@orangetulipsinbloom I had a slight slip today at a picnic and noshed a fairy cake. Was a very small one homemade one with the tiniest blob of icing, but all the same, I'm disappointed with myself. I know from experience that trying to merely cut down sugar doesn't work for me. I need to be disciplined and have zero tolerance to make progress. Back on the wagon tomorrow....

Morning, I haven't done well at all up to now, but I'm relaunching today!

UmCachorroVerde · 27/08/2024 18:11

I downloaded the I am Sober app a PP recommended and as a keen Duolingo-er I like a good long streak. Fall off the bandwagon yesterday after a five day streak but started again today. It would be good to make it to seven days without sugar.

Newstarts1 · 29/08/2024 19:24

I had my cakey celebration today and had too much cake so I feel quite queasy. Definitely ready to start sugar free September!

Peae · 29/08/2024 19:50

Hello thread. I quit sugar last week after DP recommended an episode of You and Yours about over-eating. I've been hanging on to a pretty worrying sugar habit for some years now. Increasingly I'm getting worried about the links with Type 2 Diabetes and dementia.

For some reason, something clicked and I'm now on day 7 of what I call no "junk sugar". The added bonus of no chocolate or biscuits is that my Intermittent Fasting has suddenly become a lot easier. I'm currently managing OMAD, and looking to ADF as recommended by Megan Ramos in Intermittent Fasting For Women for weight-loss.

I am loving feeling in control and that I'm actually doing something to safeguard my health.

Edit - meant to say thank you for the Sober app recommendation!

UmCachorroVerde · 30/08/2024 17:15

@Peae I also feel that intermittent fasting is easier without sugar. I am not terrible strict with it but aim for 16:8 (no or v late breakfast) and find it much easier when cutting out sugar of my diet. I am not overweight but want to maintain my weight, improve my digestion (sugar seems to make me windy) and make healthier food choices overall.

Thanks for mentioning the link between diet and dementia. Just read this article - a good motivation to keep my sugar-free streak! www.healthline.com/health/alzheimers/sugar-and-alzheimers

How have you been getting on?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/08/2024 17:27

@UmCachorroVerde oh dreadfully 🤦‍♀️ I just can't seem to stop eating! And now it's the weekend! I have great plans for a strict strict though.

I find weekends hardest - temptations seem to come along more often! Best of luck, you can do it!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/08/2024 17:47

@UmCachorroVerde I know, annoyingly I did 6 full weeks completely sugar free from June until I went on holiday.... but haven't herb able to get back on it since then.

Bananamuffins123 · 30/08/2024 19:36

I have been totally out of control this week

I'm so sorry...... what happened?

Peae · 30/08/2024 19:42

It’s really interesting. I am currently off the sugar and not even missing it. But only a fortnight ago I was eating a packet of biscuits a day. What makes the difference? I don’t know.

PaminaMozart · 30/08/2024 20:08

What makes the difference?

I think it's getting over the first week or two of being sugarfree. It's almost like clearing one's system of a drug.

Peae · 30/08/2024 20:10

i agree, once you’re eating sugar you want to eat more and vice versa, but what switches you over? I’m not sure.

PaminaMozart · 30/08/2024 20:15

Maybe you might find Dr Becky's video helpful - see one of my posts above. She has a lot of useful advice.

TrtseHkpr · 30/08/2024 20:51

I'm in. Lost 2 stones this year before I went on holiday but since returning it's creeping back on. Good luck!

ManchesterGirl2 · 30/08/2024 21:21

I've started cutting out sugar this for the last week so thought I'd join the thread for ideas.

I think I'm a bit slimmer already.

I'm trying to be fairly relaxed about it, so my approach is to remove cakes, sugary chocolates, sugary pastries, added-sugar drinks etc except for around 1 per week, or if I'm doing long intense exercise and feel i need the sugar. My near-daily, sometimes multiple times daily, consumption, is so not necessary! I'm not gonna worry about fruits, a little bit of added sugar in meals etc.

I've definitely been noticing cravings at certain times, and certain social situations where I find it hard to avoid sugar, it's kind of interesting to sit back and watch. I'm hoping that no sugar for a while might reset those cravings and help me learn ways to control my consumption in sugary social situations.

I'm intrigued by your "junk sugar" concept, how would you define that?

splendiferously · 30/08/2024 22:01

Belatedly joining if that's ok. Sugar is my nemesis, was doing so well with eating lower processed and then holidays have sent me backwards and today I ate 5 French fancy cakes Confused. Ambitiously starting on a weekend but no time like the present!

TeamPolin · 31/08/2024 09:03

I fell of the wagon and had a bad day yesterday. Determined to get back to it today.
