I drink far too much wine - if it's in the house, I'll drink it.....

Inspired by SheikYerbouti's thread I've decided to publically declare (well on MN ) that I'm going to seriously cut back on the demon drink!

I grew up in a home where the only time we had alcohol in the house was at Christmas, consequently I only drank when I went out. Since getting married, ten years ago, I have steadily put on weight and I am sure that the majority of it is due to the fact that DH and I drink at home.

So, my MN buddies, I pledge that from now on I will only drink when there is a special occassion (anniversary etc.), we have guests over (probably once a month), or we go out (rarely). I'm not sure that my timing is the best with this one as DH is away on business next week and normally I would have opened some wine, "to keep me company" .

DH will be under strict instructions not to bring any wine into the house unless we have guests and there's no way I'll drink his beer - I can't stand the stuff.

So, anyone with me? I'm not sure that I can do this alone.

You can do it LilRed ! I gave up drinking Mon-Thurs at teh start of the year (having also done it before christmas too but fell of the wagon over christmas !) and cut down on weekend drinking.

Its really hard to begin with but just as drinking often is habit forming so is NOT drinking often. Once you get into the habit of it, its easier. Also, because I now drink less generally, less gives me a headache so its not always as pleasant as it wasm which all helps me cut down.

Also most of my weight loss (a stone since Jan) I can put down mostly to the running and less wine.

Good luck !

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 09:32

Wow! Wheely - well done! I'm getting back onto the Couch to 5km thread and plan to run tonight. I just want to lose a stone, but mainly feel better.

Sounds good to me LilRedWG

I love a glass of wine myself but it's doing me no good. I don't believe I drink all that much as a rule - generally a bottle or two at the weekend to myself - but dh is virtually teetotal and he constantly remarks on it.

When he goes away I open a bottle

If I have had a bad day at work I open a bottle

If I can think of the smallest reason I open a bottle

Funnily enough there is a bottle in the fridge atm that dh was given by a colleague. I will not open it as I'm sure that as soon as I do I will get the "lush" and "old soak" comments and I won't give him the satisfaction so I drank vodka at the weekend instead

So OK, let's keep the vino to a respectable minimum

SheikYerbouti · 08/04/2008 09:34

I'm with you

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 09:35

Tiger - you sound just like me, but DH enjoys his beer as much as I enjoy the wine.

Im there..........I drink at least a bottle a night and more at the weekends and I feel crap.

Start lighter life counselling tomorrow. Have tried to start Lighter Life myself a number of times and always failed so go for the firts counselling session and then hopefully I will be all fired up!

I so want to look and feel better! Have 4 stone to lose!

dizzydixies · 08/04/2008 09:51

well done, as soon as am no longer pg and after I finish bf I'm right there with you too

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 10:07

dizzydixies · 08/04/2008 10:10

oh, ok then but just the one, with a straw and not sharing it either!!!!!

mummypoppins I did lighter lift and lost 2.5 stone which was great - I had a fantastic group and found it easier once I got past the first week - it suits some and not others but good for you, give it a shot, drink LOADS of water and let me know how you get on

dizzydixies · 08/04/2008 10:10

lift life

isheisnthe · 08/04/2008 10:44

Can I join in too please - defo drink too much wine, going to the bottle bank is getting embarrassing!

Usually about a bottle a night since I split with Exp, and I am sick of the head ache - if its in the house its usually opened and down my next once the boys are in bed!

Interestingly enough tramps used to be called winos - not alcoholics, I seriously think wine is a demon drink!!!!

mummypoppins · 08/04/2008 10:59

dd I will....Its the first week I find the the hardest so I am really going to pull all the stops out in the next week to make it work. TBH if I lost 3 stone I would be a healthy BMI and so would be happy. Going on holiday on 4th July so I hope to do it by then.

have you kept it off ?

I am a wino isheisnthe there is no coubt. We have a house full of spirits and beer and I never touch them but Wine I cannot leave alone. I wonder why ?

Enid · 08/04/2008 11:03

dont buy it or have it in the house

isheisnthe · 08/04/2008 11:15

thats the plan enid! mummypoppins - thats totally the same as me! Its like my treat after a stessy day -but not EVERY day can be that stressful

Gonna do my best.............

madamez · 08/04/2008 11:17

I'll join in, am cutting down too (as scared about my blood pressure and less alcohol will help).

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/04/2008 11:20

I'm off on holiday next week with various other mums, and therefore no wine will be impossible. But I'd like to join in when I'm back - I struggle to cut it out and would really like to be able to get it under control.

ClairePO · 08/04/2008 11:22

Can I join in with this please? I drink too much wine, so from now on I'm saying only if we're out/on holiday etc. No wine in the house. Will help me lose weight I hope and also hopefully help me conceive.

Enid · 08/04/2008 11:22

dont drink before 7pm

and drink three glasses of water over the course of the evening

dizzydixies · 08/04/2008 11:26

mummypoppins not exactly, am pg with dc3!!! will probably give it another whirl once finished bf!

your holiday is a brilliant incentive!!! am SURE you can do it

toadette · 08/04/2008 11:42

I'm in too, would love to keep the wine consumption to weekends only.

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 11:50

Blimey - I am so relieved that I'm not alone in this. I've shown DH the thread and he said he's going to do it too

OP posts:
isheisnthe · 08/04/2008 11:57
