I drink far too much wine - if it's in the house, I'll drink it.....

Inspired by SheikYerbouti's thread I've decided to publically declare (well on MN ) that I'm going to seriously cut back on the demon drink!

I grew up in a home where the only time we had alcohol in the house was at Christmas, consequently I only drank when I went out. Since getting married, ten years ago, I have steadily put on weight and I am sure that the majority of it is due to the fact that DH and I drink at home.

So, my MN buddies, I pledge that from now on I will only drink when there is a special occassion (anniversary etc.), we have guests over (probably once a month), or we go out (rarely). I'm not sure that my timing is the best with this one as DH is away on business next week and normally I would have opened some wine, "to keep me company" .

DH will be under strict instructions not to bring any wine into the house unless we have guests and there's no way I'll drink his beer - I can't stand the stuff.

So, anyone with me? I'm not sure that I can do this alone.

My boyfriend bought a bottle of wine last night

LilRedWG · 09/04/2008 12:31

None for me. I wanted a glass or two but we had none in the house so it was tough!

None for me. And no wine tonight or tomorrow night hopefully, but will have a few glasses on Saturday though.

isheisnthe · 09/04/2008 13:33

I was counting on the none in the house thing until he turned up - perhaps I really am a true wino

LilRedWG · 09/04/2008 13:39

If DH had brought wine home, I would have drunk it.

I was working till ten pm last night and STILL drank a bottle and a bit!. Had bad day.

mummypoppins · 09/04/2008 13:54

me too Monkey butler and have failed miserably on diet. I hate myself today and I am so tired!

monkeybutler · 09/04/2008 14:13

I had a job interview and was knocked back then husband had a bad day at work and was upset when he came home at 5.30pm. i then worked 6 till 10pm and was given a shitty job to do. Shifting heavy boxes in a filthy dark warehouse. there are plenty of men who are far stronger than me who couldve done it and it felt like boss gave me job to piss me off. It underlined the fact why I wont to leave and made the rejection even worse. Am tired too.

LilRedWG · 09/04/2008 16:34

Sorry you've both had shitty days. Just remember, tomorrow is a new one. I know it sounds trite, but I don't mean it too; what I mean is - the past (ie today and yesterday) is the past - you cannot change it, so don't worry about it.

Start again tomorrow.

LilRedWG · 11/04/2008 10:28

I'm off to the pub tonight and staying at a friend's on Saturday, so mucho wine will be consumed.

I must say that I've slept much better the past few nights though!

I had a lunch awards ceremony thing yesterday so had a few glasses but still abstaining at home. We're away to Devon for the weekend and I shall indulge myself, we're going away to avoid being at home for the edd for the one we lost so I figure I am entitled a few drinks.

Hope everyone is feeling better for their abstinence and that the bad days some of us have had lessen.

Wow am so pleased to find this thread! I was beginning to think I had real serious wine problems (which I probably do!!) but it is so reassuring to see that other people drink upto & a bit over a bottle per night. I really hate myself the next morning when I wake up not only feeling a bit hungover but feeling very fat as when I drink wine it gives me the munchies. I know it's not rocket science but why can I just not buy the stuff or drink so much of it?
I would so love just to be able to have no wine Sun - Thurs. What are your tips?

gymgym10 · 11/04/2008 20:49

Bump all you peeps need your support - please post x

LilRedWG · 12/04/2008 09:24

Just do not go near the wine when you are shopping. I find it so much easier not to drink when there is no wine in the house. I get that, "Oo, I fancy a glass of wine" feeling, but as there's none around I just make a cup of decaf tea instead or pour a glass of Ribena.

If you just want to drink Friday and Saturday evenings, just buy enough for those two nights - if you only buy one bottle and drink it all Friday night, then you can't have any Saturday. It really can be as simple as that.

Good luck!

How is everyone doing?

LilRedWG · 18/04/2008 11:59

Have drunk wine every night this week as DH has been away on business. Will do better next week

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 22/04/2008 12:44

Funny, LilRed - I have the opposite problem. When DH is away I hardly drink at all but since he has stopped travelling I don't have the willpower to say no when he suggests opening a bottle...

..but we have stopped buying it as our grocery bills were completely out of control and wine was one easy thing to cut out. We will still get a couple of bottles at the weekend but won't have any during the week. If it is in the house we know we will drink it (funnily enough we have a lot of 'proper' wine laid down, some of which is now easily ready to drink, and neither of us has a problem with not drinking that )

LilRedWG · 28/04/2008 16:21

Far too much wine consumed over the past week again. We have a glass or two of red left, which I am going to finish off tonight and then I'm going to get DH to promise me that if he buys wine he won't tell me. He can stash it in the garage or something - out of sight and all that...

How's everyone else doing?

BecauseImWorthIt · 28/04/2008 16:24

Well I came back from my week away and promptly went down with a horrible bout of IBS, which laid me low for 4 days last week. Drinking wine was the last thing on my mind! Drank on Thurs-Sun once I was better.

Would like a drink this evening, but I know that if we start on Monday there's no chance of being alcohol free for the rest of the week!

Still, the upside of being poorly is that I lost half a stone!!!

That has really galvanised me to get the diet back on track as well. It's nice to know that I only have to lose a stone as opposed to a stone and half.

toadette · 28/04/2008 16:28

Hi, I did really well the first week and then fell back into my old routine of glass or two once dc's in bed. The week I stayed off the wine (and associated snacking!) I lost 3.5lbs! I had already decided to start another "not on a school night" week from today so I'm with you.

loopylou6 · 28/04/2008 16:52

Hi there ladies. I will be joining you from tomorrow, tonight im gonna finish the bottle of wine i have in the house.

LilRedWG · 28/04/2008 18:59

Good weight loss toadette!

I'm finishing off the wine tonight and then trying to be good

OP posts:
toadette · 29/04/2008 13:31

Is everyone ready to start tonight then? I was alcohol-free last night but only because I had depleted all stock of red wine in the house over the weekend

unhappy · 29/04/2008 13:41

There is a good thread on health re dependent drinkers - very supportive
