Starting low carb two week induction type thing - tomorrow - anyone in??

Have just bought and read the India Knight book and have been reinspired to restart my low carb ways - Anyone care to join me?

I do know this way of eating suits me, I have done it before, I don't get hungry after the first few days and I do lose weight. I was "sort of" doing this for a couple of weeks before easter and lost about 4lbs, felt good but fell off the wagon over the weekend with easter eggs, wine, simnel cake etc!

Am planning a 2 week induction type event starting tomorrow morning (I am loathe to call it a "diet") to get me back into the swing of things. It would be good to have a buddy or two.

Hello lilacclaire!
How are we all getting on? I'm on a sort of semi-induction and not feeling hungry which is good. two or three pounds have gone and certainly feel less podgy.

SugarBird · 15/04/2008 19:20

Hi lilacclaire. It's amazing how quickly you feel better for getting rid of the flour, spuds, sugar etc.

We're about to have roast beef with lots of veggies and caulimash. I make gravy with a little brown rice flour - well, it's only a bit!

Even though I'm through induction I don't crave carbs the way I used to - definitely the best way I've found to eat well and maintain a reasonable weight

lilacclaire · 16/04/2008 00:02

Can anyone shed some light on 'net' carbs?
Is it an urban myth or can you eat some carbs as long as they don't turn to sugar, ie porridge oats?

OrmIrian · 16/04/2008 15:15

Hello. I'm not sure I know what you mean by net carbs, lilacclaire. I think the idea is that some sorts of carbohydrate don't affect the blood sugar as quickly as others. Porridge oats being a good example. But to a certain extent that is more of a low-GI issue than a low-carb one. For low-carb I think the terms is used for low-carb products such as Atkins bars where most of the carbohydate can be discounted because it's sweetener such as Splenda rather than sugar. But those sort of things aren't ideal for normal use IME. Low-carb diets try to resctrict the consumption of all carbohydrates to a low level and slowly increase them to a point where the weight loss slows and stops regardless of the GI rating of a food. You might find that oats are OK at a later stage of the diet but not at the beginning.

Personally I do my own version of lc induction that includes things Atkins doesn't allow. And I do add in porridge oats with my breakfast yoghurt after 2 or 3 weeks. And brown rice, lentils etc. But it's not strictly Atkins, or even really low-carb but a sort of lc/low-GI hybrid. But it works for me.

I am so glad this thread is here. DH and I are getting back on lc again next week. I've been running and have lost weight but my eating habits are appalling and I know I'm on a wing and a prayer atm . Dh is giving up fags (again) so needs to do something about his weight too.

Net carbs are to do with Atkins and food labelling in the uk/usa.
I think it's that usa labels don't list fibre separately whereas in the uk the carb count list sugars and fibre separately so you just look at the carb value listed and go off that.

SugarBird · 16/04/2008 19:36

I think net carbs are total carb count minus fibre, which is an indigestible carbohydrate and is therefore simply excreted by your body (typing with copy of Atkins to hand!) As fibre is not digested, it can't be converted to glucose and therefore the theory is that it doesn't count.

While that makes sense when you're talking about proper food, I also think the Atkins company uses this to sell their 'low-carb' junk food, which is best avoided at all costs!

Hope that helps

Hi everyone...can I join you? I need to lose about 5 stone which I put on while pregnant. 10 months on and I think it's time I did something about it I did one week of induction, lost about 7 lbs and then fell off the wagon big style. So, having hauled myself back onto said wagon, this is my 3rd day of induction and I am determined to stick with it this time.

oggsfrog · 17/04/2008 07:04

Welcome to the wagon piggypiggy

lilacclaire · 17/04/2008 08:26

Hmmm, thanks everyone, I think im also going to be a hybred between Low GI and Low Carb.

How is everyone getting on then:
Yesterday I had porridge oats with milk for breakfast
Tuna steak with broccolli and cauliflower for lunch,
Salad with cold meat and cheese for dinner and a bowl of home made lentil soup for supper.
I snacked on sunflower seeds (a lot).

Anyone else wish to share.

I have been on Atkins since November and lost 2.5 stone, I treat myself to a carb weekend every so often but have found recently that I am obsessed with carbs again. I am really worried I will put on all the weight again if I don't get my willpower back. As far as exercise goes I have joined a dance team for over 25's, it is great fun but had to do a competition on Sunday where we came in second ( there were only two teams )but fun anyway. Motivation please.

PiggyPiggy · 17/04/2008 10:49

Thanks for the welcome oggsfrog

Prettypurpledaisy - 2.5 stone, that's brilliant! Well done! Don't give in. You are doing so well. I feel much more motivated just reading that you have lost so much weight doing this. Onwards friends!

prettypurpledaisy · 17/04/2008 11:34

It has taken time and I had two weeks off at Christmas but I feel great and have got in a size 12 for the first time in years. Keep going piggy it is worth it and who needs bread and pasta anyway.

Katisha · 17/04/2008 12:28

Someone tell me to go to the gym...

lilacclaire · 17/04/2008 12:39

Katisha - GET TO THE GYM

lilacclaire · 17/04/2008 12:41

Prettypurpledaisy, just remember how awful you felt when you were 2.5 stone heavier compared to just now. And remember summer is coming up which means more flesh exposed !

Katisha · 17/04/2008 12:56

All right all right don't nag I'm going...in a minute...

mrsmalumbas · 17/04/2008 13:15

Hello all, glad to see some more people here! I'm still here and still hanging on although I have not lost a single ounce after my initial 7 pound loss - still sticking with it pretty much apart from a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend and a few raspberries! However despite no further weight loss I sort of feel better in myself and my blood pressure is down. I do need to exercise I know, but can't go to a gym as too expensive - will have to dig out my old handweights and do my Davina DVD. Also must drink more water!!

I'm firmly ensconced on the wagon this time around. The Last Carb Saloon is but a memory.

Yesterday;
Breakfast - couple of macadamia nuts (in a rush).
Lunch - egg mayonnaise scooped from the pot with rashers of crispy bacon (bought while out).
Tea - Grilled salmon fillet with sweet chilli dipping sauce, watercress, broccoli, cauli.
Lots of water (almost 3 litres), 1 x decaf coffeee w/ splenda and soya milk, 1 x chai with cream.

Today;
Breakfast - 3 eggs scrambled.
Lunch - Celery with paté
Tea will be 2 lamb chops w/ broccoli, leeks and cauli (will make a quick cheese sauce with cream, mustard, lemon juice and cheese)
Lots of water (2lt already), 1 x decaff coffee.

Did you do the gym Kat?(still want to call you crotchety )

oggsfrog · 17/04/2008 14:49

LilacClaire, judging by your photo if you lose any weight you'll slip down the back of the cushions and will never be seen again .

OrmIrian · 17/04/2008 15:03

katisha - get going woman! It's far easier than dieting

Katisha · 17/04/2008 15:22

I've been!
Thing is, Orm, I need to do gym AND diet. One or the other doesn't seem to work!

noddyholder · 17/04/2008 15:25

I have been low carbing for about 10 days now and have lost 5lbs only although I haven't given up alcohol yet! Will start alcohol free today as it does slow down weight loss.Am going snack crazy though as I have pmt and keep looking at bad things in th cupboard but haven't succumbed!

oggsfrog · 17/04/2008 17:51

Hi Noddy
I've been tempted in the past to buy a lockable box, store all the biscuits/crisps/snacky stuff in there and give dh the key .

Katisha · 17/04/2008 17:57

Hey Ogg have you done your Helen exercise video?

oggsfrog · 17/04/2008 18:21

Nah, that was from the library - went back ages ago.
I've gone all retro. I picked up a centuries old Beverley Callard one from a charity shop which is remarkably good (and boy does it make you ache), but my knee is buggered at mo. I need to build up to it again slowly .
