Weight gain after bowel movement

Obeseandashamed · 04/02/2024 10:44

I know this is a bit of a weird one but stick with it please 😅🤣 Admittedly I have weird weighing habits that can sometimes be a little addictive. I have noticed that I weigh more after having a bowel movement/passing urine. Is this normal? If so, why? Surely you would expect it to be the other way around if you've not eaten or drank anything in between weighing, going to the loo and then weighing again?

P.s I'm only 0.7 away from no longer being obese on the bmi scale 🎉

Yes, you 100% should weigh less. Dodgy scales? Do you need to step on once to calibrate and then step on again and take the second measurement? Does sound a little obsessive, hope you're ok!

@Joyonacake Yes perhaps dodgy scales. Maybe I should buy a new set as weigh 3 times each time I weigh to make sure it's correct but it still happens.

I know my weighing habits are strange but I find it helpful. If I've had a bad eating or busy day, I don't weigh until the day after so I can go without weighing if I need to. I also can go without weighing if I'm away from home but on an ordinary day, I tend to weigh first thing in the morning, again after I've been to the loo (if I've not had breakfast yet) and then again in the evening before dinner and before I go to bed. It helps me to keep on track.

That sounds a little abnormal to me. Do you have any mental health concerns? X

SleepingisanArt · 04/02/2024 11:11

Also your weight fluctuates (naturally) during the day which is why the advice is to not weigh more than once a day and always at the same time (for a more like-for-like comparison). You do sound a bit unhinged about it! (I'm losing weight and weigh no more than once a week - sometimes it's everyv2 weeks!)

No not particularly, I can sometimes be an overthinker and anxious but that comes from a lack of self confidence rather than anything else. My weighing habits sound much weirder than they are. For example if I see myself weighing say 2lbs more on a night than I did in the morning, it doesn't bother me as I know I've eaten, drank 1.5l of water etc. It's just a weird habit I have and I know it's weird but I'm not overly concerned by it as I know I can go without weighing when I want/need to if that makes sense? X

Do you weigh directly before and after? Weight changes during the day, I only generally weigh first thing when I get up after a wee but in the past I would weigh before and after a bowel movement and mostly it would drop but sometimes not

Itisnearlyspring · 04/02/2024 12:01

Are you wearing more clothes or before/after exercise may affect amount of water in the body.

Yes so for example, I would weigh first thing in the morning after a wee. Then I'd potter around for a bit and go back to have a poo. If I've not had breakfast at that point I'd usually weigh again and when doing that weigh, I realise that I'd often have 'put on' a pound or so even though more had left my body than had gone in. I didn't understand the logic of it!

Hi
Isn't this something to do with the liver releasing enzymes?
I'm sure I read that somewhere. So once you are up and have started your day and drunk a coffee/ tea you will weigh more even if you pee or poop.

No I always weigh naked. 😬 although I suppose pottering around the house might count as movement/exercise.

Yes it's not Linear losing weight, it baffles me too. I don't have bowel movements that often, like once a week but yes it defies logic, you have to look at the trend though.

Yes and you probably have something to drink as well which may add more weight than you think

Spinet · 04/02/2024 12:09

I think weighing yourself once a day is fine and if you mark it on a graph you can see the trend. Before/after a poo is poorly thinking, sorry. Those 2 pounds are not linked to your worthwhileness!!

GonnaNeedABiggerGoat · 04/02/2024 12:17

Not dodgy scales at all.

Happens to me all the time!

Maybe yours are dodgy too.

If you're weighing yourself, sitting down and doing a poo, and immediately weighing yourself again, of course you should lose weight (even if the amount of negligible , you shouldn't put on!) If there are other variables like more time is passing in between, or eating/drinking, obviously this doesn't apply.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 04/02/2024 14:35

Test your scales.

Find something heavy in the house that will fit on the scales and weigh it. Wait a few minutes and weigh it again. It should be identical. If I weigh myself on my scales, then wait a few minutes and weigh myself again, the second reading won't be the same as the first reading, even though I have not eaten or drunk anything or gone to the loo or changed what I am wearing. My scales also seem less accurate if the weather is very cold and the room they are in has not warmed up yet or if another member of the family has just weighed themselves.

I think you'd do better just weighing yourself once a day, preferably before breakfast and after you've been to the loo.

Gemz1010 · 04/02/2024 14:38

Also check your scales are on a level floor in the same place

Mudflaps · 04/02/2024 14:40

You strip naked to weigh yourself, a couple of times a day??

How else to get an accurate weight? I do mine first thing before showering so I'm naked already

LittleMissCantBeArsed · 04/02/2024 15:43

If my scales show a weird weight gain it's usually cause they need charging. But yeah I sometimes weigh before and after a morning poo. Just for fun. Grin

Sometimes I weigh, poo, weigh, run, weigh. Again, just for fun.

As long as you aren’t doing it at weight watchers, that’s fine 🤣

Nameof · 08/02/2025 13:35

well I guess we are both weird bc I do it too and found your post by googling the same question. I weigh myself in the morning and shortly after taking a poo and it always increases. I also notice I become a bit bloated after a morning poo too. There’s something that goes on physiologically within the body to increase weight and there has to be some definitive answer to it. Anyways I have nothing productive to say other than you’re not alone nor are you weird and need therapy.

CosyAutumn · 08/02/2025 22:30

I weighed myself tonight with full pjs, slippers and a dressing gown on. Wondered what my weight would be without them, so weighed again, and the scales remained exactly the same. They're meant to measure to the nearest quarter of a pound but they're obviously not as accurate as advertised.

But you can't change the laws of physics.

That happens to me, that's how I found this message.
No dodgy scales, no drink, no change in clothes.
