Need to lose 1 stone? Gather around....

Not sure if this will get any clicks, but I wondered if there are folks who need to lose about a stone or a bit this way or that who might want some accountability?

BTW When I say "need to lose a stone" this means basically a stone to get to your own, individual target (which could be a random number, a random BMI point, just anything).

For me - 1 stone off takes me to weight before conceiving Baby 1, and 1.2 stone off takes me to my lightest adult weight and a very comfy size 10-12 as opposed to a size 12-14. I have added motivation that a 40th birthday tails off 2024 for me, so I've got a deadline.

My downfall? Carbs. Salty carbs. My body absolutely magically loses if I cut out rice, pasta and potatoes. And yet, alas - it specifically is those that I crave.

Anyone want a loose accountability thread?

That’s excellent progress!

I like how some of us are posting a little bit about a good meal here and there. I’ll add my dinner tonight - pan fried loads of little pieces of salmon with an entire head of finely minced garlic (we are garlic people) - served up with 5 kinds of crunchy veggies including baby corn broccoli carrots beans - and I had that with extra salmon and the rest of my folks had steamed rice to soak up all the garlicky omega 3 😂

Good stuff everyone! I’ve skipped breakfast today and had my youngest child’s leftovers for lunch, so am having pesto and ravioli for dinner! I’ve snacked on grapes and had a mere two mini eggs 😂👍🏻 so feeling quite virtuous - I just haven’t really felt that hungry today so I’ve taken advantage of it 😊👍🏻 Someone posted a while back that actually it can be helpful to weigh daily to take into account fluctuations and see a general down trend so I might even try that for a couple of weeks and see, I was going to weigh weekly but might be fun to try daily and see if it’s more/less motivating!

Weighed in this morning at 147.4lbs, which is about another lb off and more than I was expecting. Have been good so far today but the stress of life/kids is getting to me tonight and I'm ready to give up dry January! Going to go for a decent walk when DH is home to try and take my mind off it.

Well done! I actually really like the alco free beers if I’m having a curry. There are some great ones for beer/lager although still looking for a great alco free wine!

froidIci · 26/01/2024 19:14

DH and I would be interested in decent alcohol free beers particularly to accompany spicy curries. We barely drink - as in me maybe two drinks a year and him at best maybe 1 beer a month - but we would like to replace even those with some alco frees. DH says he dislikes Becks and tends to like craft beers/ales so any ideas for alco free versions?

Brew Dog does one. I also like and prefer a citrus pale ale called Ghost Ship. That’s the best I’ve tried but there are so many to choose from and they can mostly be bought in single bottles to see which one you like best without committing.

wheresmyshoe · 26/01/2024 20:52

I like Erdinger alcohol free, it somehow feels as if it's doing me good.

JustFrustrated · 26/01/2024 21:28

I have 100% fallen off the wagon today.

And will be off tomorrow too. So ugh.

Alcohol free beer highly recommend Brew Dog do not recommend Budweiser!

Sunday is a new day, @JustFrustrated ! I know it’s unorthodox but I’m a big fan of a Sunday for a reset day: healthy food, a good long walk and fresh air, rest…

GallstoneGertie2024 · 27/01/2024 07:32

Yesterday got very busy very fast. Stressy texts back and forth all day and into the evening. Stayed within IF window. Gave some of binge/less healthy food to adult DS when we met up in the afternoon. (He has actual willpower.)

Weighed this morning. I have five pounds to lose to get to my first half-stone. So it's not as bad a gain as I had originally thought. Aim to be well into better habits by mid Feb, in time for Lent. Maybe most of that five pounds will be gone by then.

froidIci · 27/01/2024 08:00

That sounds like a sensible and SMART plan of micro goals!

Lost a bit more today and now overall loss since starting all this is at 2 kgs. The combination of approaches working I think are 1) eating window of 12-7; (2) veg and protein no grains and (3) no evening snacking. These are all “habits” I am hoping to carry forward anyway…

Next goal is 3 more kgs off to get to weight when I conceived DC2 four years ago. We have a holiday back to my family in Asia for Easter where it is HOT in April and I am really hoping to get rid of not just this 3 kgs but the entire stone by then (which would be another 2 kgs after the next 3 kgs).

it’s the weekend so good luck everyone - no more birthday parties this weekend for me so no more masses of cake to tempt me but friends over tonight for pizza making and I will need to make
an exception to the carbs rule. Never mind.

I'm down to 10st 10lbs despite working away. I'm very pleased as I expected to go up.
This is a slow process from me but I have hit a half stone loss in six months.

coolcahuna · 27/01/2024 08:29

I'm in! I'm calorie counting and trying to stay under 1500 a day. I've been tracking my calories burnt daily on my Garmin and it's really not that many! 1700 on average sometimes 1900.

So realistically I probably need to drop to 1200 calories a day but I know I'll be really hungry so going to stick to 1500 and do more steps/exercise.

I used saxenda for a while and it does work to curb hunger but I feel I really need to sort out the root issues without that medication. Which are basically stress and boredom eating!

lisam78 · 27/01/2024 09:06

Hi everyone, this is my first update in 3 weeks, and I am still 10st 10lbs. Not lost a pound. I'm so frustrated. I've been eating well, cut out all unhealthy snacks, had no alcohol, plenty if sleep, min 10000 steps every day. I'm still 10lbs off my target weight. It'll take forever at this rate. I'll try writing down my food for the day - any other advice welcome!

Passthepickle · 27/01/2024 09:42

Lisam78 it’s so much harder when you are near your target. I know very little about calorie counting and just apply a generally healthy and three days light approach. Yesterday involved half a mug of baileys, a small cake and a bit of pizza for tea. Today therefore has to be a light day so no brekky, salad for lunch and as little for tea as I can do either a little portion of something we all eat or a few pieces of fruit with nuts or baked veggies etc. I should go to bed a bit hungry. This really works for me. It takes little time or headspace and a day that goes wrong is fine but it just pushes back my light day. I suppose it’s my version of three days of restricted calories - just sharing in case it helps.

Hi all 👋🏼 I'm new to the thread but reading your posts has been really helpful!

I would like to lose a stone and a half. I'm aiming for a pound a week.
Started on Jan 2nd and my weight was 11st 10 and I'd like to get to 10st 3. I've lost 5 pounds already sticking to roughly 1500 calories a week.
I'm weighing myself every morning if I remember so I can see the weight loss trend over a week.
So far it's been ok, calorie counting has not been a chore this time. What's helped is writing each pound in a checklist on my notes and ticking it off, also having incremental non-food treats, so for half a stone I'll get a new water bottle. When I reach a stone I will get my hair highlighted!

😄 Who knew an adult sticker chart was all I needed to succeed in life 😂

throughgrittedteeth · 27/01/2024 09:50

@coolcahuna I've had an Apple Watch for 4 years and this is the first time I've seen that there's a total calories burnt thing 🤯 I know it's probably not 100% accurate but it's so helpful, thanks for the tip!

Daffodilsandsunshine · 27/01/2024 10:08

Yesterday I received a text message from my GP that a recent blood test shows I'm prediabetic. I'm hoping to reverse it by losing weight - 1.5 stone. I do an exercise class 2 times a week already and walk to work each day. However the recent loss of diabetic DF has made me comfort eat and I know I need to make urgent changes. I also probably mistake thirst for hunger (especially as any exercise seems to make me feel more hungry - probably thirsty!)

My nibble craving times are after exercise, when I'm cooking dinner, and evenings. Got a big water bottle out of the cupboard to keep to hand and started a crafting hobby in the evenings to take my mind off snacking whilst watching TV!

On day 2! 💪

froidIci · 27/01/2024 10:14

For pre diabetic (I say this as a south Asian woman with a diabetic mum and very wary…) have they given you any advice on diet and things to cut down on? I am myself not prediabetic at all but I for example, take great care over unrefined carbohydrates and carbohydrates more generally. Hope you can find some advice from someone in case you wish for some extra support.!!

Morning all! It's really motivating reading through everyone's posts.

I'm weighing daily to follow the average/trend but have lost 4lbs so far which I'm really pleased with. I'm really enjoying the gym still too, been 3x this week and planning a big walk with the dog tomorrow (it's his birthday Grin)

Trying to let myself enjoy food today but sensibly, so I've had 2 x low fat sausages and a scrambled egg for breakfast (instead of a sausage sandwich) and DH has made some "healthy pizzas" for tea later using a recipe he found on instagram which are approx. 550 calories. Hopefully they turn out nice!

We're having the in laws over for a roast tomorrow so my plan is to eat light through the day and then just fully enjoy the roast without worrying about calories. Balance and all that!

shearwater2 · 27/01/2024 10:54

Have a posh dinner out tonight and hotel breakfast tomorrow. Have had brunch (scrambled eggs on a thin bagel, stir fried broccoli left over from last night) and will try to just have drinks until dinner now.

Passthepickle · 27/01/2024 11:15

Enjoy your posh dinner. I love a posh dinner:)

Weekend weigh in shows 12.6 so another couple of pounds down and exactly one stone above the heaviest weight at which I could claim to be within my bmi (I know lots don’t like it as a measurement but having been two stone lighter than that weight a decade ago it is definitely reasonable). My new target is to be in my BMI two months from today.

froidIci · 27/01/2024 13:22

So pleased that everyone is doing well, establishing mindful good habits and conscious choices whilst also allowing the odd event/special do. Without balance it becomes as strict “diet” and not a whole life change.

tonight we are making pizzas from scratch with kids and friends kids. Everything chopped up and dough proving. I am torn between whether to have an ommelette with all the pizza toppings just no dough or to just have a pizza….

Unsure. Wheat generally makes me constipated and bloated so there’s more than one reason to not eat the pizza and enjoy all toppings in an omelette but….. PIZZA! :/

@froidIci the GP sent me a link to a diabetes website to follow - it looks essentially low carb diet like you said. Currently after a large meal of any pasta, bread, rice, potatoes and I fall asleep for an hour!

I'm going to sunday lunch with a friend tomorrow and have told her about my unexpected low carb/prediabetic dietary needs. She's been so very helpful (her DSis is diabetic - I didn't realise) and so instead of the carbs she will make me a fab salad to go with her main dish. She's such a good cook I can't wait! 😁

asquideatingdough · 27/01/2024 18:56

Hello everyone- I'd like to join. I'm currently 10 stone 9, would like to be 9 1/2 stone again. I was always in the 9 1/2 stone territory (I'm 5'3" but athletic and looked slim at that weight, wore size 8-10) but a combination of a divorce, perimenopause and working from home 3m from my fridge made me gain a stone and I can't get it off.

In the past I could lose just by cutting out treats, second helpings etc and exercising more. Now I can't lose weight even though I no longer eat bread, cheese, fried foods, pudding etc. I have tried low carb and IF but I just kept compensating unconsciously in terms of calories. I'm now trying just to stick to 1450-1550 calories per day, in two meals (lunch and dinner) with no snacks.

I find the hardest thing is to avoid snacks from 3-6pm, from when my kids come home to when I stop work to start making dinner. I am not really hungry, just bored, irritable, tense etc. I snack on "healthy" things like nuts or cottage cheese but the calories really add up. At least I think that's the problem.

I would really just like to lose a couple of inches around my hips and waist as that is where the excess weight has settled. I have always been pear shaped but now I am 33-28-41 and my clothes are always just too tight around there, which makes me feel miserable and self-conscious. At 9 1/2 stone I was 26.5" at my waist and 38" at my hips and had no problem fitting in my clothes. My friends have told me just to buy larger sizes but I'm not ready to do that (nor can I afford to!)

Very welcome!

It's a bit of an eye opener for me to be honest. If I'm averagely burning 1800 cals and the recommended for a woman is 2000 cals, it's a bit of a worry. Now I need to log everything and still to 1500.
