Sugar free January

ShitIforgothelves · 01/01/2024 17:51

Would anyone like to join me doing this?
I'm eating carbs still and having sweetener in coffee but no cakes, biscuits, chocolate or puddings for a month. I haven't got any meals out or special occasions planned so that should help.

What PP said @ShitIforgothelves One moment in one day doesn't erase all the effort around it, there's still the rest of the month to go for building on the success so far

RunningAndSinging · 10/01/2024 13:20

Sugar binge here this morning - the left over Christmas chocolates and mince pies were calling. So annoyed with myself but need to draw a line and listen to all the advice on here about how it is only one moment in the month and to keep going. It is hard as an all or nothing sort of person but I mustn't let it be the reason to stop.

Scousebloke · 10/01/2024 17:30

@ShitIforgothelves and @RunningAndSinging so you fell off the wagon eh ?. The key now is do you say oh shit i failed, i cant do it ? Or do you say, oh shit i had a bad few hours but im going to redouble my efforts and stop eating crap. You both know it has to be the latter x

ShitIforgothelves · 10/01/2024 20:19

I'm actually OK about it. Done another circuits class tonight, had a good day of eating and lots of water.
Last night I thought about how I hadn't even liked the chocolate, I'd eaten for emotional reasons, boredom, the thrill.pf it, etc etc.
I used to binge eat and over the past year I've learnt so much about why I binged and ways to stop.

RunningAndSinging · 11/01/2024 07:09

I got through the rest of the day fine and also reflected on how sick I felt after eating the chocolate. New day, new resolve 🙂

Tiredanddistracted · 11/01/2024 22:04

Really healthy attitude, @ShitIforgothelves. At the risk of sounding patronising, well done . I hope I'm as sensible when I inevitably stumble.

ShitIforgothelves · 11/01/2024 22:19

Thank you, not patronising at all! X

A good day fir me yesterday - it helps to be busy working and not have any chocolate left in the cupboard!

Longlazyday · 12/01/2024 21:09

Day 12 - toppled off the wagon. Clamouring back on … and begin again!

Alohapotato · 12/01/2024 23:20

2 months off sugar and low carb and today I ate a full cadbury chocolate bar, cookies, crisps, skittles and a bag of maltesers .. 😭

Starting NO SUGAR tomorrow .. again..

RunningAndSinging · 13/01/2024 07:09

2 months is great Alohapotato. Especially with Christmas in there. Good luck for getting back on it today.

Do you all have sugar in the house for partners or kids? I have topped up my DD’s snack supply yesterday trying to get things that I am not so keen on. But really if sugar is so bad we should be a sugar free household. I think we would have a mutiny here if we tried.

maybein2022 · 13/01/2024 08:22

Still going here although I have had the odd bit of coconut sugar in coffee (given up sweeteners) and also the odd homemade brownie or muffin- I am trying to get my UPF intake as low as possible so have been making healthier versions myself for the kids, and sometimes have one. What’s so interesting though as I have no compulsion to binge on homemade stuff- this was explained really well on the Dr Chatterjee x Dr Chris podcast and it’s been eye opening. So whilst I’m not 100% sugar free, this approach is working for me. Having to bake something if I want some king sweet, or defrost it (if I’ve made a batch) really slows down the whole process of just grabbing something out of the cupboard and then following it up with 3 more.

I do know though that I’m lucky to have time to be doing baking etc.

I’ve also not had Diet Coke etc since 31st December and no sweeteners in coffee etc since 7th Jan, and this seems to have had an amazing effect.

Tiredanddistracted · 13/01/2024 09:36

Still off sugar and upf, but started to have a few cravings this last few days or so. I think they're nore based on convenience than actually wanting the food. Back at work, due an inspection, so busy so my brain us programmed to look for quick options for food. So far, I'm holding out.

Iheartmysmart · 13/01/2024 10:04

I know it’s a bit late but can I join please? I am a total sugar addict! I lost my little dog back in October resulting in my already poor eating habits getting much worse and I’m not doing my usual 5k walks. This has resulted in a weight gain of over a stone in the last 4 months! I’m really short so it’s very obvious.

Yesterday I ate a bar of Galaxy, nearly a whole pack of biscuits and fish fingers and chips. That was it. This can’t go on!

MsGoodenough · 13/01/2024 10:04

I can't believe I'm actually still managing it! Feeling a lot better for it as well. Sticking to just quitting sugar as I know limiting myself too much will make me more likely to give up.

MsGoodenough · 13/01/2024 10:05

Hello Iheart! Yes never too late to start! I recommend telling lots of people you are doing it as it makes it harder to cheat!!

BillieJ · 13/01/2024 23:42

I started this even though I don't eat sugary food every day, I am constantly snacking, and I can easily go through a bottle of wine every weekend. Just finished one week with no refined flour (no pasta or bread) and no sugar (even fruit). Am also limiting rice and potatoes, so my plate is an average serving of protein and a lot of salad or veg.

I can manage without puddings, cakes, pastries and even bread and crackers without too much trouble. Missing fruit and wine. I've developed a bad habit of snacking on fruit all day to replace the cake I used to have with coffee, biscuits with a cup of tea etc.

I need to keep to it though because over the last five years, my weight has crept up, and for the first time in my life, my BMI is out of the normal range.

MsGoodenough · 14/01/2024 11:10

I have failed today. Contemplating the massive pile of Sunday morning marking (teacher here) pushed me to the leftover mince pies... Determined not to let one slip up ruin things though. Onwards!

Oh God, same with the marking. I did all my assessments yesterday and it was the worst day of my life. I stuck to healthy eating, but a bowl of Greek yoghurt and raspberries really doesn't scratch the itch in the same way a biscoff cornetto does.

Scousebloke · 14/01/2024 15:26

Still no cakes, puddings, biscuits, chocolates oor sweets in 2024. Cakes are my downfall. Im at my granddaughters 3rd birthday party and there are loads of delicious looking cakes. Not gonna cave though

inappropriateportioncontrol · 14/01/2024 15:28

FlowersFlowers For @MsGoodenough and@Tiredanddistracted I don't know how teachers do it, bless you both.
mince pies are so addictive, one is never enough for me.

inappropriateportioncontrol · 14/01/2024 15:35

@BillieJ I've been listening to Michael Moseley and berries are much recommended for their health benefits.

RunningAndSinging · 14/01/2024 15:41

Children’s birthday parties used to be my nemesis. My kids are older now so I don’t go to many. The key is to be able to say no thank you when people offer you cake etc. I found that hard as it felt like I wasn’t being polite but actually no one cares as much as I think they do about what I eat.

BillieJ · 14/01/2024 15:54

I think, for me, once I'm past January, I need to just stop snacking full stop. I will be re-introducing fruit, but I'm going to restrict it to mealtimes. Also, Friday night wine!

I need to shift the weight, and then I might go back to Michael Moseley's 5:2 plan for maintenance.

RunningAndSinging · 14/01/2024 16:36

I have been wobbling again over the weekend and intend to keep trying with the no sugar thing for the moment. Once I feel that is under control no snacks is another really simple and effective strategy. Have a look at the no s diet @BillieJ .

I am reading a new book (I fact I think I have had an early delivery it wasn’t due out until 18th Jan). It is How to eat (and still lose weight) by Andrew Jenkinson. It really explains why fructose in particular and sugar/refined carbs in general disrupt our feedback mechanisms for maintaining weight. Also omega 6 from vegetable oil. It should be so straightforward (to stay a healthy weight) and taken care of by our hunger and metabolism but ultra processed food is undermining all of that.
