Sugar free January

ShitIforgothelves · 01/01/2024 17:51

Would anyone like to join me doing this?
I'm eating carbs still and having sweetener in coffee but no cakes, biscuits, chocolate or puddings for a month. I haven't got any meals out or special occasions planned so that should help.

Thank you @spookehtooth !

I made it through day one. Temptations at work and home but I did fine. Quite a bit of afternoon snacking on cheese and toast but no sugar.

That's great!!!

waistchallenge · 03/01/2024 07:25

I had some difficult news yesterday and was suddenly tempted to buy some milk chocolate in Home Bargains but I remembered this thread and put them back and got some Brazil nuts instead.

RunningAndSinging · 03/01/2024 07:43

Sorry you had some bad news. Well done for diverting to Brazil nuts - it is so much harder in stressful moments.

I have a day off today so am intending to go shopping for some healthy food and ‘de-Christmas’ the house a bit.

spookehtooth · 03/01/2024 15:00

One of the lessons I've learnt, from doing new things that are challenging, is to be relaxed about a setback if it happens and focus on the progress.
So if, for example, a chocolate bar was eaten on Jan 15th focus on the 14 days of success and the potential for scoring 30/31. Even if its a few more, always focus on the achievement the most

Tiredanddistracted · 03/01/2024 15:45

I'm finding it weirdly easy so far actually. I think the hardest thing has been having to find cooking hacks to avoid sugar in sauces etc. No headaches or anything, but I'm still eating fruit so maybe that's helped.

I'm focusing on avoiding UPF etc, and a natural consequence of that is going for full fat Greek yoghurt instead of fat free, olive oil instead of pre made salad dressing and full fat cheese instead of reduced. So perhaps the fat and protein is filling me up so I don't miss it?

I've even lost a couple of lbs - not the objective, but I'll take it!

ShitIforgothelves · 03/01/2024 15:47

I'm not being super strict. Still fruit, honey and sweetener in tea and coffee.
Currently eating cheese and oatcakes. Yum!

I'm doing ok with it too. My DH is a massive sugar addict, eats loads of biscuits cakes, chocolate bars - he exercises a lot so he's actually slim and trim though I'm sure he's not doing his body any good. My point is that the house is full of all this stuff so I have a lot of practice in avoiding these things. I'm also doing Dry January so the only sugar I'm having is in fruit and whatever's in bread and dairy.

Scousebloke · 03/01/2024 17:00

Im gonna follow this thread but not post as i am a bloke and it may piss some off. Im borderline type 2 diabetes and clode to going over the threshold. Tried something similar this time last year and went 7 months with no cakes, chocolate, sweets etc. Gonna try and make it permanent this time. Good luck everyone.

SpongeBlobSquareFace · 03/01/2024 18:58

Why would it piss anyone off @Scousebloke ?
We are all in the same boat.
I fell off the wagon and consumed a leftover mince pie and then some crisps and 2 jammy dodgers. Not good at all.

Scousebloke · 03/01/2024 19:36

Hi spongebob. I just thought, having read other threads, that some on mumsnet feel that women csnt have anything of their own without men intruding or "gegging in"

Tiredanddistracted · 03/01/2024 19:50

Welcome, @Scousebloke. Really not a problem. Men eat sugar too!

Scousebloke · 03/01/2024 19:57

Thanks tiredanddistracted.. Im really gonna try and stay off cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc. 3 days in and doing well. My wife and stepdaughter are just tucking in to cherry bakewell and custard. Patting myself on the back for not giving in to the temptation.

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 03/01/2024 20:07

Joining you!

Had to finish the stollen on new year's day but no sugar since then. Bought some yoghurt to have with fruit for a sweet fix.

I did it in 2022 for only a few weeks and my appetite decreased and I felt great. It's the first week I find tricky. And I need to stay away from the bakery!

waistchallenge · 03/01/2024 20:36

I think I'm going to track my progress in terms of days out of 31. I was late to this so, for example, I might be on 1 sugar-free day vs. 2 sugar consumed days. Then I'll try and make the rest sugar-free days if possible, that's the goal anyway.

maybein2022 · 03/01/2024 20:48

@waistchallenge sorry about your news and such good willpower putting back the chocolate.

Sounds like everyone is doing well! I am on day 3 and so far so good, still having fruit (in moderation) and also using Splenda tablets in hot drinks just until they are finished.

Day 3 of no diet drinks too, and that has been hard but I know it’s for the good!

Have been having an apple with some nuts and peanut butter (the no sugar one) for ‘dessert’ in the evening which I’ve enjoyed!

maybein2022 · 03/01/2024 20:51

@Tiredanddistracted we have also been focusing on cutting right down on UPF as a family (Christmas aside!) for a good few months and it does definitely fill you up more eating ‘whole’ foods. It definitely does also take careful planning but it is definitely worth it and so far my toddler has had zero UPF in these first three days of Jan (can’t say the same about my older kids so I’m not all smug!).

ShitIforgothelves · 03/01/2024 21:32

You are very welcome to my thread scousebloke! I'm borderline diabetic too. My kids keep offering me chocolate. Not helpful!

RunningAndSinging · 03/01/2024 21:34

Day 2 complete. I have a cupboard full of healthy food and no sugar today (apart from the glaze on the leftover Christmas ham which I am not counting as a fail). I have eaten more crisps than I should today but am putting that down to sugar cravings in the early days.

Scousebloke · 03/01/2024 23:56

Thanks @ShitIforgothelves

Bobbi730 · 04/01/2024 00:10

I'll join you although Im late to the party. Been finishing off all the Christmas snacks first.
I did it before and the first few weeks were tough then I suddenly realised that I could walk past a chocolate cake and feel no cravings at all.
I was quite strict as I'm not good at moderation. No sugar at all, no bread/white rice etc.
I felt amazing. I slept better than ever before, I felt well, I lost weight, my skin was clear and people kept telling me that I looked really well.
Unfortunately I fell off the wagon.
Excited to do it again. 😀

ReTrainTheBrain · 04/01/2024 00:14

I'll join! Starting tomorrow...

iloveyoghurt · 04/01/2024 17:04

Can i join please? I stayed sugar free from the 27th of December, but then had lots of biscuits and dark chocolate yesterday . I am really annoyed with myself. Hopefully checking in will help me stay on track. I started a thread 30 days sugar free last year and it really helped me to rest and stay on track. I don't put sugar in drinks or have cakes, sweet bakery foods anyway, but chocolate is the problem and Christmas treats didn't help.

RunningAndSinging · 04/01/2024 17:31

Today is going alright. I have had a bit of a headache this afternoon. I am quite hungry and snacking on cheese today, which I think is better than crisps.

maybein2022 · 04/01/2024 20:12

Today has been good for me- I did have baked beans at dinner which do have sugar in but I’m saying I’m still on track as they’re a rare occurrence in my meal plan and don’t fall under sweets/chocolate/cakes etc.
