Do tall people weigh more than they look?

casablanca123 · 01/12/2023 08:26

I'm a 6'2 tall girl, weighing around 15 stone 4 and I won't say I'm overweight and certainly people don't think so as well. People often get very surprised at how much I weigh and sometimes say something like, "Really, you don't look like you weigh more than 12".

Do tall people carry weight really well?

Well healthy weights increase depending on how tall you are and people (I am guessing) know roughly what is a good weight for them and don't immediately translate that into how much extra it would be for someone taller?

MilkChocolateCookie · 01/12/2023 08:31

I think it's hard for a short person to imagine weighing over 15 stone and still being a healthy weight.

Also, sorry to be harsh, but you are actually overweight according to the BMI scale at your current height/weight.

burnoutbabe · 01/12/2023 08:33

I am
5 10 and healthy weight is 11-13 stone -huge variation!
I have gone from 13 to 11.8 and I am definitely thinner, though nothing hugely noticeable, just thinner all over.

So yes when taller you can weigh quite a bit more before you look "fat". You'll just look bigger all over.

burnoutbabe · 01/12/2023 08:35

I also can't imagine ever being a clothes size at 5 10 less than a 14. That seems impossible just due to bones being in the way.

But long tall sally does do size 8 etc so it must be possible.

pregnantmum36 · 01/12/2023 08:35

Yes definitely. I'm very tall and my friends always look shocked whenever I've mentioned what weight I am over the years (and been slimmer than most). X

Gherkingreen · 01/12/2023 08:37

As a taller woman (5ft11) with a small chest and waist (I carry any weight in my thighs/bum) I think we carry weight differently than shorter people as there's more surface area to share the load, but how you look depends on your body's proportions I think, and how you dress.
I'm late 40s and 11.5 stone and if I wear a skirt or wide legged trousers, fitted at the waist, with a fitted top, I look very slim as my wider bit is covered. If I wore skinny jeans and a baggy top, no doubt I'd look bigger.

Houseplanter · 01/12/2023 08:41

I'm 5'9

I look best about 10.7. Over 11 I start looking lumpy and my thighs and bum are disproportionately large making clothes difficult.

Well, yeah. According to BMI, I'm overweight.

But I'm a regular in my gym and I'm very much in shape. So, I don't think I'm overweight at all. The scale doesn't take things like muscle mass into consideration

I would say so. I’m tall for British standards and have always been heavier than I look. But genuinely, if I hold my wrist next to my shorter friends tiny, dainty wrist it looks like my bone alone is double the size.

Abergale · 01/12/2023 09:22

Yes. Im slim. I’m 5 foot 9 and weigh about 9.5/10 stone and people are always really shocked and say they thought I’d weigh about 8. If I actually weighed 8 my bmi would be about 16!

Everycompanyisafuckup · 01/12/2023 09:23

Yes i think so, i look slim at 13st and get comments on my lovely figure. I dont start looking noticeably fat until over 15st.

Menora · 01/12/2023 10:19

You can use other measures to assess your composition like height to waist ratio or body fat calculator (US navy version).

For me I am overweight on a scale/BMI but as it’s mostly on my bum and thighs and some of it is muscles, I fair a lot better on other ways to measure yourself than just BMI. I’m technically overweight but have exactly the right height/waist ratio and according to the US navy body fat calculator I am also at the top end of normal there too for body fat

muscle takes up far less room than fat so someone who has heavy leg muscles will be visibly slimmer than someone the same weight who is carrying more body fat

BridgetRandomfuck · 01/12/2023 10:37

Yes, I'm 5'9" and have always weighed a couple of stone heavier than my shorter friends, who are usually surprised when I tell them how much I weigh or my clothes size (12/14). Currently 10.5 stone which gives me a BMI of 22. I think when you're taller the weight gets distributed better and it's easy to creep up after xmas or something - reached 11.5 stone in January last year and didn't look much different and my clothes still fitted. But hated feeling flabby.

MattDamon · 01/12/2023 11:24

I think it depends on your frame. I am tall but have a small build so I look chubby if I am carrying any excess weight.

Yeah I'm built like I should be hefting sacks of something about
A relative in the paper was recently described as "giant with spade like hands" GrinBlush
Yes he's male but I just carried on that sort of build, my mum was too. 5ft 10 and broad shoulders, hourglass but wide

I'm 5'10, weigh just under 11 stone and am size 14, I have quite a wide frame and even have a thigh gap, you have to be quite a narrow frame to be a smaller size.

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 13:13

I think shorter people don’t really understand you need to scale up. I’m not that tall (5ft 10) & people who are 5ft 4 or so often say “when i’m 10 stone I don’t look skinny, how come you do?” or “I look fat as a size 12 but you don’t”.

I do have a narrow/small frame though shoe size 5.5 & very skinny wrists & fingers & so many people think i’m much lighter than I actually am! 😆

I’m 5 ft 9 and a size 10. Don’t think I look boney at all.

Yeah. My friend's dd is 25. 5'11" and a small size 8. She's just really narrow framed. She's slender but has D cups so not super skinny. Just slim.

burnoutbabe · 01/12/2023 13:24

sorry, i didn't mean looking boney, i just mean my bones and frame (ribcage etc) are such that i can't imagine fitting into a smaller sized clothes.

but i am size 7-8 feet too (at 5 10) so a bigger frame than potentially other tall women.

FinallyFinalGirl · 01/12/2023 13:26

Isn't it something like five pounds for every inch?

I'm nine and a half stone at 5' 10" and a size 12. Even when I was a stone heavier I was still a size 12!

Shmithecat2 · 01/12/2023 13:28

Yes. I'm 6'2 and a size 12/14. No one ever believes what my weight is.

Elastica23 · 01/12/2023 13:33

I'm 12st 3lbs and 5'7" and a size 12 in clothes. People think I'm about 11 stone. I'd like to be 11 stone - getting closer, slowly!

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 13:34

that’s quite a normal shoe size for a tall women, used to work in a shoe shop!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 01/12/2023 13:36

Well, yes, we do, since there's physically more of us!

Weight and size depends on bone structure though, same as everyone else! I'm 5'10, weigh 9 and a half stone and am a size 10ish ( 35-26-37). I look chunky over 10 and a half stone, but for someone with smaller dimensions, that would look chunky and someone naturally larger framed, that would look scrawny!
