Hi - I've just got back from holiday where I felt fat and frumpy and I hate all the photos of me. I weighed myself and I'm the heaviest I've ever been and need to lose 3 stone.

I'm 50 years old now and it's not as easy as it used to be when I could just lose it with barely any effort. I'm also bad at sticking to diets and I'm overwhelmed with the amount I need to lose and the fact that if I do it properly (i.e without crash dieting) it will probably take me about 8 months to get to where I want to be.

I was looking for a thread on here for women trying to lose weight at a similar age but can't find one. Is there on and if not does anyone fancy joining me?

I would swap out the oats for breakfast and have protein… I like eggs or smoked fish with avocado and cherry tomatoes. Add some carbs or fat to you prawn salad…. ( that dish is never going to fill you up) - maybe some sweet potato. Snack
in the afternoon could be Greek yoghurt with berries or nuts. I’m going to guess that you have 2 or 300 hundred more calories in the bank at least on top of your 1200 unless you only have a very little to lose. I have quite a bit more because I have 3 stone to lose but I’m fairly active.

HierarchyOfMugs · 03/09/2023 15:40

Thanks @Divebar2021 that website suggests I increase it to 1800 which feels much more do-able. It also tells me I should have a lot more protein, which is handy!

Majorityofthree23 · 04/09/2023 09:33

The protein target is working really well for me (though slightly worried that a target of 1800 scares me.. years of slimming programming. 1000 seemed a lot in the 80's/90's)
Away on holiday this week with very unsettled dogs so while steps are high sleep is low and my body is craving carbs. Going to do what I can this week and get fully back on it on Saturday. Possible major op coming up so I feel a healthy approach leading up to it can only be beneficial.

HierarchyOfMugs · 04/09/2023 13:06

I'm struggling with my protein target, tbh. The website @Divebar2021 recommends told me to eat 135g of protein a day. Today I've planned 3 scrambled eggs & 50g smoked salmon then a 200g steak. That's apparently only 84g of protein!
I normally eat a mostly vegetarian diet. How do I eat that much protein without eating meat twice a day?
Looking on the BBC website for high protein veggie meals, eg, they seem to have ~20g of protein per serving.

I'd like to join!

I'm 57 and would like to lose about 4 stone. I've been logging my cals on MFP and have lost about 7lbs.

I've always battled with my weight. About 15 years ago I lost 4.5 stone with WW which has gone back on. I'm now post menopausal (not treated) and have an underactive thyroid which is being managed by the GP and my bloods have been coming back in normal range.

Exercise wise I have a very active border collie which forces me to walk! I have an ebike OK it's not as much exercise as a normal bike but I do get around on it, though I get nervous in the dark and don't like the cold so it tends to go into storage in the winter! I have a couple of complaints preventing me from exercising fully though one at least should be better in the next few months. I have osteoarthritis in both knees, it's generally OK in that I'm mobile and don't need painkillers but it gives me gip when I bend my knees which I find difficult in gym classes. I do still go but I don't do burpees etc just march on the spot etc instead. 3 months ago, I broke my shoulder. It's healed but still stiff and painful and I struggle with full movement, so can't eg lift my arm above my head. I'm under physio for this. I love swimming but can't do this atm because of the shoulder injury but do go to water aerobics. This is the second shoulder fracture I've had in 2 years (it was the other before) and I've had a bone density scan. I have osteopenia which means some bone density loss but not severe enough to get a diagnosis of osteoporosis but it's something to be aware of. I take calcium and vit D supplements and weight bearing exercise is recommended to stop it worsening.

@HierarchyOfMugs

Do you eat dairy ? You can buy protein yoghurts which have 15g or more. I have Lindhals Kvarg but there is also Skyr ( not sure of any of those spellings). Arla also do protein puddings. There is also the good old stand by of quark which I use in smoothies to bump up the protein. I make them with frozen berries, spinach and almond milk. I did make one with about 35g of protein by adding protein powder but the calories were over 200. You can buy vegan protein powders but I’ve never tried them.

what about tofu? I don’t cook with it much but I adapted a recipe for pasta sauce by replacing silken tofu for cream ( to roasted cherry tomatoes with sundried tomatoes and red pesto) and spinach and mushrooms. Other than that there’s nuts, nut butters and vegetables like peas. You could replace quinoa for rice.

Lostmyunicorn · 04/09/2023 22:29

I have been fasting today - 21 hr fast from after supper on Sunday through supper on Monday. I’m trying to do that twice a week as apparently you need to fast for around 18 hours before you reach proper fat burning stage. It’s not as hard as I thought it would be I think drinking gallons of water really helped. . I also did a beginners kettlebell routine so I’m feeling quite pleased with myself.

IsItThough · 04/09/2023 23:09

@HierarchyOfMugs I'm also vegetarian and upping protein with soya - silken tofu in a breakfast smoothie, scrambled tofu for breakfast, tempeh as a main protein or snack, edamame beans with everything; and greek yoghurt with fruit, nuts and flaxseeds. I'm a couple of months in and my muscle tone is massively improving.

makeminealargeoneagain · 05/09/2023 07:07

Just weighed myself and I've now lost exactly 1 stone. Feeling really pleased about that. Managing to keep motivated and eating lots of lovely home made soup. Bit mad on such a warm day but it's fine.

That's brilliant and a great achievement. Keep going 😀

HierarchyOfMugs · 05/09/2023 09:26

@makeminealargeoneagain well done! Great achievement!
@Lostmyunicorn that's a long fast! Hope you're seeing the effects.
I've been messing about with my nutricheck settings. 1800 calories is my TDEE so that's too high to lose weight in a noticeable timeframe. 1200 is not enough - I'll end up snacking. I'll try for 1600 and see how I get on. I don't find it easy to see all the macros on the app. It's a bit fiddly.

Doteycat · 05/09/2023 09:33

Am Re starting starting today.
Have had a mad few weeks and I absolutely let my own self care go for the sake of getting others sorted.
But now its back to me.
Back to the calorie deficit and back to yoga and walks.
Im giving myself 6 months on the calender today to make some real change.

Lostmyunicorn · 05/09/2023 10:22

That’s brilliant, well done!

@HierarchyOfMugs I’ve only just started properly on it this week so nothing noticeable yet, but there is apparently lots of evidence that a longish fast (but I think maybe no longer than 24 hours) is really
good for health generally as well as weight loss so I’m telling myself it’s good for me!

keiratwiceknightly · 05/09/2023 21:43

Well done LargeOne!

Mumstheword2022 · 06/09/2023 08:02

Good work going on here.

I have sort of played with fasting in terms of pestering a friend at work who does it religiously for months and then having a bash. To be fair, even though this has mainly been eating early , say 5pm, and skipping breakfast the next day , she claims this is a kind of fast. Now this is entirely workable sone work days AND often leads to me having very little for lunch - testing myself- and having a big tea. But it really does seem to work even if it’s just limiting the calorie consumption for that day. Reckon I could do this again ( once things get in a even keel at school 🙃)

however, back at work for two days and have hit the gym once already and two pounds gone.

Back in the game!

Angrycat2768 · 06/09/2023 20:15

I've read that. It's an eye opener!

HierarchyOfMugs · 08/09/2023 19:08

How's everyone doing? I'm having a very gradual but steady loss. Just need to keep menu planning....

Mumstheword2022 · 08/09/2023 19:15

@HierarchyOfMugs Difficult day food day BUT walked to and from work (mad day there too) and have done almost 20k steps

was 11 / 9 Thursday (- 4 lbs!) and then 11 / 10 today.

quite happy with this as I am always up and down.
Hoping for 11 8 next week? Will see

Majorityofthree23 · 09/09/2023 07:48

Back from holiday and just a 2lb gain. Very happy with that as there was plenty of wine/cake etc. lots of walking though and a great time was had.
Back on it with a vengeance today and mantra is protein (calories seem to take care of themselves) steps, and weights 3x a week. And only having wine when we're out out.
Feels like a fresh start

smalbert · 09/09/2023 16:51

Hi please can I join you all?
Am 51 and seriously struggling with losing any weight. I run lots but the weight just not shifting so I have to be totally focused on what I eat.

Rogue1001MNer · 09/09/2023 17:05

I'm joining the low carb boot camp which is on here.

I've followed the principles with some success, so will see how that goes

Asurvivor · 09/09/2023 19:26

Hi, joining the thread as I am 54, gained 2 stone during menopause and have struggled to lose it. Have tried everything - calorie counting, exercise, fasting, app to provide my optimal nutrition etc.

About 6 weeks ago, I got throat fungus (which is revolting as it sounds) - caused by stress and hormonal imbalance due to my underactive thyroid gland. The anti-fungal medecine wasn’t working so the doctor suggested I look at my diet to reduce the amount of candida fungus in my body.

So have been on a strict candida regime for 4.5 weeks to starve my throat fungus - and astonishingly the weight is falling off me. Lost 9 pounds already and I actually have a figure again. No extra exercise and I’m eating good size portions too. I feel way better too, much more energy and no headaches.

Highly recommend this for anyone who has tried everything else without success.

HalterNeck · 11/09/2023 09:42

@Asurvivor, thanks for that, could you offer a day's diet sample please, with rough quantities also?
