Really need the accountability of posting somewhere. Finally found my determination!
Today is low key as not been shopping yet, so need to use full fat milk in my tea etc, but positive vibes.
B - scrambled eggs & mushrooms
L - tuna salad
D - paprika chicken & mozzarella bake

Please can I join you? I have never tried low carb before but I really need some rapid weight loss as I have reached close to my highest weight again and hate it.

Really inexperienced at this but I had Skyr (icelandic natural yoghurt) with pecan and blueberries and tea with full fat milk for breakfast.

Planning on having eggs and spinach for lunch and then beef with stir fry sesame and ginger veg tonight. Does that sound OK?

Fraaahnces · 21/08/2023 09:42

Welcome @TotalOverhaul! The more the merrier!
Your food sounds great so far! I would recommend downloading the MyFitnessPal App and logging everything so you know where the sneaky carbs hide out.
I’m on a “Medical Keto” diet which was given to me by my neurologist, so not going to suggest carb targets or anything.
If you are going to go low carb, or do any other (real) diet for weight loss alone, my doctor said that anything will work (with different results) as long as you stick to it. I have a history of ED and yo-yo dieting and keto has been the easiest for me to stick to and not feel unwell. I imagine low carb will be similar as you feel full for longer, and naturally reduce your portion sizes over time.

Soundwasp · 21/08/2023 12:39

@Fraaahnces The lunchbox sounds amazing! Also - work trousers, wow that’s a huge difference in fit so definitely losing weight well. And how do you feel now you’ve weighed? I think we always want more off when we first get on but your loss is super.
@TotalOverhaul hello!! Of course you can join, the more the merrier. My low carb tips would be as little processed as possible, and if you do ever see weight slowing reduce dairy. Full fat milk still has a lot of carbs so be aware of that if you drink tea constantly like me - I swapped to unsweetened soya for a long time. Oh, and eat plenty at the beginning, you’ll still lose very well buy you need to help your body and mind adapt so if you are hungry eat a snack that’s low carb.

I’m trying to work out a mash of things to work long term, so yes losing is very important but so too is physical health (have a bit of a dicky pancreas so can’t go very high fat) and emotional health (control sadness/overeating thinking). I also want to eat as many things as possible with the family. They wolfed down my fish stew last week and no wonder, it was gorgeous!

Honestly, my nurse brain tells me that the reason low-carb/v.low carb works so well for us is because we probably all have dicky pancreas’.
As for how I feel after weighing in… it’s always a bit of a double-edged sword for me. I didn’t have a standard ED, but a crazy mum who was anorexic, trying to force one on me. I’m not triggered into starving myself when I weigh myself, but I hear her voice in my head and suspect I have a bit of PTSD from my childhood. I try and think about how I’d talk to a friend in the same situation and use the same language.

Soundwasp · 21/08/2023 17:58

@Fraaahnces imagining you are that friend that you’d give really great advice to, that’s really strong. I find it so easy to give my children (adult/teen/primary) gentle advice, loving advice but I can’t do it for myself very well. All I hear is my mother, even after all these years; I was never good enough for her. Ach well.
Today has been little food as really not hungry. Scrambled eggs for breakfast, Konjac pasta with loads of garlic & courgettes/onion/runner beans.

Have to say, I was really impressed with the Konjac penne. Going to make it again tomorrow, it was so good.

First low carb day for me today
B:Skyr with blueberries and coffee with milk
L: steamed spinach mixed with nutmeg and cheddar with 2 poached eggs. Adding the cheese made it delicious and really filling
D: roast chicken thighs with green leaf salad.

Bit of a breakthrough as I haven't stuck to a diet beyond lunch of the first day for decades.

I had a sharp apple and two plums as snacks too. Not being total keto, just not having any very carby carbs - bread, pasta, potatoes etc.

Intrigued by Konjac penne. Off to look that up.

Fraaahnces · 22/08/2023 03:39

@TotalOverhaul - this is absolutely not a keto thread. I’ve chosen to do keto for medical reasons (and stay away from the diet crusaders). We’re just here to support each other as we potter along our chosen diet paths. Because I am not eating fruit yet, I am taking a multivitamin every day. My diet is extreme and I absolutely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else.

Soundwasp · 22/08/2023 05:06

@TotalOverhaul well done on managing the first day, that’s brilliant! Sounds as if this is the right time for you, mentally.
Definitely not a nagging-at-each-other mindset on this thread, I didn’t like the bombastic attitudes on a few threads where you’d get attacked rather than supported. If advice is asked for, then it’s given nicely, otherwise we are all just doing it our own way and that’s great. My Mum lost loads of weight years ago just by dropping potatoes and bread.

Today’s food:
B - scrambled eggs with spinach
L - same as last night’s dinner, it was so good.
D - maybe nothing, maybe Quorn stir fry
More water!

I caved and made a watermelon salad last night. It was obviously too soon, and it has thrown me out of ketosis. Back on the roadkill again today.

I caved too and had a bunch of grapes and a glass of white wine. But overall not too bad - feta and olive salad for dinner, parma ham and leaves for lunch, greek yoghurt with nuts and berries at breakfast.

But I need some more breakfast ideas. Ran out of skyr and yoghurt. Can't have eggs as DH wants omelettes for dinner tonight. I just had a sharp apple and a cup of coffee, but I know fruit isn't ideal. What do you all have for breakfast?

Fraaahnces · 25/08/2023 15:21

You’re not going to like my breakfast answer @TotalOverhaul. I’m not hungry until lunchtime. Usually have a coffee (sometimes with protein powder if I feel especially virtuous). If I’m hungry late morning I’m not afraid to have leftovers for “BLUNCH” as I call it. Otherwise Cheese, crudités, etc.
I also recommend looking at Pinterest for low carb breakfast ideas too.

I am usually hungry in the morning - though not so much since starting low carb. Can last until about 11am but never fancy leftovers until lunch time. I need something fresher at breakfast. I'll have to remember to keep a supply of yoghurt or skyr.

Fraaahnces · 26/08/2023 02:56

@TotalOverhaul - I guess I come at this also as someone accustomed to eating atypical breakfasts due to food allergies anyway. (Nightmare guest. Always being my own food.)
Anyhow, today I am back on the meat wagon again because my couple of days with extra veg and watermelon have stopped ketosis. My metabolism is terribly slow (thyroid is dead) so suspect I’m on this for a while then… sigh. Boring. Going to have cheese omelette for BLUNCH and whatever roadkill is in the freezer for dinner.

TotalOverhaul · 26/08/2023 07:55

@Fraaahnces Cheese omelettes are good!

I have lost 4 lbs so far this week, doing low carb. I haven't been strictly keto at all. I've had apples 9but not commercial sweet ones) and one day when I was probably starting to come down with the 'keto flu' I caved in and had beans on seed toast. But overall, stuck to it.had lots of night sweats and my breath is a bit off so I must be heading towards ketosis. Haven't ever lost 4lb in 5 days before in my life!

I've walked every day too but really need to start stepping up the exercise too now.

Fraaahnces · 28/08/2023 01:45

The dog breath stage is just horrible isn’t it? Meanwhile, because it also makes my tongue feel like it’s made of feathers, I drink heaps of water during this bit.

Fraaahnces · 30/08/2023 01:52

20th wedding anniversary last night. Fell off the wagon. Had two glasses of champagne and feel awful today. (Not a big drinker, and this utterly floored me. Pathetic.)
At least I remembered… DH is much better with that than I am.
Going to be on dog food diet again for two weeks and will see what happens.
