I'm 33.

I'm 1m68 (5ft6)

I don't actually know what I weight and I got rid of my scales last year when getting on them just made me cry every time and I was just too depressed to even try and start loosing weight - I have ordered scales and will weight myself tomorrow.

However last time I weighed myself nearly a year ago I was 94kg (14st 11) and I know that I have gained since then.

I started gaining weight the beginning of covid, before 2019 my very highest weight had been 68kg ( 10st10) and my normal weight had been round 62kg for most of my adult life, so I have massively put on weight over these last four years. (Separation, depression, stress at work, and just general giving up).

My body is ruined by stretch-marks and my boobs that used to be great are now just swollen and saggy and stretch marked.

I'm really depressed by my weight and have decided its time to do something about it.

I have an office job and I'm not at all active.

I've tried to start making small changes, walking to the underground instead of getting the bus, getting the stairs up the one flight to my office instead of the lift but everything feels like a struggle and I have such awful thigh chaffing that walking is often excruciatingly painful.

I how I need to make a change because on top of it being so unhealthy being so over weight just makes me so upset. I've stopped going out as much and have just retreated into a shell.

I also have an appointment with a psychologist tomorrow.

I decided last month that enough is enough and I need to do something about it all.

I've started using face cream, and am finally having laser on my very very hairy thighs and - the point of this thread - I'm going to start saxenda tomorrow.

I thought I'd journal here.

Morning everyone, it's weigh day for me today. After my upset at the weekend of the scales not moving I have weighed in with a 2.5lb (1.1kg) loss this morning which I'm really happy with. Since restarting Saxenda I've now lost 8.1lbs (3.6kg) and 10lbs (4.5kg) since in first started in Feb but had a break.
Hope today is good for you all!

welldone @Bloodylovecrisps - Thats a great loss - less than 2 kg to go and you'll have lost a stone.

I asked MNHQ to delete my previous post as I signed off with my actual name (will teach me to Mumsnet post between work emails ;-))

Hi everyone

Been following the thread quietly and I am about to join you on my journey !

I have just been approved via boots (thanks for the discount code!)

Starting weight at the moment is 90kg and I'm 5ft 2in

Looking to lose between 2 and 4 stone ideally

2 stone gets me back in the majority of my wardrobe and to my pre baby weight

4 stone would get me back into a normal bmi range.

Hoping that this curbs some of my boredom eating at my desk and helps me re educate on portion control

Saxendastarter · 10/05/2023 14:58

@charlotr366 Welcome! Let us know when it arrives and you do your first injection!
@Footgoose have you picked yours up yet ? Any side effects?

OP posts:
Footgoose · 10/05/2023 15:21

Hi @Saxendastarter . Got my script . Am looking to start Friday so I can gauge side effects over the weekend. seemed sensible as I’m a proper woss at being ill .

Hi @charlotr366 . You and I have ball park stats . I’m 5 ft 4 and weight 85kg . Similar goals too . A 2 stone loss would give me a BMI of 25 but an additional stone would put me at my “happy weight of a bit above 10 stone . Good Luck.

Sorry, been awol for a couple of days due to busy busy busy at work (I'm a midwife, must be baby boom time again!).
I am still in absolute awe and wonder at this magical drug that appears to have resolved a lifetimes worth of issues instantaneously. I'm under no illusions though, that this may not be a long term solution.
But right now, I'm in tears of joy at feeling free from food demons for the first time in my life. I could honestly scream and shout on the streets about how amazing this feels.
The food chatter. Gone. The panic when food is served to get to it, eat it hot as quick as possible. Gone. The worry that if I don't like the meal I won't be satisfied and thus will need another meal... Gone. I am still enjoying food, but it is no longer the centre of my world.
I've had my first emotional eating test tonight... passed with flying colours. Had a huge issue over my holiday, it's cost me £350 to fix. 5 days ago, I'd have been straight for a takeaway to make me feel better. Right now, I couldn't care less about it.
Absolutely incredible. Long may it stay this way. I finally feel like a normal person around food. Like I can eat in moderation, I can stop focusing on the food and how it makes me feel. All I care about is how it fuels me and keeps me healthy.

Today's food was:
B: Melon slice, 1 hifi bar
L: Soup
S: 2 400g slices wholemeal toast with a shaving of jam
D: SW salt and pepper chicken and chips which I ate less than half my normal portion, and when I looked at my plate I wasn't disappointed for once at the size of the portion!

I can't wait to tell the dietician at the end of the month! She will be amazed given what I'd told her just a couple of weeks ago!

Another 1lb off on the scales this morning (day 4). So 4lb off from my starting weight. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

ThisMustBeMyDream · 10/05/2023 23:19

Welcome @Footgoose. How absolutely awful for you BIL, family and you. Dreadful. It is fine to make time for you in amongst all the grief. You have to look after yourself as well as those around you.

@Saxendastarter Karen sounds like a complete grade A cunt. Pardon the language. But she deserves it. Good riddance.

@OrderOfTheKookaburra 15k steps!! Oh lordy! I'm shameful, some days mine shows in at 1.5k 🙈. Let alone 15k 🤣. You're a braver person than I!

Hi @charlotr366 ! I'm also 5ft 10, but heavier at about 106kg. I've got at least 5, but preferably 6 st to lose 🥴. Portion control is exactly what this has helped me with massively over the 4 days since I started. No boredom eating at all! Pure freedom 🙌🙌🙌🙌

ThisMustBeMyDream · 10/05/2023 23:21

Ffs!! 5ft 2! Not sure how it typo'd to 5ft 10 (I wish!!).

saxendaqs · 10/05/2023 23:53

Hi, please may I join!?
I started a week ago today and am -3lb. Very happy with that.

My problem is that I'm hovering between 0.3-0.5mg. 0.6mg makes me feel rotten, extremely sick, can't eat anything at all on it.

Yesterday I did 0.4, today I did 0.5 and I'm hoping to try 0.6 again tomorrow! I'm a delicate flower and my body is very dramatic so let's hope taking it slow helpsHmm

@ThisMustBeMyDream hi fellow midwife! I'm yet to do a night shift on Saxenda. I usually
Inject at about 22:00 before bed. Any tips?

ThisMustBeMyDream · 11/05/2023 00:10

@saxendaqs I'm community so no night shifts here 🙈. I'd probably just take at the same time and hope for the best if I'm honest! I'm taking mine around 6pm. Although I will have to think about what to do when I'm on call. I might just take it to work with me those days.

Saxendastarter · 11/05/2023 00:30

Day 20

Breakfast:
2 hot chocolate ( half water/half milk)
Fizzy water

Lunch:
Left over gnocchi
Fizzy Water
Hand-full of raspberries
Fromage Blanc

Black coffee

Snack:
Black Coffee
Fizzy water
Sugar free squash

Supper:
Cucmber feta mint and sesame salad
Lemon braised salmon with fennel and leeks
Saffron rice
3 large white wine kir
a bit of a small slice of entremets noisette caramel salé
Fizzy Water

Long ramble ahead

TL:DR - Nice supper, good friends, food is expensive

All in all an okay day - had a very nice supper and am realizing that I do have some lovely friends - I'd made the salmon and rice and a friend bought the pudding, she cut it and served me the last after a bit of a conversation pause, which I thought was a bit strange but no one noticed. Once I'd had a couple of forkfuls and was stalling and everyone else had polished of their plates, she took the last bit of hers and said "oh, I think this was out of the fridge too long" and reached over and took my plate to clear it. Went to the kitchen with her and just looked at her, and ... she looked at me and replied, "well you're looking good and you made braised fish and rice and didn't eat a lot so I thought you might not want to finish your cake, I mean if you do, it's still on your plate, I just thought you might not want to eat it and didn't want x to comment so just in case I made an excuse but I'm up for kitchen eating if you want".

From this small interaction I've understood that
-Its been obvious to some people at least that I've been overeating these last few years
-That even though she's "outer circle" she's a stellar friend and that I'm doing well with my efforts.

I tend to have a very negative outlook on life and am trying to see the good outweigh the bad, her little "attention" helped.

I also host the most and this has been going on for years, I enjoy it and love cooking - (I'm the childless friend (not by choice) with the most spare beds ) but I'm also realizing that for the next few months it's probably best if I don't have the pressure of a weekly dinner party - I probably do once a week for 5-6 people, once a month for 10-12 and 3/4 times a year for 12+. Appart from the fact it means I have massive lefts overs hanging around and a freezer stuffed to the brim I'm realizing that the cost of living is just crazy. I spent 48€ on a side of salmon for 8 this evening and I have selective amnesia on what I paid for lamb for 12 last week.

Even if my friends are generous guests and gift givers there are only so many bottles of spirits/ sented candles/ houseplants/ soaps I can deal with. They always laugh when a certain friend who I adore presents bog roll/standard olive oil/washing powder/printer cartridges/ coffee/voucher for the dry cleaners ( and many other things over the years) or a bank note with a crude drawing on it as a hostess gift but honestly her gifts are the ones I prefer!

Right off to bed.

Bonne nuit à tou.t.e.s

@ThisMustBeMyDream ah! I'm on delivery suite so will just have to take it with me and I'll do it when I get a minute... aka never Wink

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 11/05/2023 00:46

Welcome @saxendaqs - sorry I'm not much help with side effects as I've had very few, but maybe instead of increasing a touch every day, increase just once a week? Give your body time to adjust.

@Saxendastarter - what a lovely friend!

Instead of fully hosting these dinner parties, why not host a bring and share, everyone brings part of the meal, works out cheaper, no unwanted candles, and at the end of the night you divide up the leftover food and everyone takes some home.

The only con would be that some of the food might not be as healthy as you would choose, but with lots of options you could make it work.

Alcohol wise, I've become a fan of flavoured vodka - buy some vodka, soak some berries or fruit in it for a couple of weeks (I've been making mulberry as we had so many on our tree, but will be making some pomegranate and some prickly pear too). Strain it, keep the flavoured vodka and mix it with sugar free lemonade, soda or tonic water.

It has a strong enough taste to make me feel like I'm drinking something nice, the actual alcohol content is dependent on how I'm feeling on the day (😬). Brightly coloured versions need very little vodka used when you mix and yet still keep their appeal. So similar to a Kir but mixed with soft drink instead of bubbles.

Saxendastarter · 11/05/2023 01:46

@OrderOfTheKookaburra Potluck is a good idea and I'm bossy enough to "impose" bringing certain things I think - we already have a one person brings the baguette, one person brings cheese, one person brings the fizzy water, everyone brings wine, and to be honest the newest boyfriend/girlfriend to join gets asked to bring pudding most of the time ( and we judge them and decide if we would agree on them "marrying in" depending on their pudding choice...😅)

The thing is that during the week everyone works late 19h30/20h00 at the earliest ( to be fair, we start late) and that given that I had the audacity to move to a cheaper area I'm about 35 minutes from peoples work places and often more from homes. So people tend to come straight from work and after numerous forgets of critical components I gave up on potluck...

It does work for evening picnics in the summer though. I always give left overs ( and this is why I have no tupplewares left ...) but always end up with like the scraps from a chicken carcass, the end of the gravy, the last bit of whipped cream.... and of course the washing up!

Flavored vodka brings back many many many memories - we used to do it as teenagers and young students with haribo strawberry sweets, carambars ( French caramels) and any candy we could get our hands on.
I never thought of doing it in an adult way with fruit but will give it a try this weekend with frozen blackcurrants- I think that you're right, kir is my "go to" home drink, but I could replace it with a flavored vodka and fizzy water - I'll let you know. Also not the point of the thread, but how do you deal with prickly pear, every time I've tried I've ended up with the spikes from the tea towel in the washing machine and transferring...

OP posts:
OrderOfTheKookaburra · 11/05/2023 02:55

How to deal with Prickly pear (ignoring my trip to A&E to get my eye flushed...)

We have a bush so have to pick it. Hold with really long tongs and cut off each pear with a REALLY sharp knife.

New trick - tried this year - light up a gas hot plate and burn off all the thorns/prickles, hold with metal tongs.

Then hold said pear on a washable cutting board (not wood in other words) with said tongs (somehow it is still a little thorny even after frying them off), chop each end off, then use a butter knife to cut under the skin and peel it off, the blunt blade works a bit better for this part.

Rinse said cutting board, tongs and butter knife frequently. Wipe everything down with paper towels and throw them away.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 11/05/2023 02:59

Wear super thick gloves, and keep some gaffa tape on hand for the stray thorns that STILL manage to hang about and get into your skin. Cut some gaffa tape off, stick on the offending area, firmly. Then peel it off and it should take the thorn with it. Might need to repeat. Normal tape is useless for this, doesn't stick to the thorn well enough.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 11/05/2023 03:01

Prickly pear is seriously only for the very brave, but damn it tastes nice. Made some sorbet from it last year, freaking fantastic!!!

Saxendastarter · 11/05/2023 07:07

Thanks @OrderOfTheKookaburra I'm happy to know that it's normal to go through an ordeal for prickly pear - I just find it so so yummy, the gaffer tape trick is a great one, but for now I might just try and buy some frozen prepared ones!

Glad to hear it is not just me bruising- reassured as I thought I was injecting wrongly. I've upped dose yesterday and today adding 3 clicks to 1.2ml, the nausea has been very mild and I am hoping a very gradual increase will help control that. I think it is still working, but yesterday afternoon I did start to feel hungry.

That prickly pear fruit sounds amazing- I have a Prickly Pear cactus, but it has never fruited- I think only ever flowered once. To be fair I did hack a few of the large pads off last year as it was becoming dangerous.

Bloodylovecrisps Well done on the loss.
saxendaqs Welcome to the thread- I am finding gradual increase helps, I dropped down at one point until the symptoms eased.

Weigh in tomorrow, hoping for a loss - but not feeling it TBH.

Keep at it everyone.

Saxendastarter · 11/05/2023 17:23

Hello everyone!

I upped to 1.8 this morning and have really struggled eating or drinking (which is unusual for me) today. Has anyone else had the feeling of being thirsty but not being able to stomach even cold water or herbal tea ?

OP posts:
OrderOfTheKookaburra · 11/05/2023 18:51

Screw it, I'm going back up to 1.8. I don't have a decent level of appetite suppression since going back down to 1.2, snacking like crazy. I have enough pens to last me 66 days at 1.8 which is enough to get me through to a July order. If I have to drop down to 1.2 at that point I'll have to decide whether its even worth me staying on. My dashboard is showing that I'm due on order 1 June so hopefully I have nothing to worry about.

Really pissed off that there was there whole blurb about them not having any shortages and strong supply lines, yadda, yadda, yadda when I joined, 1 1/2 months ago. And now "So sorry, we have a shortage, need you to stay at 1.2. Halving what we send you."

@Saxendastarter - yes to being really thirsty but fluids making me feel nauseous when I went up to 1.8. I had a slice of toast with jam on it to settle my stomach when that happened, and then guzzled several glasses of water.

@Glorfindels - our prickly pear took years to fruit. My dad planted it and sadly it fruited for the first time the summer after he passed away. Then again, he was terrible at taking proper precautions for those sorts of things so maybe that was good timing. I will have to hack it down this year after I harvest the last of the pears because it is so overgrown. Hopefully will still have some fruit next year. Although if yours has flowered, how did you not get fruit? The bulb under the flower IS the fruit, not all varieties have red fruit though, some are yellow, purple or even green, so maybe you thought they were just little leaves? If anyone has a neglected corner of the garden that they want to burglar proof - this is the plant for you!!!!
