17 stone and only 22 weeks until my birthday

I need help. I'm exactly 17 stone. I have started calorie counting from today. No exercise just yet as I have weak ankles and knees so walking can cause more harm than good. My thought process is to try and lose a stone and a half and then start gentle walking.

Anyone want to join me for some motivation?

How much in total do you want to lose?

It's difficult!! I'm trying to lose 2 stone after losing 3 last year ( I've put on 7lbs from Xmas which are still lingering)

Fantina · 12/02/2023 11:27

I’ll join you! I’m 17stones 10 down from 18stones 6 at the start of the year. I have been walking a lot to get to this point but I need to focus more on what I’m eating.

ODFOx · 12/02/2023 11:33

I have weak ankles and knees and the physio has suggested sitting exercises to raise my heart rate instead to help with fitness.
Good luck!

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2023 12:36

I've just changed jobs from an active running around retail job to a standing still talking to people all day job!

Does not help but with spring approaching I hope to get outside more

My hobby is gardening so it should be all go again soon

NewMeforthemillionthtime · 12/02/2023 12:41

According to NHS, the heaviest I should be is 10st 6lbs. I'd be happy with anything under 14 stone and then take it from there.

Can you try seated exercises? There are quite a few available on YouTube.

My advice is not to cut your calories too low but make sustainable changes. Up your water intake. Snack on veggies instead of crisps/sweets. Watch your portion sizes.

Good luck! You can do this :-)

Shirty48 · 12/02/2023 20:10

I’ll join you. I’m 16 stone 11 and 20 weeks from my birthday when I’m seeing my relative from abroad for the first time in years and also seeing DHs extended family the weekend after. I’m very unfit but I have been going to the gym mostly 1-2 a week for a few months- I just need to go more often and reduce my calories. If I don’t start now I will really regret it in the summer.

NewMeforthemillionthtime · 13/02/2023 09:36

@Shirty48 I am very unfit too. I used to like walking, but now I'm so out of breath I find it embarrassing so always make up an excuse as to why I can't go. Then as I put more weight on my ankles and knees became weaker.

@MisgenderedSwan I had a ham sandwich yesterday and usually have crisps and coke with it but switched to a cucumber sticks and water.

@Fantina we can do this. I have no clothes that fit me anymore and I won't be buying any more so I need to lose weight to get a half decent wardrobe back.

@NewMeforthemillionthtime it's horrible isn't it? I always feel embarrassed going into the office as walking around at lunchtime colleagues will effortlessly run up stairs and rush for the train whilst I'm puffing and panting behind them. I think the summer is my main motivation though - it's 100x worse when you are I hot, red faced and sweaty in the office from having commuted in.

Serpensortia · 14/02/2023 12:09

I'd like to join here too if that's okay?

I was 16st 10lbs last Wednesday, and 16st 4lbs today. I'd like to get down to 9st, but I'm taking it stone by stone as I've so much to lose 😐

beAsensible1 · 14/02/2023 12:15

What about swimming? which can take pressure off the knees and ankles.

Stationary bikes on a low setting reduce the impact on the same joints as would be used for walking and running.

A variety of seated exercises and chair yoga -

a few gentle options

ChatInMyFlat · 14/02/2023 12:16

I'm in.

I've only got 4 weeks left to lose a stone. Already lost 2.5 over the last 3 months.

Shirty48 · 14/02/2023 12:28

That's fantastic @ChatInMyFlat. I need some of that motivation.

clpsmum · 14/02/2023 12:35

I'm in I'm down from 17st10 to 15.07 yesterday but still have a long long way to go.

Apparently every pound you lose is the equivalent of four pounds on the impact it has on your joints so the more you lose the easier walking g etc will become

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/02/2023 13:11

Hi I've had to lose a bit in the past ( am down 4 dress sizes and kept it off had to stop weighing and switch but that's another story ) anyway just wanted to pop on to say the only thing that worked for me ( and quickly ) was intermittent fasting .. it's free and there's loads of info .. start in increments .. good luck xx

NewMeforthemillionthtime · 15/02/2023 11:48

Thank you for all the replies and tips. Weighed myself this morning and have lost 2lbs. I know I shouldn't have as it's only been 3 days but just wanted to see if calorie counting was working. I'm away for over the weekend and will be eating out and am worried about that.

@clpsmum that's really interesting about the pressure on joints. My knees and ankles have only felt weak since I put this last stone on. They give way quite a lot now.

If you know where you are eating out try to view the menu online and decide in advance what to have. Most places have the calories on the menu too.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 15/02/2023 19:41

I've lost 30lbs since January which is 2.5 stone. I've done it by intermittent fasting and just not eating junk. I've been working on my gut health and overall health and the weight has just fallen off.

I'm using the Zoe diet program and its all about thinking about your eating properly. I now think about everything I eat, and ask myself if it has nutritional value and will it help/hinder my gut health and then decide if I want to eat it.

I have health issues so I needed to get myself sorted. I have been exercising as an aid to my overall health but the weight loss has been down to diet rather than exercise.

Good luck!

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 15/02/2023 19:50

I've also been eating lots of fermented food - sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha. And trying to get my 30 different fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains etc. It's all really helpful with weight loss.

familyissues12345 · 15/02/2023 20:32

Ooh I'll join please!

Currently about 17 stone, having my gallbladder removed next week and on a huge pre op detox at the moment so losing weight as we speak. Hoping that as I've gone cold Turkey on all my favourites for 2 weeks, I can continue giving them up/cutting back significantly. Fingers crossed!

Would love to get to a size 16, so probably about 13-14 stone. Anything more would be fab!

clpsmum · 15/02/2023 21:43

@NewMeforthemillionthtime it really is I've lost two stone which is the equivalent of 112lbs on my joints 😱😱 I can feel a huge difference. Unfortunately I still have a long way to go!

You can do this

dustydewdrop · 15/02/2023 22:04

I’ll join too! Was 16st 12 last Tuesday and managed to lose 5lbs when weighed myself yesterday . Ideally I’d like to lose 4stone (I’d still be classed as overweight going by BMI but that’s a weight I’m comfortable with). It’s such a slog I feel I need motivation from like-minded people.

Inca22 · 15/02/2023 22:24

I'll join too. I'm going back to keto as that was the only thing that worked for me. I'm 16 stone and want to be 14 by my birthday in May. 13 weeks.
