Hello and Welcome

Following on from the LOSE IT! October’s Thread here’s Novembers Thread.

🎄8 Week Count Down to Christmas 🎄😬 There is still time (for those who want to) for a body/mind/fitness overhaul before the festivities and family get together commence 🥳 Plus, who doesn’t want to start 2023 feeling more energised, fitter and svelte!

Jump right in! Reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself! Being mindful, planning ahead with a few tweaks here and there and it’s not impossible!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding. We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable). It’s a journey, not a destination.

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day. I try not to drink calories and have very little processed food or sugar. I meal plan, set my intentions daily and exercise most days.

Are you in?😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why? You can do it, if you really want too!

Was126orbustandmaybebust · 07/11/2022 18:44

@fallfallfall where did you find the walk video?
I have just done the 3miles with Leslie on You Tube as it is chucking it down here in London.
I am determined I will be a lot lighter by 30th November.

fallfallfall · 07/11/2022 19:12

@Was126orbustandmaybebust i purchased the walk at home app and it's available right on my tv. way way way more options than the ones on you tube. they have a free one-month trial so no harm in looking into it.
the walk at home membership has been one of the best purchases for my health.

Checking in from mad family time to say I am still pretty much on track with food and walking lots. Have enjoyed the odd takeaway/tea and biscuits, but consciously and really enjoying them. Haven't gone on to a 'blow out' or 'f* it' eat everything which is a really nice change from before.

Well done on your losses everyone! Back to normal life in a couple of days.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 08/11/2022 06:38

@SanFranBear it was just a little local one, music, art, dogs and horses. Literally a bit of everything.
Back down to 66.5kg this morning
@LadyWithLapdog I'd never actually used vinted before, it's not available where I live but I'm headed to the uk at the end of the month so decided to give it a go. I just searched brands I know I like and know the sizing

ImALittlePea · 08/11/2022 09:08

Morning

I've deferred the food shop (again 😬) in favour of taking DD to our local baby gym this morning, so going tonight instead. Means our lunch choices are a little more limited but after a few very restricted weeks of activities I feel that she is priority today.

Plan for today is:
Lunch - possibly a salad if I can cobble enough elements together. If not, soup/cup-a-soup
Dinner - hunters chicken with baked potato and lots of green veggies

DH had a doctors appointment yesterday due to generally feeling a bit nauseous on and off lately. My (non-medical) instinct is that it's probably down to exhaustion and anxiety from the last few weeks. The doctor picked up he had quite high blood pressure though, so he's having to look at what he eats a bit more carefully to lower that, so that's going to be a factor when forming our meal plans for a while (at least). Any tips on how to help tackle this (especially decent/filling lunches and snacks) would be appreciated.

TheRealHousewife · 08/11/2022 10:20

Good Morning All

@fallfallfall those positions look difficult. I’ll give them a whirl later and let you know how I get on. The snow sounds deep … at least you have a cosy Parker if you need to venture out 🥶

@SanFranBear Definitely try for a refund!

@MercuryRising Fabulous progress 👏👍

Sorry if I missed anyone … rushing out the door. Be back later 👍

LittlePea I'm guessing the doc will recommend lowering salt intake? Exercise too.. Does your DH have activity that he enjoys?

TheRealHousewife · 08/11/2022 16:44

Hi @ImALittlePea What a worry for you all. My oh recently had a blood pressure scare. In the first instance he changed his diet by ridding the cakes, biscuits, fried foods, crisps, alcohol etc. He really cleaned his diet up. He also started to move more by going for a daily walk. This actually didn’t do much (apart from him feeling generally fitter) due to his not being totally lifestyle induced and more heredity in nature. Hence he is now medicated and his bp is normal to high normal.

fallfallfall · 08/11/2022 17:11

@ImALittlePea i always find good recipes on the canadian heart and stroke foundation web site.
there's some basic info on salt and processed foods.
www.heartandstroke.ca/healthy-living/healthy-eating
but here is the lunch idea section

ImALittlePea · 08/11/2022 21:10

Thanks @Cloudberries123 @TheRealHousewife @fallfallfall

His BP is just on the cusp of hypertension, according to the NHS website, and there were no major alarm bells set off from the doctors - apparently she didn't really say much about that in particular, other than to recommend some rest. He's going for blood tests and expecting a follow up after that. From his own research he's making changes to his diet (which I'm trying to help facilitate as much as possible with meal plans and more sensible choices while shopping so we don't have his go-to snacks in the house any more). He plays football once a week and goes for a walk every day at lunch, so he's already moderately active but again is looking to increase his activity. His BMI is just on the cusp of overweight so that will hopefully come down. In terms of lunches, for now I'm trying to plan evening meals to cook which he can have for lunch the following day, and curbing the amount of salt I cook with.

I do feel like I have quite major health anxiety lurking in the shadows at the moment. Which isn't a surprise, I guess. I'm trying to channel my energy from this into making sure we're eating in the healthiest way possible, which I hope will then in turn have the desired results for both DH, the DC in general and also for me on the scales 😬

SanFranBear · 08/11/2022 22:44

Sounds like you have a great plan in place, LittlePea and hopefully it will start to reap rewards. Sorry to hear you're anxious - it can be debilitating, especially when it focuses on health. My MIL had some nasty health scares about 3 years ago and since then, DD has really struggled when anyone has got ill, even if just a bad cold. I hope your starts to ease - DD ended up having a few sessions with a school counsellor which seems to have helped... for now at least. Are you able to access any talking therapies at all - perhaps through an EAP at work or similar?

Indulgent dinner today as completed a major work deadline and looks like the house referencing has all gone through so wanted to have a little 'whoop!' The main course wasn't unhealthy - mussels - although did involve garlic bread to dunk but then had a very rich, chocolate mug cake afterwards - savoured every bite!

Busy day again tomorrow and hoping to get out for a bit of a walk... Good luck to any WoW'ers for the morning - you'll nail it!

milkfromthesleepycow · 09/11/2022 07:02

Pfft WOW 1kg gain. I'm not surprised. Work is still insane and I'm really struggling to juggle all my commitments. Got my first day off in two weeks on Saturday. Hopefully a weekend of rest will allow me to refocus. Positively I've also booked in with a PT this evening to see what they can offer (although I do question the time commitment 😂)

@ImALittlePea I think your plan for your family is good and I'm sure it will help you too. Personally I'd just concentrate on non processed rather than low salt as it's easier and if you're worried about health anxiety it might be best not to move to anything too restrictive

The evidence base for low salt diet in hypertension is quite interesting, especially the subgroup analyses

@ImALittlePea I think if you avoid processed food you'll be avoiding a whole load of salt at the same time. I'm always amazed by the quantities of salt that manufacturers and restaurants use. Interesting article @milkfromthesleepycow.

What sort of cold weather snacks are you looking for @wannadisc0 ? I'm trying hard not to snack - it's my very diluted version of IF - but I find a hot drink often does the trick.

WoW - stayed the same at 11 st 11 lbs despite some meals out and cooking for guests (then finishing the leftovers for the next couple of days).

Was126orbustandmaybebust · 09/11/2022 08:43

I look at that this weekend @fallfallfall - I love my at home walks but Leslie's voice and the ever grinning smug Nathan are starting to grate a bit.....
Day 51
SW:143.2
CW:136
GW:126
7.2lbs
So very pleased to have lost the 7lbs and now 10 more to go - by Christmas seems too a bit too optimistic given it has taken me 51 days to shed just over 7 but we will see. 66 days by my roughish reckoning ......

CrimsonAlligator · 09/11/2022 09:41

That must be such a worry @ImALittlePea . I’m not surprised it’s triggering some anxiety and distracting yourself by having a think about his overall diet sounds like a healthy coping mechanism to me (as long as it doesn’t become obsessive of course!)

Have you looked at the DASH diet? This looks like a good starting point:

www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/dash-diet-recipes

As there’s a lot of whole grains, beans and nuts in this diet, I wonder if something like whole meal pitta/vegetable sticks and hummus (home made?) would make a good snack? Or unsalted nuts?

Not much progress to report here. I’m not exactly sticking to my diet, so that will be why. Sigh! 😂 Well done to everyone who’s lost weight this week.

giatta · 09/11/2022 09:44

Morning,
WoW
SW: 85.8kg (new SW for November)
CW: 84.8kg - loss of 1kg this week, happy with that
Mini goal for November: 83kg

ImALittlePea · 09/11/2022 13:09

Thank you everyone for your links and advice.

@milkfromthesleepycow I've digested as much of that article as I can but it's all quite technical for me 😂

No, I hadn't heard of the DASH diet @CrimsonAlligator (although it's also mentioned on the links @fallfallfall kindly shared too). It all looks like common sense and straightforward enough - the issue I have is DH is quite fussy. He isn't much of a fan of meat unless it's processed - so sausages, minces, bacon, frozen goujons etc. I've tried making my own chicken nuggets etc on numerous occasions but he doesn't like them (and neither do DC 🙄). He will eat chicken breast, but that's about it. He doesn't like fish, eggs, beans (again, unless baked beans - so processed) or pulses. He loves vegetables, and he'll eat cheese (but only cheddar). It's really hard to create meals that satisfy all of us, especially without any processed foods involved. Having said that, I think our dinners are mostly quite healthy; we don't have ready meals, I make sauces from scratch etc. It's breakfasts and lunches that are harder, however I've got some inspiration from the links shared and will look at some homemade granola or overnight oats. He's already recognised he needs to either cut down on or cut out completely crisps, biscuits, chocolate, bread etc.

One thing that I really don't think has helped has been the way our last month has gone. We've had to have ready meals, we've had more takeaways and much more grab-and-go type eating - just out of pure necessity. So I'm hoping the return to our more normal balance now that I'm better, along with some positive changes, will be all that's needed 🙏

@TheRealHousewife I remember you saying about your OH's BP, I'm glad his is within normal range now. Would you mind sharing how long it took for his to come down - how long was he on the diet/exercise before offered medication? I'm only asking so I can try and manage my own expectations (and anxiety) over things improving. But please don't worry if you'd rather not say.

Sorry - I feel like I'm derailing a little. I really appreciate all of your advice and support. It's helping me focus and come up with positive ideas, which I'm hoping will help from a health, weight and anxiety management point of view!

WoWs - well done everyone!
@milkfromthesleepycow great you've got a positive plan with the PT and a restful weekend ahead. I'm sure you'll see things go back downwards soon 😊
Well done for STS @Lizsmum
Congrats on the losses @wannadisc0 @Was126orbustandmaybebust @giatta

@wannadisc0 I'm not much of a snacker, but if I feel a hunger pang coming I will have either a glass of water or a cuppa. Otherwise, I'll have fruit and yoghurt. If you feel like you need something more 'substantial' and warming, how about a cup-a-soup or something along those lines?

@ImALittlePea is mince not simply ground beef? The grinding of beef doesn’t make it processed? Baked beans made from dried beans wouldn’t be processed either. My dh is a good baked bean cook once made portions are frozen they keep really well.
my kitchenaid has an attachment to grind my own.
chicken, have you tried pounding it, whereby you bread then pound the seasoned breading into the chicken? really tender!.

ImALittlePea · 09/11/2022 16:33

Totally feel you @wannadisc0 there's something about the crunch of crisps that just feels more satisfying! I've been having a couple of cheddar biscuits lately when I've wanted crisps - savoury, salty, crunchy, but only 20cals each?

Yes of course @fallfallfall what I meant was processed mince products like burgers, koftes etc. I used to make them from scratch routinely but we mostly buy prepared from the shop nowadays. So that's a change I can make.

Would love to get the family eating homemade baked beans! Does your DH have a recipe you could share?

And no - haven't tried that method for chicken. Worth a try! Thank you!

fallfallfall · 09/11/2022 16:41

@ImALittlePea JO does a video on pounding breaded chicken, I’ve also switched breading for ground nuts.
Beans 😊, I’ll ask. He shared it recently with a friend of mine. So he’s got it nearby.
burger patties, I buy bulk, weigh out portions 1/4 pound, then press using a kitchen gizmo into a perfect shape then freeze layered between wax paper.

CrimsonAlligator · 09/11/2022 17:04

@ImALittlePea would your DH eat beans etc if they’re part of something bigger, e.g. chickpeas added to a curry? I think the problem with beans is that, unless they’re surrounded by something tasty they do get a bit bland (I say this as a life long vegetarian who practically lives on beans!)

This is a good recipe. Not sure about the fried halloumi from a blood pressure point of view, but feta would make a good substitute. Alternatively, just leave it off.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bean-halloumi-stew

When I make this, I use a tbsp of harissa, instead of the chilli pesto. Much less greasy and a more interesting flavour. I also usually add a bag of spinach and serve with bulgur wheat, which is supposed to be good from a heart health point of view 😋
