Has anyone just thought ‘fuck it, maybe I’m just a bit fat now?’

I’ve been a size 8/10 all my life, apart from a few blips.

Now mid forties, weight has been steadily gaining, exacerbated by lockdown and a couple of bereavements.

I’ve made some efforts to lose it, losing a few pounds and then just going back to my old ways. I have a very sweet tooth.

I’m just overweight on my BMI, though I feel it looks worse than the numbers suggest because I’m short and don’t carry weight very well.

I love clothes and nothing really fits me any more.

But I’m finding it SO hard to get motivated to lose weight. I just can’t be arsed. And I know all the health reasons, and I’m really pissed off about my clothes.

But I still can’t.

And maybe I should just join the substantial percentage of British women who are overweight, say fuck it, and buy a bigger pair of jeans.

Has anyone done this?

I'm the other way round. Spent my early forties sliding comfortably into being overweight and the poster child for middle aged dressing. Didn't really care that much.

Then had a shock when a hot man appeared in the office and I realised I wasn't ready for invisibility. I lost a stone and a half which I have mostly kept off. I have the photos of my comfy self to keep me on my toes.

I am the same. I am now 50 and losing weight takes a lot longer than it used to.

I have a big holiday soon and that is my current motivation. So I am calorie counting and increasing my exercise.

Over lockdown I literally stuffed my face. Nothing fitted. I spent months in pyjamas, working from home.

But I have lost about 2 stone now and I am back in my jeans which are comfortably loose.

I think it's all about how you feel about yourself. I'm sure you are lovely as you are. But if you want to lose weight it's about finding something that motivates you so it is sustainable

Yes I did - went from 8/10 up to 12 and then was hitting a 14 (I’m five foot one, so it was definitely showing) Nothing was fitting, but denied it was a problem for a long time. Then was checking my BMI one day and for the first time in 52 years I was going into the overweight category and I got a pop-up to say ‘consider losing weight’. That was a shock - it really hurt.
I went to Slimming World, lost a stone and have drastically reduced the amount of fat and carbs I eat - which was hard as I like my cake. So far it’s stayed off, I still have cake, just not as often and not great big bits. Apparently losing just 5-10% of your body weight have massive health benefits so at my age I’m happy with that - plus it’s nice not to have a stomach that spills over the top of my jeans which was really uncomfortable.

@MorrisZapp

that's great!
Also what happened with hot man?

ThorIsAGod · 12/08/2021 18:33

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba that's exactly what I was going to ask 🤣

MorrisZapp · 12/08/2021 19:15

Lol the hot man remains happily married, as do I! I wasn't looking for action, but I did like him just enough to want him to notice my existence, which he has. Funnily enough, he's put on a bit of weight over lockdown 😂

I wasn't bothered about my weight, was a bit lumpy, but Jan 2019 I was 10 stone 2 (5ft 6)

Got stressed through work and lost a bit of weight (not much)

Giving up bread made a massive change

I then got a new phone and started tracking my steps later in 2019 so was 9 stone 6 in Feb 2020, but never logged food and I still don't

I am now 8 stone 8 and I am 55. I walk fast on the treadmill for 30 mins 5 times a week. My job is very sedentary.

Not a boast, but I am happier now

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2021 00:20

This is me. I am still in a size 10, but feel like my jeans pinch if I sit for too long! I’m only 4lb over my “fighting weight” but don’t want to end up heavier. I’ve been on holiday for the last six weeks and am back to work on Monday, and scouring this board for inspiration.

Rainallnight · 18/08/2021 22:23

Thanks very much for all the replies and I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to come back.

Lots of food (ha!) for thought on this thread. I thought people would say, ‘oh don’t worry about it, happens to us all!’ So it’s interesting that there are so many cautionary tales.

The point about confidence is a really good one. I definitely don’t feel confident, hate having my photo taken etc etc.

And of course it’s a good point about what would happen if I piled more weight on top of this.

I’ve been doing some thinking more broadly about my life in general and in fact I think I'm quite depressed. I’ve been surprised I don’t have the drive and energy to tackle my weight, but thinking about it, I’ve lost drive and energy across a whole range of fronts. I’m not terribly well at the moment, I don’t think.

So it’s a bit of a vicious circle because I’m sure if was eating better and looking after myself, I’d feel better mentally.
