We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

If you want to try it first, Sainsbury's does this in the fridge section, and I think there is a kimchi

I might try buying some first to see how well I like them before trying to make them. Am quite intrigued though!

Thank you, may pop in later this evening and get this 👍
JumpLeadsForTwo · 13/08/2021 18:38

I have become a little addicted - have a shelf in the kitchen with bubbling jars! Kimchi can smell quite pungent but I do love it

jewel1968 · 13/08/2021 19:54

Does anyone have a recipe for a creamy salad dressing. I am avoiding mayonnaise as it's made mainly with rapeseed or sunflower oil. I thought about making my own mayonnaise but I don't eat it that often. I found one with mainly Greek yogurt but it also had mayonnaise in it.

Of the two I think the kimchi will be the more versatile. The kefir was tangy and unusual but really just another form of yoghurt. I bought the grains which can be used over and over. I will do it occasionally I think.

For proper kimchi you need the special Korean spice mix whose name eludes me. ( see memory issues, above.) But it was surprisingly easy to find locally in my small town. I have left over Daikon ( Japanese radish) which I'm not too fond of raw, to use up. I was amazed how much the cabbage wilted down when salted. I used twice as much as I thought I would.

I'll try the sauerkraut next I think.

Good idea to taste it first. I might be wishing I had done that when I try my concoction ! ( I am liking the idea of it with eggs already though ! )

@jewel1968 Do you like blue cheese? You can get a St Agur blue cheese spread/dip with no nasties. I stir that into yoghurt and use that as a dressing. In fact with yoghurt as a base you could do all sorts- add mustard ( Dijon probably) or salt, garlic purée and chopped herbs like chives or finely shredded spring onion?

jewel1968 · 13/08/2021 20:41

@words thanks. Like the idea of blue cheese.

I found the Korean chilli on Amazon - massive pot which will keep me going. I also find making the sauerkraut quite therapeutic- bit like kneading dough.

@jewel1968 I got some of this in Tesco and it's lovely. Only about 4 ingredients, and no veg/seed oils.

Third week of virtuAlly no weight change for me. Sad

Portion control coming up this week. I get that it's not as straightforward as cals in and out, but also this week and last my step count is significantly down. I wonder if it also has something to do with increased intensity workouts and muscle repair. ( greedy person grasping at straws)

On another topic, I noticed my ankle swelling was significantly reduced this morning. I'm not a terribly observant person generally and don't spend time scrutinising myself, but it is very noticeable.

I will credit the ACV, coz I love the stuff.

jewel1968 · 14/08/2021 08:48

@TammyTwoSwanson I have seen that online but not in Tesco's. Is it with other mayonnaises or somewhere else? Also, I had thought avocado oil was high or highish in omega 6? Although I think I saw an olive oil version online but it was £££££

Ah Words at least the scales haven't increased! I'm sure you will lose some soon, especially on your walking holiday. I'm back running every other day following my knee injections, not as far as before, around 12km (it's hard at the moment after 2 months off) and cycling on alternate days around 50km. It won't help shift weight, I just enjoy exercise and am lucky to have the time to do it. I have ordered Herman Ponyzer's latest book 'Burn' which demonstrates that weight loss is nothing to do with exercise (although that doesn't mean we should stop doing it). I listened to him on a podcast this week and I like science - Pontzer is an anthropologist like Lieberman.
Words · 15/08/2021 08:10

Hope the knee continues to improve sam. Sounds very painful indeed.

I had fish pie last night - the Mary Berry recipe - and 'twas very good. Yes, there was flour in the sauce but I am allowing myself that. There's plenty left. I had seconds - but just to keep my friend company obviously Grin

I don't expect to lose on holiday- the food will be very good, so I will eat it! Doing about ten miles a day so not excessive, and luggage is taken ahead (wussy)

I think this last stretch to healthy BMI plus margin is going to be long and challenging.

I've a big stressor on at the moment which will be long term about a planning application being proposed for a development close by. So far I am channelling the stress into activity and am not comfort eating. I do seem to be more resilient to stress than I used to be, which can only be a good thing.

Tiredandbored · 16/08/2021 07:24

Morning all, does anyone have any nice meal plans for this week? I haven't worked out our menu yet, am going to the shop later so will need to do it soon. All meals will be on-plan though as (for the first week in ages) we've no meals out or visitors this week.

I didn't have a great weekend in terms of staying on-plan as I had a wedding on Friday (lovely meal, but 3 courses and cake...) and a birthday party on Saturday (more cake as well as desserts and biscuits...) However, new start today!

Words · 16/08/2021 09:51

Nothing too inspiring I'm afraid tired.

Sounds like a very busy weekend!

I have fish pie to finish as well as a venison mince dish I made into a sort of bolognaise to have with rice. Salads with some form of protein for lunches. Fruit and yoghurt for puds.

HighlandCowbag · 16/08/2021 12:15

I've not got anything much planned yet either. We bought loads of tapas bits in friday we haven't used up so that's tonight sorted. Not 100% on plan as some ofnit has veg oil in, but will be about 90% OK ai think. Then tomorrow we are having fry up. Naice butchers bacon and sausage so again not 100% but OK. Not thought any further than that.

Have lost another 1lb tho so consolidated that next stone bracket I think. And I know a good few alcohol free days would see another couple of lbs of water retention loss but that's probably not going to happen til kids back at school.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/08/2021 17:14

Roast chicken tonight with roast potatoes, skirlie and broccoli, mmm. Then chicken salad tomorrow and perhaps fajitas (wrap for everyone else but not me) for dinner if there’s enough left. And I might manage to complete the MN chicken bingo by making stock and turning it into soup.

My weekend has been v off-plan too - sandwiches, scone, pizza and a handful of sweeties. But I walked a lot both days and did C25k week 1 run 4 yesterday. It was supposed to be week 2 run 1 but DM is in charge of the runs and we were on the third interval before I realised it hadn’t changed. Week 2 starts tomorrow.

Think I'm back in the zone. I have stopped wanting croissants again, and I have lost 1lb.

Lunch today was grilled mushrooms with melted Stilton in them, grilled asparagus, and bacon. Mmmm.

Tiredandbored · 16/08/2021 18:55

Good day of meals for me today:
B - porridge
L - salad with lettuce, rocket, spinach, beetroot, avocado and mozzarella
D - spiced chicken which includes a huge amount of veg (mushrooms, peppers, celery, pak choi, onion, green beans, carrot and courgette)
Snack - fresh fruit with kefir yoghurt (my first foray into fermented foods).

I think I ended up with over 15 different varieties of fruit and veg today, though not all of them were full portions. Pleased with that though!

Words · 16/08/2021 19:22

Bad day here. Very stressed.

No breakfast
Lunch : gazpacho with apple cider vinegar and flaxseed. Cheese and some leftover shop bought crackers

Dinner: fish pie and veg. Then chocolate. Then a scone ( defrosted in the micro and re heated in the oven) with jam and cream. Then yoghurt, with more cream, some coffee ice cream and bLueberries.

Feel rather sick. Sad

Aria999 · 16/08/2021 21:49

Sorry you had a bad day @Words ☹️

Tiredandbored · 17/08/2021 19:15

How has today been for you Words? I hope you're doing better Flowers

Bearyhumcrack · 17/08/2021 20:04

Does anyone have yoghurt for breakfast? I got a flax seed/chia mix from Tesco which is tasty but wondering what else I can have on it to help my ratios and fill me up!

Aria999 · 17/08/2021 20:21

@Bearyhumcrack I do have yoghurt but not much on it so not much help! I have flax seeds which I now crush up a bit with the pestle and mortar so my digestive system can access their insides. I have honey, because natural yoghurt is boring without it. And I sometimes have chopped fruit (sorry jenkinson but it's not much).

I seldom feel unfull though. Are you having full fat yoghurt?
