Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

@WeWantAMackerelNotASprat what about oatcakes with cheese? The Nairn cheese oatcakes don't have any seeds or vegetable oils in them!

I'm going into my third week of this woe and I cannot believe the difference already! I never crave anything anymore, I leave food on my plate if I'm full - it's impossible to overeat when you cut out grains and processed food! I have had 3 or 4 squares of good quality dark chocolate a couple of times (checked the ingredients!) - I never ate dark chocolate before this but after trying a bit of ds's milk chocolate, it was sickly sweet.
Food just generally tastes better too; has anyone noticed that?

CornedBeef451 · 16/07/2021 20:46

@TammyTwoSwanson I've found the same. Me and DH had leftover chicken for lunch with avocado and salad and he commented on how it was the most boring lunch ever but I thought it was delicious!

I also got oddly excited about vine ripened tomatoes, they just smelt so good.

Today was DS's birthday party and I resisted a Mac Donald's, it didn't smell good although it did make my mouth water. Thinking it would probably make me feel quite ill was quite a good deterrent.

behappy38 · 16/07/2021 23:17

yes I found that eating a new potato was so sweet, in a good way!

I am struggling a bit...I have a red itchy rash on my face. Can't tell if it is keto rash or dairy rash.

I am eating around 70g of carbs so can't be keto....but prior to this I was a carb queen so imagine my body is freaking out at carb reduction. Also, I just quit three years of veganism. I can't get enough protein as a vegan without ten tonnes of carbs so I tried reintroducing dairy slowly (via Nairns cheese oatcakes) and I have a red itchy rash. I guess I have to rebuild my tolerance to dairy. Have started taking a probiotic

Well wow. I am 3/4 pound down this week. I was fully expecting a gain, with my pizza and breakfasts on holiday, as well as a cream cake yesterday. But no. I am really pleased as I had stalled/ hovered up and down for weeks previously.

Slow and steady wins the race. At this rate of two ponds 😂 pounds ! a month I have at least another ten months to healthy BMI so you lot will have to put up with me a while longer.Grin

I put on a pair of shorts yesterday I bought some years ago and have never worn. They fit perfectly. I look nice in them. In fact I don't now look overweight at all!

I had a good week's walking last week too- just over 100 miles in the hills with no joint issues either.

It does very much seem to be all about trial and error, and finding a balance that works for each one of us, rather than over stressing about rules and numbers. I can live with that, and the occasional blip- it's all data, and as long as the trend is down, I am happy.

Words · 17/07/2021 07:28

Oh and check out the recipe thread for my home made yoghurt news...

TheLeadbetterLife · 17/07/2021 10:08

That’s brilliant @Words, congratulations on the loss, and the shorts.

I had a similar experience with a pair of shorts last year. Bought them in a sale years ago and could never get them over my thighs. Now they’re loose on me. I also spent yesterday taking in several skirts and pairs of husband’s shorts (he’s lost weight too).

I wouldn’t say I don’t look overweight - maybe I do. I’m a size 14-16 now, depending on how fitted the item is and the shop. Also my dressmaking form is supposedly a size 18 and it has a smaller waist than me - size inflation I s’pose. It’s all a load of bollocks.

I’m fairly happy with my Viking physique, as I’m in proportion. Just want to lose a bit more weight to be sure of clearing out the abdominal fat, and tone up really.

I'll have a look for those! Thank you

Words · 17/07/2021 15:56

Thanks leadbetter .

I am the same size as you. So you don't look overweight, definitely Grin

Re sizes more generally. I inherited some of my mother's old walking gear when she went to the care home. From the early 80s I would guess.

I measured them against my own current walking trousers from the same makers. A size 16 then was much smaller than a size 14 now. ( so will probably never fit me, but I live in hope!)

All fits in with what the book says about the explosion in obesity from the late 80s on, doesn't it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 17/07/2021 16:35

Another benefit I have noticed is that I don’t finish a meal and still think I’m hungry and go and inhale chocolate!

New lowest weight achieved this morning! 0.2lb lower, but that’s not the point.

I have finished the book now and there is one thing I disagree with and that is cutting out bread. I have no doubt that will lead to cravings of bread. Bread is such a big part of people's diet and to cut it out is probably too difficult to do. Far better to eat less of it and perhaps bake your own. I have been baking bread for a while that has buttermilk and butter in it so might have omega 3.

I think it is the same for all the suggestions- you can't cut it out completely, but moving from a diet of toasted UPF white bread for bkfast, then a sandwich to a good quality sourdough much less often will have a great impact on your health, and be totally sustainable. I tried reducing my wheat intake a while ago, and now really enjoy my weekend poached egg on sourdough toast. I have the loaf in my freezer, but don't feel the need to eat it every day. I don't touch the white bread in my bread bin as o no longer like the taste. Just need to convince my DH and DDs to make the switch!!

I think home baked bread is very different as by and large it only has 4 or 5 ingredients in.
jewel1968 · 17/07/2021 19:58

Yes agree good quality bread less often should help a lot. And agree homemade has only a small number of ingredients.
I totally agree with his suggestion to embrace cooking and relax and enjoy it.

If anyone is looking for a 'treat' bread with few ingredients, Jason's sourdough from Ocado is the best I have ever had. Nicer even than the one from my local bakery.

I plan to freeze it in packs of two slices and have as a treat. It makes sensational cheese on toast.

Aria999 · 18/07/2021 08:07

Mmm sourdough toast.

Back in the uk now and loving the nice bread. (Though still trying to eat a bit less of it). Had a cheese bread thing freshly baked at the co-op. Mmmm.

My MIL also makes a kickass chocolate mouse. I figure as it has alcohol in it probably won't count as sugar 🤣

RubyGoat · 18/07/2021 08:52

Morning everyone! I was on a previous thread but it fell off my TIO. I’m going to go and try to get sourdough bread this week from Waitrose - I’m low FODMAP & the only bread I am allowed is spelt sourdough. Not sure how it will agree with me as I’ve been completely gluten free for a few weeks… last time I cut out wheat, I reintroduced it & was in pain for a month. But, it was just regular wheat noodles, not spelt sourdough. So I’ve no idea.
If it’s ok I’ll start making my own. Not going through all that palaver for nothing though.

Does marmite/bovril count as very processed food? I’m getting bitten by so many midges! I don’t usually, I suspect it’s the lack of marmite in my diet, apparently they don’t like the taste/smell of people who eat it.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 18/07/2021 10:59

You walked 100 miles in a week, @Words? That's amazing!

BangingOn · 18/07/2021 11:11

I’m here to confess completely horrendous eating whilst on holiday. I started fairly well, although it was impossible to avoid oils, but kept away from wheat and refined sugar. By day three I was hungry all the time and by day four my messed up eating patterns kicked in and I was binging at every meal with 2-3 desserts from the buffet. I’ve never been good when I don’t have control over my food and there’s either restricted amounts or an abundance (thank you boarding school) but this time I really noticed it and tried to be aware of what was happening and why rather than just beating myself up.

Weirdly, as soon as I arrived home yesterday the desire to eat has vanished and I’ve slipped back into the WOE easily, although I expect to have some sugar withdrawal over the next few days.

Hopefully not too much damage has been done, but I’ve learnt a lesson about myself and all inclusive holidays!

samthebordercollie · 18/07/2021 11:46

Words 100 miles of hills is brilliant. Congratulations on getting in your shorts too! I've got the opposite - I have put on 2kg in the last week, shorts definitely tighter. I don't know why as I haven't changed eating habits that much, although last week there were a few social evenings which resulted in going off plan (one evening pizza and icecream) and too much alcohol (don't usually drink in the week). I've just started HRT and wasn't sure if it was due to that too. Oh well, back on plan today.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 18/07/2021 14:58

Wow Words that's some mileage. I fell off the wagon this weekend. Beers Friday night and ate shite yesterday. Normal service has resumed today.

Tiredandbored · 18/07/2021 15:41

We are on holiday this week and I'm not quite sure how it will impact on my eating. Plus points are it is self-catering and I've already planned meals that are good for this WoE. It will also be more active than usual as we've planned lots of outdoor activities with the kids - climbing mountains, forest walks, open farm visits etc.

Downside is it's a holiday, so there will be fish and chips on at least one occasion as well as other treats such as ice cream.

I have packed my lunchbox so I can take a salad with me when having sandwiches for the picnics for the kids.

No scales for the whole week, will assess the impact on my weight when I return!

HighlandCowbag · 18/07/2021 15:51

I'm doing exactly the same Tired. Have a tupperware box for salads, been shopping this morning and bought lots of salad and tapas and cheese and tuna. Have also bought pizzas which are having tonight. Am going to have a salad with it, and coleslaw which isn't ideal but better than the kebab and chips we ended up ordering last night. Which was vile, expensive and woke me up at 5am with horrible stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

I really don't want to eat stuff like that all week. But was first night, we didn't realise how early everything closed and hadn't been shopping or anything.

I will treat myself but not to crap food that makes me ill 🤢.

Words · 18/07/2021 17:38

On thé mileage, thank you. Part of the reason is below Grin It's not a regular occurrence, mind! And fortunately not as hot as it has been today.

I think I am living proof that strength and fitness do return, however out of condition you have been - and believe me I was out of condition. Could barely bend over to lace my boots last autumn, let alone climb hills.

Ahh he's gorgeous, Words! Border collies definitely keep you fit, they need do much exercise. Great photo!

This thread looks interesting! I went low carb November 2019 to lose a stone for an operation and it stuck. I've lost about 2 stone since then so not a very fast weight loss but it is consistent. I'm 50lb down from my top ever weight and would like to lose another 75lb. I just try to eat unprocessed food but I do make some low carb treats with erythritol and Stevia sometimes. Made low carb ice cream today Blush
