Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

Words I find if I sit down with my food and tell myself it's just a snack and I can have more if I want, I eat less. For instance if I want something for lunch, but don't have time there and then to make something like a salad, I will have a bit of cheese and a few pickled onions and maybe a slice of cooked meat. Its always been enough! I genuinely think we don't need 3 meals a day, we just have to train ourselves to recognise that. Eating mindfully is difficult with UPFs but wholefood is a lot easier.

Yesterday was OK. Had a few slices of cooked chicken for lunch, I wasn't that hungry and didn't have that until 4pm. Then we had our takeaway treat night and I had lamb saag and rice. No bread but I did have a bit of poppadom. I think decent indian food fits quite well with the woe as they use ghee rather than veg oil.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, @HighlandCowbag—UPFs can’t be eaten mindfully because they override all our normal cues.

Tiredandbored · 11/07/2021 08:34

I listened to a podcast by the Van Tulleken brothers in which they discuss UPFs. One of them is very overweight (I think in the obese BMI category) and the other is not despite them being identical twins.

It's just been released, so I could only listen to the first show, but everything they were saying supports what we've been discussing about UPFs and the impact they have on our bodies. I would recommend it if anyone is wanting more info (and reasons not to eat UPFs!)

Tiredandbored · 11/07/2021 08:53

"A thorough examination" by Drs Chris and Xand Van Tulleken.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 11/07/2021 10:14

I know Dr J mentions the microbiome, but that it is a relatively new area of research. Dr Tim Spectre from UCL has done a lot of twin research which shows how UP and food low in fibre has a significant effect on the microbiome so identical twins can have very different weights etc

badlydrawncat · 11/07/2021 10:41

I do wonder if some of our collective problems come because we have the luxury of having a great choice of food and we fall into the trap of thinking that all meal-times should be 'occasions' and all meals should be in some way special - when actually most meals just need to be fuel for your body.
Obviously for 'our collective problems' read badlydrawncat. Most if the time I need to just bloody shove that chicken breast in the oven, eat it with the broccoli that needs using up, it actually didn't matter if l 'don't fancy it'. Stop farting around trying to make it into a restaurant style extravaganza. (Other protein and vegetables are available).

Morning all
For those interested in the gut microbiome there is an excellent article in the Guardian today

That looks really interesting.

I'm finding that I'm hungry most of the time. I'm fed up of eggs and really struggle with lunch.

I've a bean chilli to take to work tomorrow as I'm sick of a salad that leaves me feeling hungry. I was obviously very reliant on bread to fill me up! Haven't been able to find any oatcakes without oil either. I'm feeling very restricted which I know shouldn't be the case. I'll go and look at the recipe thread and see if that gives me inspiration!!

badlydrawncat · 11/07/2021 14:22

I fill up with oily/fatty foods, especially for salads. Oily dressings, avocados, antipasti, mayo, hummus. Oil isn't a problem as long as it's not refined or unbalanced omega-wise

samthebordercollie · 11/07/2021 14:27

@WeWantAMackerelNotASprat
Can you add lentils, chickpeas, butter beans etc to your salad? That would make them more filling (and your gut microbiome would be very 😃)

Oh good idea. I used to roast chickpeas, carrots and parsnips but I think of that as a winter dish but no need as that would go well with salad. Thanks

Are any of you members of the Zoe Covid research thing? I get updates about their eating stuff too from there too. This is one I got yesterday. Ohh, is anyone else doing the blue poo thing that came through a couple of weeks ago? us13.campaign-archive.com/?u=48d605e2453cb0ad3892e077d&id=b5478ab0c3&e=6e83f7290a

The Zoe main website

Most of the stuff is only available in the USA at the moment, but they're looking to launch in the UK this year - judging by the publicity, I guess that's close.

I was part of the original Predict study - it was really interesting and I now have the personalised app. Mainly a Mediterranean type diet for me, but it was really interesting seeing how I respond to certain foods. Generally the lower the processing and higher the fibre, the better.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 11/07/2021 14:49

I also did the blue poo test, originally when I went for the testing (took 8 days Blush) and recently took 18hrs Grin, so massive difference which I noticed quite quickly after changing my diet.

badlydrawncat · 11/07/2021 15:12

That's amazing! I only heard about it when they sent me the email a few weeks ago. I was at 20 hours a couple of weeks ago, I haven't done it again, maybe I'll try it this week :-)

I did the diet analysis in the Covid app last year (I think) and was pleasantly surprised at the results. Covid was a massive wakeup for me. I'd slid into some bad habits late 2019 after recovering (ironically) from a bout of pneumonia. Going back to work after that and lots of stress in work from late 2019 to the start of Covid really messed up my health. The prospect of getting Covid really made me take a serious look at what I'd slid into and prompted me to dig out all of my more beneficial habits.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 11/07/2021 15:33

20hrs is fantastic, and it sounds like your diet is good!

Tiredandbored · 11/07/2021 16:30

@WeWantAMackerelNotASprat, I find my lunches are very filling, but I do add quite a lot of protein which helps. Often it's fish - pan-fried cod for example (if I'm at home) or a tin of mackerel or some tuna added to my salad (if I'm at work).

I often will have some berries with Greek yoghurt after a salad as well.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 11/07/2021 16:40

@Tiredandbored I really like fish so that would be a good idea to add that in too. I think once I get into the swing of it I'll be ok but at the moment I'm really missing bread! Especially as I perfected (I'm modest aren't I 😉) a lovely loaf in lockdown.

I may experiment with spelt which I know is still wheat but it's an older grain and might be more digestible I think!

HighlandCowbag · 11/07/2021 16:45

I'm off bread atm, but saw an ancient grains loaf in Staniforths which is a chain bakery (I think) in the south Yorkshire area and I think M and S do something similar. Im going to try some at some point.

SulisMinerva · 11/07/2021 16:58

I make a spelt loaf every couple of weeks. It is a grain which hasn’t been messed about with as much as wheat. So far, I haven’t experienced the bloating issues I get with ‘normal’ loaves.

badlydrawncat · 11/07/2021 17:55

I like spelt bread a lot, spelt pasta is great too. Tesco used to sell it but it's disappeared over the last couple of years. When I make bread I often make spelt bread but it's a real slippery slope to me eating loads of bread, it's sad because I've made bread ever since I was a child and I really enjoy making it. I bought some einkorn and some khorasan to play with. I've used khorasan before but along with ordinary bread flour. I'm in two minds if I'm to be trusted with it Hmm

NowYouListenToMeFella · 11/07/2021 20:18

The blue poo test sounds interesting.

First week almost done for me. Feeling good. It is so nice not to calorie count and eat full fat cheese.

I have jeans on today that I could barely close last week. They fit much better. There is a bit of space in the waist band.

Thanks for the name of the podcast, I'll give that a listen.

Aria999 · 11/07/2021 21:25

@WeWantAMackerelNotASprat

Do you like cheese? I find a generous amount of cheese always fills me up. I had an entire slab of feta all to myself with my tomato and avocado the other day.
