Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

Nicely done with the emojis, Sam Grin

A big nsv for me will be not uncomfortably squishing my tummy when I’m on my bike. It gets in the way of my legs 😕

veryblearyeyed · 08/07/2021 13:42

I’ve just eaten some bacon that advertises itself as natural. It just had bacon, water, something I’ve forgotten but a real thing, and then “spice” and “smoke.” Wondering if those last two cover a multitude of UPF-type ingredients. It was actually very tasty but the pieces shrank massively.

Words · 08/07/2021 13:47

Thanks again all ! Grin
I love this thread.
What is an NSV?

TheLeadbetterLife · 08/07/2021 14:45

The breakfast patisserie just made me feel slightly nauseous in the end, though it was delicious. I don’t know if it was the wheat and sugar, or eating at 8am when I don’t normally eat until lunchtime.

behappy38 · 08/07/2021 15:08

I have just seen that the print version of the book has an Appendix on Glycemic Load and Omega 6/3 ratios in common foods. But it has been removed from the Audible version.

I only listened to the book, so missed out on this info...no wonder I am struggling a bit to choose which foods to eat!

Aria999 · 08/07/2021 15:11

I think NSV = non scales victory? (Or similar)

Aria999 · 08/07/2021 17:19

Felt a bit meh about lunch today. Didn't really feel like any specific thing though i was hungry.

Ended up having bacon and avocado again which was nice but is the third day in a row I have had avocado for lunch.

Don't exactly miss sandwiches and toast even so but they were easy!

Tiredandbored · 08/07/2021 17:20

Yes, NSV is a non-scale victory, so a milestone or achievement or 'ta-daaa' moment that is not weight-loss. Being able to get into a smaller pair of jeans, being able to zip up your boots to the top, not swiping all the cutlery off the table behind with your arse when you side-shuffle past a table in the cafe speaking from experience

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 08/07/2021 17:30

@Aria999 I'm still struggling with lunches and also feeling hungry. I need more carbs and think I'm missing my bread!!

I was so hungry after my lunch (salad with egg, beetroot, humous (homemade) that I had a corn cake which is probably not allows and a babybel. I should have boiled some potatoes for lunch but because I've got salmon and potatoes for tea I didn't want them twice. I'm also eating so many eggs it's not helping my stomach!!

BangingOn · 08/07/2021 21:19

I hit two stone loss today (admittedly I weighed after a run to make sure maximum water loss Grin ) but I am really happy. Also slightly nervous as we are due to fly to Menorca on Saturday and I’m worried about navigating the all inclusive food offerings. But I am also trying to remind myself that it’s a long term way of eating and not to panic over a single week.

Aria999 · 08/07/2021 21:41

Congrats @BangingOn that's awesome!

BangingOn · 08/07/2021 22:23

@Aria999 thank you! I still need to lose another 2-3 stone but it’s nice to see the loss on the scales.

veryblearyeyed · 09/07/2021 01:41

Well done, @BangingOn!

HighlandCowbag · 09/07/2021 07:05

Wow well done Banging!

I had a disaster yesterday. Had an egg mayo sarnie for early lunch cos rushing around, hungover cos football, was busy blah blah blah. 3 hours later horrific stomach cramps, wind, bloating and diarrhoea. Really think my tummy can't digest certain things anymore. Mainly wheat I think but was also ill like that after chinese food.

It makes me think Ive always struggled but my body has adapted but compensated with a rubbish metabolism.

Words · 09/07/2021 07:14

Fantastic @Bangingon !

Yesterday was interesting. For my special dinner I chose: garlic prawns followed by a mix of grilled lamb chops and lamb skewers, then a ridiculous piece of creamy amaretto cake.

The meal came with seeded bread, which I found easy to resist, and bulgur wheat, which I really like. Had a couple of spoons full of that. Also made a big green salad to go with it and ate a lot of that. ( we had the meal as a take out)

But the cake. It really wasn't very nice at all, but of course I just ploughed on and ate it all. I felt so bloated and uncomfortable afterwards. Habit.

Interestingly though, I slept very well indeed - eight and a half hours. I overslept in fact and will have to re jig my day a bit. Since starting eating this way I haven't slept quite as well as I usually do. I wonder if this is a result of lowering sugar and carbs, or just coincidence?

HighlandCowbag · 09/07/2021 08:56

Ooo, just hopped on the scales and despite lots of alcohol over the last week or so, plus a few days off plan cos hangover I'm still down another lb. Nearly a stone gone so far! Will stall a bit as holiday next week but I am definitely never eating bread again. Won't rule out completely the odd pita which I have eaten without issues. But sliced white is definitely out.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 09/07/2021 11:54

Well done BangingOn and HighlandCowbag.

Surviving the first five days without too much hassle. Last night I was really craving a fizzy drink or a squash, anything other than water basically.

I have to say I am really enjoying cooking again and trying different things. Will give the beef rendang a go over the weekend and a chicken, red pepper and sweet potato curry.

Definitely feeling a lot less bloated and not as lethargic as I was last week.

veryblearyeyed · 10/07/2021 01:10

Quiet round here today!

Good news on the loss, @HighlandCowbag.

@Words, why do we just carry on eating even when we don’t want it and/or it’s not very nice? My parents never made us finish our plates so I don’t have that guilt. I just see food and need to eat it until it’s gone 😬

I’ve been having branflakes every three days or so for the fibre. I’m definitely hungrier for lunch sooner but it’s helping. I’ve got an unhelpful ick about ground flax and all the things like chia and psyllium that expand. In other words, I have them all the cupboard but daren’t eat them.

Still off the Coke, has two sips of DS’s tonight. Off to BIL this weekend though, and he always has a whole fridge full of pop.

Words · 10/07/2021 06:39

Excellent work on the coke front @veryblearyeyed !

I have thé ick re the chia seeds so know exactly what you mean. Ground flax I like though.

I am a half pound down this week, despite my birthday blow out and cake, a day of stress eating, and chocolate. Ten months to target at that rate, which feels a long time, but things are going in the right direction and I remind myself it's a marathon, not a sprint, corny as that may sound.

I'm not sure re the over eating. It's largely habit, but unlike very I do have some residual stuff about being made to finish the plate as a child, and a baked in horror inherited from my parents' wartime experience of 'wasting' food.

It's a double whammy: I love food and my portions are larger than they need to be; and also I suspect my off switch around sugar, however unpleasant the concoction, is very faulty. And I probably eat too quickly too,so my brain doesn't register when I've reach satiation.

Tiredandbored · 10/07/2021 07:51

Morning all! Congrats on the weight loss @BangingOn and @HighlandCowbag! Well done also on the coke progress @veryblearyeyed, it's a hard battle!

We took the kids out for a walk on the beach yesterday and stopped for an ice cream. I did take one, but I don't feel bad about it as it was an occasional treat and it's still important (for me) to join in with family activities and not be so rigid with this WoE that I can't participate.

We're going out for a picnic with them today and then having a BBQ this evening, but it's easy enough to take a salad for the picnic and have no bun with my burger, so should be fine staying on-plan with my meals today.

samthebordercollie · 10/07/2021 09:47

@Words regarding the eating too much and eating too quickly, have you ever tried taking glucomannan(Konjac root) supplement before meals? It is supposed to increase your feeling of satiety so you eat less and eat more slowly. It has other good side effects too, lowering cholestrol. It's the only weight loss supplement approved by the European health commission.

Words · 10/07/2021 10:00

Ooh that's interesting Sam . I will look into it, thanks. Although I think my gluttony will over ride most things to be fair! Grin
