Mutual support thread for those currently losing or working towards losing a lot of weight

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 14/03/2021 21:53

This is a mutual support thread for anyone who wants (and needs) to lose a lot of weight, is mid way through losing a lot of weight, or is nearing the end of a big weight loss and wants to continue to support and be supported as maintenance approaches.

The previous thread has been massively helpful to regular posters, as we share both our losses and our plateau or gains, congratulate or console, and talk about what works for us while understanding that different things work for different people, and we are all different ages, all have different families/ households/ people to plan around, different commitments, different working lives and different health conditions which partly determine our approaches.

We are all on this journey together - this thread is for us to encourage one another, post updates, chat about what we're doing, how we're doing, share stories and thoughts and sometimes wander slightly off topic if we want, but everyone posting should be somewhere along the journey towards escaping high BMI obesity.

The previous thread was started by someone who no longer posts and initially asked how to lose 9 stone - it developed into a support thread for people with varying amounts left to lose but all of whom started out with at least 5 or 6 stone + / 30 or 35 kg + to lose, very roughly...

No links to selling sites or unsolicited "helpful" lectures please - mutual support from existing and new posters all actually living this big weight loss now, or just starting out, welcome!

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme - huge well done on staying the same - I think I remember that's your aim from now on? For me, I've come to realise that over the holidays managing to stay the same weight is a good achievement. I've spent this weekend with my in-laws and managed not to eat my own weight in junk food...an achievement in itselfGrin.

WeightlossKin · 16/08/2021 19:12

@BippityBoppity87 how are you doing now? Has the hair loss stopped?

@alphaechokiwi well done STS and for not over indulging on your weekend with the in laws! I'm jealous of your get-away life style!

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme well done staying the same 😊 sounds like you've got a very busy life too! It does have to be lifelong and live-able! I'm inspired by your attitude to it and it's given me a bit of a head wobble.

I lost 2lb this week, so have lost the 2lb I gained last week. I cried a bit unnecessarily when I got home. I thought the 2lb last week was period weight gain so expected to lose 2lb+ this week. It sort of feels like a weeks worth of effort has been pointless but I guess I could have easily gone up again. Especially as I wasn't in control of my food Saturday or Sunday, because life goes on and I can't avoid all social things forever. I just have so much to lose to be referable for IVF and feel I'm never going to get there. I'm not even half way and it's taken me 8.5months to get this far.
Someone at SW lost 7.5lbs in their first week. I'm not sure if staying to group is healthy for me as I can't not compare myself and wonder what's wrong with me. I keep telling myself this is a sustainable loss but actually I'd much rather get there quicker and worry about keeping it off after 😬 not the right attitude is it?
Woe is me!! I will drown my sorrows in a bath with far too many bubbles. 🛀

alphaechokiwi · 18/08/2021 09:02

@WeightlossKin - thank you! I wish I was going to warm exotic places on my 'jetsetting' trips Grin.
We'll done on losing the 2lbs. Summer is a difficult time to be losing weight. I got into a bit of a panic about it but eventually reset my goal to simply staying the same between July and September. Anything else is just unrealistic for me.
Re the 7.5lb loss - I don't think it's biologically possible for an adult human female to lose that much fat in 7 days ...lots of that will be water. Meaning that it's either the very start of someone's journey or they've fallen off the wagon, eaten a lot of junk and are getting started again. But if you find it demoralising, is it worth re-evaluating what works for you right now, and trying something new - even for a few weeks? There are lots of weight loss communities offering support on line - Intermittent fasting / Michael Moseley's Fast 800, or low carb / keto type groups, or maybe My Fitness Pal type approaches. I know it feels so daunting, and like such a long journey. But things that are important and meaningful in life often do take big committment and effort. It will be so worth it for you in the end.

BippityBoppity87 · 18/08/2021 13:22

Hi @WeightlossKin. Still have some hair loss. I'm also absolutely exhausted all the time and foggy brained. Never used to be this bad, but it's definitely getting worse and hot and sweaty, absolutely sweating buckets most days. I should hear about how I got on at the sleep clinic in a couple weeks. But part of me is now wondering if it's a menopausal thing? I'm 34, and I read that premenopause symptoms can occur as much as up to 10 years beforehand. I don't want to mention it to the GP, as they might think I'm a hypochondriac, and I don't think it's something that shows up on a blood test anyway this early if it was. Plus I have bipolar and ADHD, so think I'd just be fobbed off as those things being the cause. But I'm just so tired all the time now. I'll just have to wait and see what the sleep clinic says I suppose. All blood tests I have haven't shown anything

I haven't weighed myself this week yet. But was still 17st 3lbs a week and a half ago. Too scared to check! Will have to bite the bullet tomorrow morning

SnowyMouse · 18/08/2021 18:47

I've lost 14 lbs now, since the 19th of June. Down to 14 stone 4.

alphaechokiwi · 18/08/2021 19:13

@SnowyMouse - amazing result! Well done.
@BippityBoppity87 - I'm sorry you are feeling so rubbish and I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Have you asked your pharmacy for a medication review? It's a long shot I know....
Good luck with your weigh in tomorrow x

SnowyMouse · 18/08/2021 19:22

Thanks @alphaechokiwi ! Just need to lose the next 5!

alphaechokiwi · 20/08/2021 06:16

I've stayed the same again this week, which is what I was aiming for after the weekend away. I'm pretty pleased that I've held it steady through all the holiday stuff. I'm going to my home country today for 10 days and will see my family and friends for the first time since before the pandemic. Lots of celebrating on the cards but I'm aiming to maintain if possible.

UpOnDown · 20/08/2021 14:13

well done @alphaechokiwi on maintaining. I hope you manage it whilst you're away.

BippityBoppity87 · 20/08/2021 17:20

Haven't got round to weighing myself yet 😬 I know I need to. Been using the most ridiculous excuses. Will definitely do a weigh in tomorrow. Hope everyone has a nice weekend

BippityBoppity87 · 20/08/2021 17:22

Like, well I've had a coffee now. I can't possibly weigh myself after a coffee Hmm but I'm hoping there is some logic in my madness!

Well done @alphaechokiwi on maintaining

BippityBoppity87 · 21/08/2021 12:49

So just braced the scales. Back down to 17st on the dot. But I had a big mug of coffee before I realised I was supposed to weight myself! So hopefully I'm lighter than what it said Grin wishful thinking Was 17st 3lbs two weeks ago when I was weighed at hospital. So dropped 3lbs again Hmmoh well, can't complain about that I suppose, but I haven't changed anything drastic afaik, so who knows

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend

SnowyMouse · 21/08/2021 15:48

Well done, 3lbs is good. I'm down to 14 stone 3 now.

Angliski · 21/08/2021 18:51

@WeightlossKin just popping in to say that I skidded into the ivf cut off needing to lose two stone- I did it with the fast 800. I tried for months just regularly but no joy and suddenly something clicked in. Happy to chat about it if you’d like to- I know how stressful the weight loss pressure can be.

Ps. I do have a son now
Pps abd also five stone to lose!

I’ve definitely lost this last week or two but haven’t got my normal scales so need to wait to pop into the pharmacy round the corner tomorrow or Monday. Last weigh in was 14 st 8 so really just trying to get under 14 before I leave Italy in two weeks time

Zebracat · 22/08/2021 10:23

Hello everyone. Just back from a truly lovely holiday in Somerset but now weighing 98.2 kilos. In July, I was 95.5 so still going the wrong way.
However, no more holidays booked, altho I do have a couple of social things this week. I will try to stick to salad and fish.
The good news is that schools go back tomorrow here, so there is some hope of reestablishing a healthy routine.
I’m feeling quite down about it. I know self loathing is not healthy, and I know that a lot of people gain 3 kilos in summer, but still. Already some of the unspeakable obesity issues are coming back, the joint pain, the raw skin under my belly, upset tummy, insomnia, depression. Being obese is hardcore!
I had an almost good day yesterday, with no snacking, but then couldn’t sleep when a chronic condition flared so had to get up for pain relief which must be taken with food. Restricted it to a banana though. Really glad others are doing so well. You give me hope. And commiserations to those who aren’t doing so well. I think if I can just keep coming here, I Stand a chance of getting back on track.

SnowyMouse · 23/08/2021 17:54

Does anyone else find fizzy drinks help them not feel hungry?

WeightlossKin · 23/08/2021 19:38

Thanks for the support ☺️
@alphaechokiwi I think you're right regarding a 7.5lb loss in one week. When I joined slimming world I was unrealistic to expect such huge first/second week results as I'd only made minor changes to what I was already doing. I like the routine of going and weighing in but I'm just not going to stay to the group very often. Super well done for staying the same! I hope your ten days in your home is as successful, but after so long I hope you fully enjoy it as much as possible. How lovely that you finally get to go!

@BippityBoppity87 hooray for getting down to 17 ❤️ I do honestly think you've been a bit strict on your body based on what you've said, so think it's natural to go through a week or so of no movement before a drop. It must just be your body working it out.

@SnowyMouse well done on the weight loss so far! I do find fizzy drinks make me feel full (see also: bloated and gassy). I do find once they're gone, I crave sweets though.

@Angliski really appreciate your comments and positive IVF outcome 😊 I will keep the fast 800 in mind. I think I need to get super organised if I want to incorporate that! I'll be interested to hear how your weight loss is going when you can weigh in! 🤞

@Zebracat I'm sorry you're feeling down about your weight. That weight will come straight back off! You've just got back off holiday and have made some lovely memories. You know you can do it, don't let the scales ruin your wonderful holiday. Definitely no beating yourself up over an extra banana!!

tibni · 24/08/2021 08:04

Can I join (againBlush) please. I am the queen of denial but recent photos have been eye opening
Lots of excuses as to why weight increasing but realistically life isn't going to get easier any time soon and I'm getting bigger as each month passes
Restarted my fitness pal and need to stay accountable but realistic Smile

SnowyMouse · 24/08/2021 14:45

Welcome @tibni I use mfp too.

SnowyMouse · 24/08/2021 18:33

Does anyone else use the happy scale app, it smooths your loss so you can see the trend it's taking rather than just being spiky?

wombatsandaplant · 24/08/2021 20:21

Hey can I join.

I started at 176.3kg and now I weigh 168.2kg. And want to get down to around 85-95kg.

I was always very overweight, used to average around 120-130kg. I gained around 50kg due to a medication I was on. That’s why I’m so unbelievably heavy right now.

I go to the gym twice a week with a personal trainer and swimming at the gym pool once a week.

I’m remarkably fit for my size, if I do say so myself lol.

wombatsandaplant · 24/08/2021 20:22

@SnowyMouse I use the happy scale app. I love it,

UpOnDown · 24/08/2021 20:25

It's great isn't it? @wombatsandaplant

wombatsandaplant · 24/08/2021 20:27

@UpOnDown if you’re referring to the happy scale app then yes totally. I realised because if the app I’d lost 2.7kg this las5 week.

BippityBoppity87 · 25/08/2021 10:11

Just went on the scales. I've somehow put on 2lbs since Saturday lol. No idea how. I've been calorie counting and walking about 15,000 steps a day. This is quite odd. Not really sure what else to do. Starting to get me down a bit now
