Mutual support thread for those currently losing or working towards losing a lot of weight

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 14/03/2021 21:53

This is a mutual support thread for anyone who wants (and needs) to lose a lot of weight, is mid way through losing a lot of weight, or is nearing the end of a big weight loss and wants to continue to support and be supported as maintenance approaches.

The previous thread has been massively helpful to regular posters, as we share both our losses and our plateau or gains, congratulate or console, and talk about what works for us while understanding that different things work for different people, and we are all different ages, all have different families/ households/ people to plan around, different commitments, different working lives and different health conditions which partly determine our approaches.

We are all on this journey together - this thread is for us to encourage one another, post updates, chat about what we're doing, how we're doing, share stories and thoughts and sometimes wander slightly off topic if we want, but everyone posting should be somewhere along the journey towards escaping high BMI obesity.

The previous thread was started by someone who no longer posts and initially asked how to lose 9 stone - it developed into a support thread for people with varying amounts left to lose but all of whom started out with at least 5 or 6 stone + / 30 or 35 kg + to lose, very roughly...

No links to selling sites or unsolicited "helpful" lectures please - mutual support from existing and new posters all actually living this big weight loss now, or just starting out, welcome!

@alphaechokiwi. It is a very generous offer isn’t it. I have been looking at that jumpsuit on the toast website, I do love it. And I keep putting a dress in a basket. But I now have the national collection of olive/ khaki/ emerald dresse,, because I want to use the accessories I bought for the first dress. , I have 2 that can’t be returned, and 2 that I’m keeping even though they don’t work for the occasion. And I have a dress of sorts, it’s just a bit thin and cheap. I was hoping to get a frock I would love and wear for years, but instead,I’ve spent a fortune on stuff that is wrong and sickened myself. I have a feeling that I am now incapable of making a considered decision. so I’ll wear the one that sort of works. And remind myself that another10 kilos will take me right out of the Nomansland between “normal” and plus size.

@WheresMyTweezers. Welcome. And sorry for the clothing derail( sure there’s a pun in there somewhere).

alphaechokiwi · 21/06/2021 08:30

Welcome @WheresMyTweezers - there are a few people on this thread following a type of 'no S' approach. Wishing you every success.
@Zebracat - if you have something you are reasonably ok with wearing you can really swank it up with some nice accessories, get your hair done, indulge in some posh make up.... I wish the S&B plus size thread was still active because some of those ladies were amazing at that kind of thing and totally got the size /confidence issues. Maybe try to resurrect it for some help. I think it fell dormant around April/May because the weather was too cold and everyone was bored of jumpers and jeans. I hope you find something to feel comfortable and amazing in.

alphaechokiwi · 21/06/2021 08:54

@ScottishBeth - keeping my fingers crossed for you. A STS would be a great result for a week like that.

BippityBoppity87 · 21/06/2021 12:34

@Zebracat If you can, have a look on SHEIN. They have some lovely wedding guest dresses on there. I've never bought from them, so don't know what the sizing is like, but it looks reasonably priced and I've heard good things about it

BippityBoppity87 · 21/06/2021 12:36

Plus if you scroll down to the reviews, some people post pictures. So you get a better idea of what it will look like on you if that makes sense

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 21/06/2021 14:01

Zebracat I've just been looking at the dresses and I don't actually think you'll want them - they're all synthetic materials although I definitely remembered the viscose ones as cotton Blush also they're all either patterns or black and white/ solud navy - nothing like the colours you've described. I must admit I don't really "get" Toast's appeal, though I like Wrap tops and linen trousers... but I think my taste in dresses might not match yours Blush

WheresMyTweezers welcome and good luck with your recovery from injury. I only walk and swim - don't even have an injury to recover from, just don't want to do any other type of exercise. I just keep walking further and further Grin

These two are both 22s and nice but too wintery/ dark for a summer wedding.

Oh Hare, with all you have to do, you did that for me. Thank you. I don’t mind viscose actually, it’s made from wood pulp and is reasonably breathable. I don’t like the wetsuit material dresses though.. I think I am now at the stage f having no clue what my taste s. The problem is that I bought a botanical print kimono, with greens and powder pink. I really want to use it but it makes everything impossible. . I don’t like dresses in all over pink because of looking naked from a distance, which leaves the linenish background colour and earthy greens.I absolutely love floral patterns, but there is that large lady covered in roses look which it does seem important to avoid, so the plain dress patterned jacket seemed better.. I think Imght put the dress I’m not sure about on with accessories tomorrow and resurrect the old plus size thread and ask for honest opinions. I loved the jumpsuit Alpha suggested but don’t want to throw good money after bad, and not sure my conventional daughter would approve!
Thanks so much for taking that trouble for me!

Zebracat · 21/06/2021 14:34

I do like 2 of those, not so much the cerise though. But I would have to start all over again with accessories...

BippityBoppity87 · 23/06/2021 16:20

Hi everyone

So I went on the scales this morning and I've lost another 2lbs! I'm impressed considering I devoured a whole packet of cookies last night 🤭 I'm going to have to tell my partner to stop buying them haha

Anyway, hope you're all well

alphaechokiwi · 23/06/2021 17:53

@BippityBoppity87 - congratulations on your loss

WheresMyTweezers · 24/06/2021 10:19

Good loss @BippityBoppity87 !

I'm weighing daily at the moment and it's showing 6lb in 11 days which I suppose I'm happy with but the daily weighing is messing with my head! I should be really happy with pretty much 1lb every two days but:

  1. the loss isn't even - most of the loss came in the first few days so I'm worrying I've peaked and I'll be lucky to lose 0.5lb a month (and considering I have a lot to lose, I assumed I'd have fairly consistent loss for the first few weeks at least).
  2. I don't like the fluctuations - one day this week I gained 2lb for no apparent reason.

I need to bear in mind that I have been out for a meal, had takeaway one night (although a heathy-ish choice) and had cake on father's day - which was also a bread heavy day so all things considered, total loss so far is probably good as my body has probably been a bit slow in catching up on the indulgences rather than framing it as "well I've been strict this week and it hasn't worked" - that was kind of my intention behind the initial daily weighing, to see the fluctuations and work out what does/doesn't have an impact - I just didn't think I would hate what I see quite so much!

Ah well, will revert to weekly weighing soon.

Hope you're all staying motivated and seeing lovely losses!

BippityBoppity87 · 24/06/2021 10:48

Thank you @WheresMyTweezers Smile

Yeah I used to weigh daily and realised I started getting a bit obsessed with it and was having more or less the same results as you. I hit a plateau for about 3 weeks for no apparent reason as well, then lost 3lbs. So I think it does happen and not because you're necessarily doing anything wrong

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 24/06/2021 10:51

BippityBoppity87 well done! I can't remember the last time I ate a biscuit Sad ... not really Sad properly actually as the craving has gone, and I remain someone who's bad at having just one of anything!

OP posts:
UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 24/06/2021 10:57

WheresMyTweezers weight loss is pretty much never even especially when you're looking at daily weights! That's an astonishingly fast loss, not something to just be meh and a bit disatisfied with!

OP posts:
UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 24/06/2021 11:07

On the weight never being even subject - I got up with the kids after four hours sleep this morning and weighed 74.5 kg (almost a kg more than last week) then after they left for school went back to bed (night shift tonight) and when I got up again after three more hours sleep I weighed 72.8 kg! So I lost 0.7 kg (1.5 lb) in three hours by sleeping...

I think the first weight was still my end of the day weight from yesterday and the second my true morning weight ConfusedGrin

Still what's going on with that? Its all mad ... We definitely aren't machines, and metabolism is so complex. Expecting very even weight loss is guaranteed to lead to discouragement, we really have to take a long term view - maybe make a graph or spreadsheetlike alphaechokiwi .

OP posts:
alphaechokiwi · 24/06/2021 11:17

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme I once lost over a kg in a few hours. I got up early, weighed myself, went back to bed for a few hours sleep and weighed myself again. I mean how is that physically possible?! Our bodies are strange and wonderful things.
Personally I can't weigh myself daily. I couldn't give mental head space to the fluctuations.
@WheresMyTweezers 6lbs in under 2 weeks is very speedy.
Well done everyone on your losses x

MamaNewtNewt · 24/06/2021 13:30

Hi All. Just catching up on the thread snd all of your news so I'm sure I'll have more replies later. Welcome @WheresMyTweezers and thanks for the offer, I might just take you up on that.

I'm home now and recovering from the second op. I get my cast taken off and get a boot on Monday so will be able to put a little bit of weight on that and be able to get about a bit more.

I've managed to eat fairly well (although the takeaways have continued esp as DH has been juggling everything and looking after me too). I've had a tiny bit of sugar but not much and portion sizes are low.

I managed to hop on the scales today and am down 5.8lbs / 2.6kg over the past few weeks which is great considering I've been laid up for nearly a month now. I'm also really chuffed that I am below 17st for the first time in a long time. Overall loss is now 1st 5lbs / 8.6kg Grin

alphaechokiwi · 24/06/2021 14:08

@MamaNewtNewt - lovely to hear from you. I'm glad all is going well for you. And really well done on your weight loss and breaking the 17stone milestone.

Rebuildingconfidence · 24/06/2021 16:42

Right, I really think I have reached my limit.

We took some family photos the other day and I wasn't happy.

I have just snacked on sliced cucumber. Trying to feed my insatiable need to move my jaws but with fewer calories.

I have been sleeping earlier and better which I think is helping. Also diet lemonade, again to try and "fill up".

I had planned to have lost weight by 5th July as I am seeing friends I haven't seen for a long time.

I've wasted my chance to do that, but I have ten days to try and make a dent, so to speak.

Thank goodness for this thread and all who post here.
