Dress size v BMI

Purely out of curiosity, what dress size are you or do you think you will be when you're at the top of your healthy BMI range? (And middle and bottom if you know).
I'm 5'8"
BMI 25 = size 12/14
BMI 22 -= size 8
BMI 19 = size 4 (I'm guessing - never gonna happen!)

Actually I was wrong my BMI is 23.7. That .3 is very important

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/08/2020 18:27

@SellFridges

I’m always a 14. BMI is hovering at 30 (so yes, technically obese and I will get it down) but still a 14.

Before I had the children my BMI was about 25 and I was still a 14.

This suggests weight lifting may help. I was similar when younger - more fat than muscle and so it often took 3 stones of weight loss to drop a single dress size. Then I began strength yoga / pilates / weights / climbing and found myself dropping sizes a lot quicker.

My BMI right now is 26 and I am a 14/16 as I haven’t been to the gym since baby was born and have been eating lactation cookies like no tomorrow so have turned into a massive ball of flab. I am usually a BMI 23/24 and a size 12/14 but the aim is to get to BMI 21/22 permanently for my health. I’ll be around a 10/12 at that weight.

Stoichio · 04/08/2020 18:52

5'5''

BMI and sizes (all within the last two years)
36 - size 20
33 - size 18
30 - size 16
28 - size 14-16
26 - size 12-14

Lowest I have ever been (over age 21) was BMI 22.5 and I was a size 12 then (but that in my late twenties - twenty years ago) so maybe more like a 10-12 now.

ChristmasKitties · 04/08/2020 19:02

Wow this really goes to show that body shapes really do impact sizes!

I’m 5”6, and weigh 84kg.

My BMI is 29 and I’m a size 20.

Unfortunately I’ve let 3 stone sneak on in the last 3 years because my portion sizes are too big. Really need to motivate myself!

riotlady · 04/08/2020 19:08

I’m 5’8. Currently BMI 37 and a size 20
When I was BMI 21 I was a size 10, I’ve never been smaller than that and I don’t think I could do it healthily.

Fressia123 · 05/08/2020 10:58

So you can see BMI doesn't always relate to dress size. I'm a size 8 and BMI of 27 )and change)

Shedtheload · 07/08/2020 06:48

Omg Fressia. How tall are you if you don’t mind me asking? You look great. I’m about 27 BMI now and I think I look quite good but a voice inside my head keeps telling me that I’m kidding myself because I’m still overweight. It’s great to see a pic like yours to realise that actually you can look slim at a slightly higher BMI and it might just be due to body composition.

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 07/08/2020 06:55

Fressia123's absolutely right, you really do get exceptions to BMI. I'm a bit chubby now (not by much, I'm a size 14 and 5"10 with a naturally very curvy frame) but back before I had kids I used to be a long distance runner. I was good at it. I ate very healthily and ran about 40ks most weeks. I was a size 6-8 in bottoms and a 10 in tops (H cup breasts so could never squeeze into the same size top as bottom). My BMI was 26. So apparently I was overweight. I promise you I really wasn't, at all. I was very slim and toned - enough so that I could pull off wearing body con dresses or crop tops.

Fressia123 · 07/08/2020 07:16

I'm 5ft3 so a bit short.

Shinygreenelephant · 07/08/2020 07:37

I'm a size 10 at the moment and my BMI is 22, although I'm not sure BMI works when you're pregnant. When I was at my target weight I was size 8 and BMI around 20 and when I'd just given birth to my youngest my BMI was about 24 and I was mostly still in size 10s, 12 on my boobs sometimes.

LordOfTheOnionRings · 07/08/2020 07:38

My BMI is 38 and I am a size 18. 5 ft 4.

Pikachubaby · 07/08/2020 07:46

BMI 21-22 size 10
BMI 23- 24 size 12-14

Have never been outside these ranges

Am 6ft and a bit. At BMI 21 I was very slim (like people would ask if I was a model Grin) but that’s decades ago Smile

2155User · 07/08/2020 08:14

The sooner people learn that BMI is absolute bollocks the better.

I'm a size 10, BMI indicates I am obese.

random9876 · 07/08/2020 16:34

Am 5.4, age 43

Current BMI 25.8 (10st 10) - 10-12 (10 more because of the brands I wear, and because wearing tight stuff forces me to not get any fatter!) Look a bit of a munter though, bloody lockdown and homeschooling and snacking!
Fighting BMI 24 (19.12/10 stone) size 10
BMI 22 (hardly ever since early 20s) size 10, v lean looking though
BMI 19/20 - once in my teens, but my periods stopped so never again! Still size 10

I am really muscular and solid. I had a body scan done, and 85-90th percentile for muscle mass, 99 for bone mass. It's genetic, and I never lose those thighs and muscular shoulders, even if I put on weight. So I think hence the relatively small clothes size variation. Body scan really helped me work out what was a healthy weight for me!.

OldLace · 07/08/2020 16:38

5ft 7
bmi: 25.8
size 10 / 12 bottom 12 top (boobs) depending on brand of clothes

daisypond · 07/08/2020 16:41

BMI: 20
5’5”
Size 8, 10.

morefun · 07/08/2020 17:07

I have no idea about BMI at different dress sizes

Mine is 19. Wear an 8 or a 10 depending on what it is.

DrDetriment · 07/08/2020 17:35

5 ft 1.
BMI 22.5
Dress size 8.

TinkersTailor · 07/08/2020 22:07

I'm 5ft and 6 stone 9.
BMI 18.2 - Size 0 bottoms and 0-2 top. Vanity sizing has done me no favours; trying to buy bottoms (jeans especially) is tough!

Ikeameatballs · 07/08/2020 22:16

BMI 18.5 and size 6-8 depending upon brand.

PickAChew · 07/08/2020 22:25

I waver around bmi of 25. A 14 is loose or tight, depending which side I am, though I have a few size 12 tops, despite being an H cup, as I have quite a narrow frame. I avoid brands where I need a 16 to fit my bust as they're too big on the shoulders and the neckline is too big.

PickAChew · 07/08/2020 22:26

I'm 5'4 (shrunk from 5'5) and 50, btw.

Lallanala · 07/08/2020 22:31

5ft 2.5 inches- 9 stone 11lbs- BMI 24.5. Size 10 bottom and size 8 top. I’ve never been bigger than a size 12 even when I weighed 11 stone 12lbs! How does that work? I’ll never know.

PickAChew · 07/08/2020 22:48

I suspect you are a lot more muscular than I am.
