Anyone starting tomorrow and not planning a ''quick fix''

Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

I lost the thread! Great to read about everyone's progress, keep going all!

I am doing ok with no S but haven't weighed myself. I haven't actually weighed myself for about 10 years tbh ... I reckon I could guess acurately within 5lb what I weigh and I'm so ashamed of the amount that I can't face seeing it in black and white on the scales. I can tell if I've lost or gained weight by the waistband on my "skirt of truth".

So for me, my first meaningful target is to get to a place where I can bear to stand on the scales ... I reckon that's about half a stone away, aiming to be there by the end of September.

Food-wise, I find restricting myself not too hard. I don't have a sweet tooth so giving up sweet treats isn't an issue. My problem is wine and laziness! There isn't a form of exercise in the world that I enjoy apart from my Zumba class, which obviously isn't running at the moment.

Anyway - have a good day everyone. Will try and check in more regularly Brew.

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/07/2020 08:50

Hi @Chicchicchicchiclana! Yes, I'm not a big fan of frequent weigh ins tbh. I do think, not to sound precious, there is sometimes a lot shaming associated with weigh ins for some people. Things like WW and SW etc. I think for some people it's good fun, a bit of accountability etc, but for others it can honestly be a bit traumatic, (if that isn't too strong a word)!

Anyway, having said that, I did sneak a peak at my weight this morning and I am not 13 stone 9 lbs. So that is about 3 lbs down overall. This is a vast improvement on gaining 2 lbs on average every month for the past couple of years. I have honestly not been starving or doing anything extreme. Very little exercise - maybe it's muscle loss 🙈. If I can lose even half a lb a month, I'll be happy. I want to stick to this forever if I can.

How is everyone else?

@RubySlippers77, hope you're alright?

No loss this week (didn't weigh last week either) but my calves are speaking to me!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/07/2020 10:41

@LadyPrigsbottom
you mentioned exercises for your bad hip earlier in the thread. Can you point me in the direction of where I can read up on these? I have a painful hip, knee and occasionally ankle (touch of sciatica sometimes painful all the way down my leg) and I let it put me off exercising, which I shouldn't.

drspouse · 11/07/2020 10:45

I started with Yoga with Adrien (she has a sciatica video) and gentle walking but you really need a referral to physio.

WhistlersandJugglers · 11/07/2020 11:42

Definitely go to a physio if it's something bothering you, Chic. I had hip/pelvis issues after last baby many moons ago. The physio showed me exercises to unlock and untighten problem areas. I still do them occasionally if I feel a niggle. Going for physio regularly that year was probably the best thing I ever did health wise.

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/07/2020 11:49

Oh hip exercises? Um...I don't remember talking about this, but I do have what I think might be mild sciatica and achey hips sometimes. I had a really sore shoulder last week and had to get out of bed to do stretches in the night! Was that it maybe?

I've been doing the odd hands free yoga routine to get a stretch in without putting strain on my upper body. Only realised when I did the hands free, how much strain there was when i normally do yoga. I have skinny wee wrists, not much upper body strength and I'm heavy, so not a good combo for down dogs and chaturangas! I'm quite good at down dog, but my chaturangas / vinyasas are just horrible. No joy in them for me at this weight.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/07/2020 16:25

Oh my goodness - that's really weird. I definitely type @drspouse when I wrote that message (I know because I had to scroll back through the thread to remind myself of the name) but somehow it got changed the tag to you @LadyPrigsbottom! How odd. Is it some strange new feature that I hit by accident?

I've just had my sweet treat of the day - a home made rice krispie cake!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 11/07/2020 20:58

Firstly, @RubySlippers77 I'm sorry he treated you like that. As you said it sounds like he was trying to pull you down.

I've had a good day - a hike, a (veggie) sausage sandwich, doughnut and a coffee post hike, and vegetable fajitas for dinner. This is the sort of way I would like to eat - pretty healthy, wee treat at the weekend. No drama or overthinking or self-flagelation.

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/07/2020 21:14

I feel the same @TheDaydreamBelievers! This is how I want to eat. I feel like a proper grown up. All the bonkers dieting and then stuffing my face on the sly makes me feel like a total twat, not a proper adult!

Weird re the tagging @Chicchicchicchiclana! I have actually noticed that tagging has been a bit trickier lately. I noticed that it is coming up with more options when I type the start of someone's name...so I think it is now letting you type any part of the name and then giving you the option iyswim, rather than just the beginning of the name? Or has that always been the way?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/07/2020 21:16

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good day and that my fellow "No S" dieters enjoyed their Sunday Grin.

I'd just like it noted for the record that I left a whole roast potato on my plate tonight! It was a lovely, big perfectly cooked one too.

.

Am now lying in bed, ever so slightly hungry. Must learn to embrace this feeling!

WhistlersandJugglers · 12/07/2020 21:30

My only snack today was rice cakes and jam. Last night was a bit of a blow out though with crisps and peanuts. I spent a lot of time over the weekend tidying up the garden so hoping that counts as exercise-I'm very tired from all the fresh air.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 12/07/2020 22:18

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Today I've had a veggie cooked breakfast, latte, pizza for dinner, and a couple of squashies sweets. Now to try see how weekdays go!

I'm very aware of using food as an emotional regulation tool at times so I will need to watch out for those times when I want to snack and try other things to meet my emotional needs!

RubySlippers77 · 12/07/2020 22:38

@Chicchicchicchiclana I am in awe of your roast potato refusal Grin

I still haven't read the No S Diet - just too much £££ on Kindle, and my library still isn't open - no idea when it will re-open either, all loans have been extended till September Sad I'm going to have another look at my (low fat) cookbooks though for some fresh ideas.

Thank you for your good wishes @LadyPrigsbottom and @TheDaydreamBelievers; DP has been slightly more bearable since then, I think the alcohol does make him particularly unpleasant. Yes, I know I need to lose weight but TBH he's no help even if I confide in him, he doesn't like shopping/ cooking/ meal planning so it all falls to me anyway. I'm hoping that I drop some pounds fairly quickly to give me some motivation to carry on!

And I completely empathise with using food for emotional purposes, oh gosh, I'm tired/ sad/ happy so I want a bit of cake/ some crisps/lovely buttery toast... everything is/ was about trying to smother my feelings. I know it's boring but for me it helps to eat a more restrictive diet and just tell myself that I don't eat x, y or z any more. Some people can have a tiny bit of things and be satisfied - not me!

LadyPrigsbottom · 13/07/2020 09:39

Hi all!

Also in awe of your amazing restraint with the roastie @Chicchicchicchiclana Halo!

I also emotionally eat. I think I stress eat or boredom eat especially. The past couple of weeks have been the only weeks in quite some time when I haven't attacked the fridge at 4 o'clock! Always around that time for some reason...

Anyway, I had a good weekend. The only treat I had was one oreo with a Brew, for 'pudding' yesterday. Other than that, I'm not sure I even snacked this weekend... I did have seconds last night as we had a bbq. I don't think I was a total binge monster about it though...

Started today with a bowl of porridge with dates, almonds and grated apple. The toddler loved it and it was tasty and filling.

Planning sweet and sour tofu for dinner, but no idea about lunch. DC2 and I are going for a walk soon. I might do a hands free yoga session later too, if DC2 decides to nap.

@RubySlippers77 glad he is a bit more bearable. That sort of comment is so unhelpful, especially coming from someone who also has a weight problem and doesn't help with meals!

OP posts:
RubySlippers77 · 13/07/2020 10:38

Oooh I love porridge @LadyPrigsbottom Grin I made pancakes with porridge oats today - they're no Points on WW so I often have them for breakfast! OTOH I have no idea how to cook tofu, it always turns into a crumbly mess when I try...

And yes, his comments really are unhelpful, although I'm glad I'm in this for the long haul as I lost a measly half a pound this week Sad plus a tiny bit of body fat, but I was hoping for more. Might be because I didn't eat till very late last night - 9.30pm - as DS2 just WOULD NOT go to sleep Angry

LadyPrigsbottom · 13/07/2020 12:27

@RubySlippers77 my best tip with tofu, which made me love it is to press it, toss it in cornflour and flavourings and then fry it in a good splash of oil. I'm not sure how WW friendly that would be with the oil, but it is lovely!

Ugh yes with the dcs not going to sleep till soooooo late at the moment. Roll on the slightly shorter days please! In betweeny seasons are my favourite.

OP posts:
RubySlippers77 · 13/07/2020 23:11

Thanks @LadyPrigsbottom, I might give it a go. I've bought the ready cooked tofu before which is delicious, but £££ if not on offer and not particularly WW friendly either Sad

Happily DS2 went straight to sleep this evening... not so happily DP was winding up DS1 rather than just getting him to bed, so that was an extra hour wasted Angry

I'm trying to think of ways to keep active/ motivated over the summer holidays - will have to have a look for any good MN threads about it!

LadyPrigsbottom · 14/07/2020 11:21

It definitely works out cheaper than the pre-prepared version @RubySlippers77, unless you're lucky enough to have a good Asian supermarket nearby, (which I sadly do not, since I moved away from the city.

How is everyone today?

I'm ok. Stuck to plan yesterday. So far today I've had 2 x coffees and some toast for breakfast. Not healthy, but still on plan. Think my shorts feel a bit looser than when I last wore them. Doing some sorting out in the house today, which I'm counting as my exercise! I was planning on doing naice hot dogs for dinner, but don't have the naice bread. I refuse to use rubbish bread for them as then they would just be common or garden hot dogs, which clearly are less healthy Wink. So, I'm doing a chicken, sausage and apple traybake thingy for dinner. No idea what to do for lunch. Soup maybe.

Hope everyone is having a nice week so far Smile!

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 14/07/2020 14:36

I'm doing well this week so far, not snacking, eating my meals. Havent been kcal counting though. Oh well. Also keep meaning to weigh myself then forgetting.

So far today a cheese, pickle and cucumber sandwich, apple and banana

Whenever I do I need to be cautious not to go from weigh to sad about weight to eating junk ... I've been stuck in that loop before!

LadyPrigsbottom · 14/07/2020 17:25

Ah yes, I know that loop well @TheDaydreamBelievers! I think weighing too much sends me loopy. I fluctuate throughout the day / week / month. I know this and yet I cannot seem to get it into my head! So, in my head, a loss is a real loss, even if I cannot POSSIBLY have lost 4 lbs of fat overnight or whatever, or I fall into a shame spiral when I know really I cannot POSSIBLY have gained 4 lbs of fat overnight! So, for me, it's better to keep weigh ins as infrequent as possible, so I can see what the general trend is over a longer time period.

I'm probably going to weigh again next week. Fingers crossed I might have lost something by then.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/07/2020 21:02

Hello fellow slow losers. Today I've had a banana, a 2 egg omelette with a bit of grated cheddar and 1 large slice of sourdough toast, and a large bowl of home made minestrone with loads of veg and pasta in it and tons of parmesan on top. But crucially I didn't go back for seconds.

Also I was quite hungry around 10am (when I caved and had the banana - I don't usually eat breakfast) and 7pm just before dinner was ready.

But I've had no snacks, sugar or seconds so all is well.

@RubySlippers77 - I don't think you need to buy the No S Diet book, I haven't. As I understand it the beauty of it is just wrapped up in "No snacks, no sugar, no seconds ... except on S days (Saturday and Sunday) and special days like celebrations." That is literally it. There's a website with testimonials and pictures and everything - quite interesting. It's been around for more than 10 years I think.

LadyPrigsbottom · 14/07/2020 21:40

Hey @Chicchicchicchiclana! Sounds like you had a good day.

I stuck to the plan too, although my meal choices could have been a little healthier. That isn't code for, "I had McDonalds breakfast, KFC for lunch and Dominos for dinner" Wink. Just, could've been healthier, but nothing terrible.

Might have a Gin with my Star Wars this evening! DH and I are watching all of them from the beginning! On ep 6 now.

Will try and plan some more healthier meals for the rest of the week. Dinner is usually fine, but lunches and breakfasts I never known what to have so end up with lots of bready meals! Toast and sandwiches.

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 14/07/2020 22:15

I'm really sticking to the 16:8 this week. I had salmon for dinner and I'm a little peckish now but just going to have a cup of tea on it's own. This is boring so it better be effective.

RubySlippers77 · 15/07/2020 23:24

Well done to everyone for sticking at their plans! I'm slightly over my WW points for today and I haven't even eaten anything exciting Confused just bits here and there, a couple of quorn burgers at lunch was the highlight really.

@LadyPrigsbottom I often end up making banana pancakes for breakfast - can top them with fruit and yogurt which makes a pretty decent meal.

I've tried 16:8 @WhistlersandJugglers but I just found it too hard - the DC are usually up around 6am and I'm hungry by 8. 4pm is just too early to finish eating for the day when I'm often up till 10pm tidying/ cleaning/ sorting stuff out!
